QatarEnergy Launches Updated Sustainability Strategy

Doha: QatarEnergy launched its updated Sustainability Strategy reemphasizing its commitment, as a major energy producer, to the responsible production of clean and affordable energy to facilitate the energy transition.

Building on the achievements of its 2019 Sustainability Strategy’, in a statement published on Monday QatarEnergy will maintain focus on three priority areas: climate change and environmental action, responsible operations, and social and economic development. In addition, and in line with global momentum for climate action, numerous targets have been revised to step-up ambitions.

QatarEnergy’s updated Sustainability Strategy outlines multiple initiatives to reduce Greenhouse Gases emissions, including flagship projects such as the further deployment of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology to capture over 11 million tons per annum of CO2 in Qatar by 2035.

These projects will further reduce the carbon intensity of Qatar’s LNG facilities by 35 percent, and of its upstream facilities by at least 25 percent (compared to previous targets of 25 percent and 15 percent, respectively) bolstering Qatar’s commitment to responsibly supply cleaner LNG at scale in support of the energy transition.

Furthermore, QatarEnergy will continue pursuing efforts to advance the midterm targets of increasing solar capacity to over 5 GW and eliminating routine flaring and limiting fugitive methane emissions along the gas value chain.

Commenting on the updated strategy, HE the Minister of State for Energy Affairs, the President and CEO of QatarEnergy Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi, said, “In QatarEnergy, we believe we have a significant role to play to mitigate climate change. This will be achieved by implementing our Sustainability Strategy, through applying effective measures to curb emissions, producing cleaner LNG using the latest proven emissions reduction technologies, expanding renewables capacity, and compensating for residual emissions through CCS and Nature-Based Solutions, where appropriate.”

“As the world’s largest LNG-producing company, in a solar-resource-rich region, our Sustainability Strategy builds on these strengths and illustrates our efforts in exploring, with our global partners, a variety of relevant low-carbon energy solutions, including hydrogen, both in Qatar and internationally, to learn, replicate and scale-up promising solutions” His Excellency Minister Al-Kaabi added.

QatarEnergy has recently signed separate agreements with Shell and Korea’s Hydrogen Convergence Alliance (H2Korea) for cooperation in the field of hydrogen energy both in Qatar and internationally. These efforts will focus on sectors such as industry and transportation, where hydrogen could offer a credible and material decarbonization route.

In addition, QatarEnergy is placing significant focus on improving its environmental footprint and enhancing the resilience of biodiversity in Qatar through adding Nature-Based Solutions that would eliminate CO2 emissions and enhance local habitats to improve the quality of life.

Through its updated Sustainability Strategy, QatarEnergy’s reaffirms its commitment to the protection of the environment, while establishing harmony between economic, social, and environmental objectives in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030. The Sustainability Strategy also reaffirms QatarEnergy’s commitment to meeting the social challenges in an increasingly competitive and complex energy landscape while achieving a world-class safety culture that ensures a secure, safe, and healthy environment for all people and communities in which QatarEnergy operates.

الدوحة: أطلقت قطر للطاقة استراتيجيتها المحدّثة للاستدامة التي تعيد التأكيد على التزامها، كمنتج رئيسي للطاقة، بالإنتاج المسؤول للطاقة النظيفة ذات أسعار معقولة لتسهيل الانتقال إلى طاقة منخفضة الكربون.

وقال بيان صادر عن الشركة، إن قطر للطاقة ستواصل التركيز على ثلاثة مجالات ذات أولوية لتحقيق رؤيتها وهي تغير المناخ والعمل البيئي، والعمليات المسؤولة، والتنمية الاجتماعية والاقتصادية، وذلك بناءً على إنجازات “استراتيجية الاستدامة لعام 2019″، مشيرة إلى مراجعة عدد من الأهداف لرفع الطموحات التي تتماشى مع استراتيجية الاستدامة ومع الزخم العالمي المتزايد للعمل المناخي.

