Researchers Use Internet to Identify Signs of Depression in Young People

Oslo: Researchers from SINTEF in Norway, and the University of Oslo (UiO), confirmed that people who suffer from depression can be identified by looking through their choices of words, phrases and content in different linguistic contexts on social media.
The researchers have been working on a research project called ‘Social Health Bots,’ which is aimed at identifying new, digital solutions to help young people with their mental health issues.
This project aims to identify symptoms of depression by analyzing the content posted by young people on websites.
The researchers have succeeded in identifying signs of depression by using algorithms related to artificial intelligence by examining the posts written by young people on a website called Ung.no.
For his part, Medical Doctor at UiO, Kim Kristoffer Dysthe, who is specialized in mental health issues of young people, stressed that words and sentences used by young people to describe what they are struggling with agree amazingly well with the symptoms set out in the DSM-5 diagnosis manual used in the treatment of, and research into, mental illnesses.
Specializing in medical sciences, the Medical Xpress website reported that a researcher from SINTEF stated that using algorithms to detect depression opens the door to helping young people who need urgent intervention.

ويهدف هذا المشروع إلى اكتشاف أعراض الاكتئاب من خلال تحليل التدوينات التي يكتبها الشباب وصغار السن على مواقع الانترنت.
ونجح الباحثون بالفعل في تحديد مؤشرات على الاكتئاب من خلال معادلات خوارزمية ترتبط بتقنيات الذكاء الاصطناعي من خلال فحص تدوينات الشباب على موقع يحمل اسم /يونج دوت نو/.
ومن جهته أكد الباحث كيم كريستوفر ديسته الطبيب في جامعة /أوسلو/ المتخصص في مشكلات الصحة النفسية للشباب أن المفردات والعبارات التي يستخدمها الشباب من مرضى الاكتئاب تتوافق بشكل مثير للدهشة مع أعراض الاكتئاب المسجلة في الدوريات والكتب العلمية المتخصصة.
ونقل الموقع الإلكتروني /ميديكال إكسبريس/ المتخصص في العلوم الطبية عن الباحث بيتر باي براندزاج المتخصص في علم النفس في معهد /سينتيف/ قوله إن “استخدام المعادلات الخوارزمية لرصد مرض الاكتئاب يفتح الباب على مصراعيه أمام مساعدة الشباب الذين يحتاجون تدخلا سريعا “.
