Woman carried coronavirus for 216 days

In a rare and strange case, a recent study showed that a 36-year-old South African woman with HIV had been infected with COVID-19 for 216 days and the virus had mutated within her body at least 30 times.

The report on the condition was published as a preliminary publication on medRxiv last Thursday, where tests showed that the HIV-infected woman’s body had seen more than 30 mutations during her time with Covid-19 since September last year, including 13 mutations in the Spike Protein known to help the virus escape the immune response, and 19 other mutations that could change the behavior of the virus, RT reported.

The Los Angeles Times reported that it was not clear whether the South African woman’s surges had moved on to others.

“This case is worrying if more are found, as it raises the possibility that HIV infection may be a source of new variables simply because patients can carry the virus longer,” Tulio de Oliveira, a geneticist at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban, told the newspaper.

Dr. Juan Ambrosini, a professor of infectious diseases at the University of Barcelona, told Insider that the results are important for controlling COVID-19 because these patients can be a constant source of transmission and development of the virus.

وذكرت صحيفة “لوس أنجلوس تايمز” أنه ليس من الواضح ما إذا كانت الطفرات التي حملتها السيدة الجنوب إفريقية قد انتقلت إلى آخرين.

وقال توليو دي أوليفيرا، عالم الوراثة في جامعة كوازولو ناتال في ديربان للصحيفة، إن “هذه الحالة مثيرة للقلق إذا تم العثور على المزيد منها، حيث أنها تثير احتمال أن تكون الإصابة بفيروس نقص المناعة مصدرا لمتغيرات جديدة لمجرد أن المرضى يمكن أن يحملوا الفيروس لفترة أطول”.

وقال الدكتور خوان أمبروسيني، الأستاذ في الأمراض المعدية بجامعة برشلونة، لـ Insider إنّه إن النتائج مهمة للسيطرة على COVID-19 لأن هؤلاء المرضى يمكن أن يكونوا مصدرا مستمرا لانتقال الفيروس وتطوره.
