DFI’s ‘Watching the Classics’ set on May 26

Doha: The Doha Film Institute (DFI) announced that its “Watching the Classics” session three with Professor Richard Peña will be on May 26.

This is an online programme where filmmakers and cinephiles can deepen their knowledge of film history. Presented by renowned scholar Richard Peña—Professor of Film Studies at Columbia University and Director Emeritus of the New York Film Festival, the series of lectures/discussions each focuses on an undisputed world cinema classic.

For the third session, the movie The Crime of Monsieur Lange,  a 1936 French film by Jean Renoir will be the topic. The timings will be from 5.40pm to 7.30pm. Unlike Hollywood, France never developed large companies that dominated the film industry; instead, there were literally hundreds of small producers, which allowed filmmakers to experiment with form and subject. 

Son of the famous Impressionist painter, Jean Renoir had a period of almost unmatched creativity in the 30s, developing a style that depended on large group compositions and camera movement. After a string of successes, Renoir was approached by a radical theatre group to adapt their play, In the Courtyard, to the screen; collaborating with poet Jacques Prévert, Renoir greatly expanded the original, chronicling the formation of a workers’ cooperative by a publishing house and a laundry.

But when a threat to end the cooperative appears, a decision to defend it must be made. Filmed just as the left-wing Popular Front was coming to power, the film is a celebration of the power of ordinary citizens to determine their own fate. In the expanded “Watching the Classics,” participants will have the chance to explore a wide-range series of international cinematic landmarks, exploring this idea of the “classical narrative” in several contexts. 

Topics to be explored each week include: the transition to sound cinema, the increasing role of governments in film production, the impact of World War II, and the impact of notions of “realism” and “modernism” on filmmakers and audiences.  The fee for this online session is QR70, if you have Qatar Museum Culture Pass, fee will be QR56. 

The programme is open to applicants over the age of 18. The sessions are best suited for those with some knowledge of filmmaking and who wish to expand their understanding of film history, DFI said. To register, visit the DFI website.

حيث تركز هذه السلسلة من المحاضرات، على فيلم عالمي حجز موقعه ضمن كلاسيكيات السينما. وفي الجلسة، يقوم ريتشارد بنيا باستعراض: الجمالي، الاقتصادي، التكنولوجي، والاجتماعي/‏‏‏السياسي للفيلم، مع التوضيح بالتفصيل التقنيات الرسمية للمخرج، مع مناقشة أثرها على القرارات الفنية والتقنية.

لتحقيق أقصى استفادة من البرنامج، قبل كل جلسة، دعت مؤسسة الدوحة للأفلام المشاركين بمشاهدة الأفلام المتاحة بسهولة من خلال منصات البث المتنوعة. بعد التسجيل، يمكن للمشاركين من داخل قطر طلب موعد لمشاهدة الفيلم الذي ستركز عليه المحاضرة في مقر مؤسسة الدوحة للأفلام من خلال مراسلة training@dohafilminstitute.com وخلال المحاضرة، سيتم تضمين صور ومقاطع محددة للمناقشة، وسيتمكن المشاركون من إرسال أسئلتهم للبروفيسور بنيا، على أن يتم تناولها في نهاية كل جلسة.
