Why Donetsk and Luhansk Matter in Ukraine?

Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin announced today the start of a military operation in Ukraine, two days after Moscow officially recognized Donetsk and Luhansk as “independent republics” from Ukraine.

One of the most important cities in the region is the city of Donetsk: it is the main city in the region, and is its administrative capital. The city is located in the heart of the Donetsk region, and is considered the fifth largest city in Ukraine, with an area of ​​about 358 square kilometers, and more than 900,000 people live in it.

Luhansk province, located in the far east of Ukraine and bordered by Russia to the east, north and south, covers an area of about 26.6 thousand square kilometers, equivalent to about 4.4% of Ukraine’s total area, divided into 18 administrative regions, comprising 37 cities and 109 towns.

With a total population of about 2.2 million according to the 2014 census, Ukrainians make up about 57.9%, Russians 39%, and the rest are divided among other nationalities, such as Belarus, Tatars, Armenians, Azerbaijanis and Moldovans. Russian is the main language in use in the region, and Ukrainian language use is widespread in towns and villages far from major cities. Luhansk is the main city in the region, located in the southeast of the Luhansk region, Luhansk is one of Ukraine’s largest cities, with an area of about 286 square kilometres.

ورغم مساحاته الزراعية الواسعة، تعتبر دونيتسك منطقة صناعية، إذ تشتهر بكثرة مناجم الفحم الحجري ومعامل الحديد والصلب التي يعمل فيها معظم السكان، حيث فيها 13 منجما كبيرا للفحم، وعشرات المناجم الصغيرة، وفيها 9 مصانع لإنتاج فحم الكوك، و10 مصانع لإنتاج القضبان وغيرها من منتجات الصناعات الحديدية.

ومن أهم المدن في المنطقة مدينة دونيتسك: هي المدينة الرئيسية في المنطقة، وتعد عاصمتها الإدارية، تقع المدينة في قلب إقليم دونيتسك، وتعتبر خامس أكبر مدينة في أوكرانيا، إذ تبلغ مساحتها نحو 358 كيلومترا مربعا، ويعيش فيها أكثر من 900 ألف نسمة.

أما إقليم لوغانسك، فيقع في أقصى شرق أوكرانيا، وتحده روسيا من الشرق والشمال والجنوب، تبلغ مساحته نحو 26.6 ألف كيلومتر مربع، أي ما يعادل نحو 4.4% من إجمالي مساحة أوكرانيا، وهي مقسمة إلى 18 منطقة إدارية، وتضم 37 مدينة و109 بلدات.

وتعد مدينة لوغانسك هي المدينة الرئيسية في المنطقة، تقع المدينة في جنوب شرق منطقة لوغانسك، تعتبر لوغانسك من أكبر مدن أوكرانيا، إذ تبلغ مساحتها نحو 286 كيلومترا مربعا.