ويحدد التقرير المحدّث مبادرات متعددة لخفض انبعاثات غازات الاحتباس الحراري مثل تقنية احتجاز الكربون وتخزينه (CCS) لالتقاط أكثر من 11 مليون طن سنويا من ثاني أكسيد الكربون في دولة قطر بحلول عام 2035.

وستسمح المبادرات التي تم وضعها بخفض المزيد من كميات الكربون في منشآت الغاز الطبيعي المسال في قطر وبنسبة 35، وفي منشآت التنقيب والإنتاج بنسبة 25 على الأقل (مقارنة بالأهداف السابقة المحددة بنسبة 25% و15% على التوالي، وهو ما يعزز التزام قطر بتزويد غاز طبيعي أنظف بمسؤولية وعلى نطاق واسع لتسهيل الانتقال إلى طاقة منخفضة الكربون.

كما ستواصل قطر للطاقة متابعة جهودها لتحقيق أهداف توليد أكثر من 5 غيغاواطات من الطاقة الشمسية، ووقف الحرق الروتيني للغاز والحد من انبعاثات غاز الميثان المتسربة على طول سلسلة صناعة الغاز.

وقال سعادة المهندس سعد بن شريدة الكعبي، وزير الدولة لشؤون الطاقة، العضو المنتدب والرئيس التنفيذي لقطر للطاقة، أن لدى قطر للطاقة دورا مهما في التخفيف من آثار تغير المناخ. وسيتم تحقيق ذلك من خلال تنفيذ استراتيجية للاستدامة وتطبيق تدابير فعّالة للحد من الانبعاثات، وإنتاج غاز طبيعي مسال أنظف باستخدام أحدث التقنيات المثبتة للحد من الانبعاثات، وتوسيع استخدام الطاقة المتجددة، والتعويض عن الانبعاثات المتبقية عند الضرورة ومن خلال التقاط الكربون وتخزينه والحلول المبنية على الطبيعة حيث يمكن.”

وأضاف أن قطر بصفتها أكبر دولة منتجة للغاز في منطقة غنية بمصادر الطاقة الشمسية، توضح الاستراتيجية المحدّثة للاستدامة الجهود التي تبذل مع الشركاء العالميين في استكشاف مجموعة متنوعة من الفرص ومن نماذج مشاريع الهيدروجين في قطر وحول العالم للوصول إلى حلول واعدة يمكن تسخيرها وتوسيعها.

وأشار البيان إلى أنه تم التوقيع مؤخرا على اتفاقيات بين قطر للطاقة وتحالف التقاء الهيدروجين H2Korea في جمهورية كوريا، ومع شركة شل للتعاون في مجال طاقة الهيدروجين في قطر وعلى المستوى الدولي. وستركز هذه الجهود على قطاعات مثل الصناعة والنقل، حيث يمكن للهيدروجين أن يساعد بخفض نسب الكربون.

وتولي قطر للطاقة اهتماما كبيرا لتحسين بصمتها البيئية وتعزيز مرونة التنوع البيولوجي في دولة قطر من خلال إضافة حلول مبنيّة على الطبيعة من شأنها القضاء على انبعاثات ثاني أكسيد الكربون وتعزيز البيئة المحلية لتحسين نوعية الحياة.

وتدعم الاستراتيجية المحدّثة التزام قطر للطاقة بحماية البيئة وتعزيزها وبتحقيق التوازن بين الجوانب الاقتصادية والاجتماعية والبيئية بما يتماشى مع رؤية قطر الوطنية 2030. كما تؤكد الاستراتيجية التزام قطر للطاقة بمواجهة التحديات الاجتماعية في بيئة طاقة تنافسية ومعقدة، بينما تعمل في نفس الوقت على تحقيق ثقافة سلامة عالمية المستوى تضمن بيئة آمنة وصحية لجميع الأشخاص وللمجتمعات التي تعمل قطر للطاقة فيها.
