Restaurants offers for the national sports day: “buy a sandwich, get one for free”

Doha: On the second Tuesday of February each year, The People of Qatar are on a date with the National Sports Day, an unprecedented initiative unique to Qatar, making it an official holiday through which the state seeks to push all segments of Qatari society of all ages to participate in sports activities and make it a lifestyle to be practiced throughout the year.

Everyone got used to seeing people going outdoors of all ages on that day, men and women, exercising in the open air, not bothering to do anything but breathe more fresh air and enjoy the perfect atmosphere known to Qatar at that time of year, but as soon as a jogger finishes his run and checks his phone, he finds a flood of messages and sponsored promotions from several restaurants. The content of these messages does not go beyond phrases such as “in celebration of the National Sports Day, discount ….%”, “Celebrate the National Sports Day with us and get 1 + 1 free”, “Free drink when you buy such and such on the occasion of the National Sports Day”, which keeps one wondering, trying to find any possible connection between restaurant offers, which means more food consumption, and the National Sports Day during which one does extra activity.

This paradox caught the attention of many tweeters and activists on social media, which prompted them to express their opinions in it with a lot of irony, as one tweeter posted a restaurant ad with the caption: “Believe it or not; restaurants make offers on the occasion of the National Sports Day”.

The artist and cartoonist, Mohamed Abdel Latif, expressed his view of this phenomenon using his brush, and drew this caricature for Al-Sharq newspaper.

“We are trapped,” said one tweeter, mocking a message he received with an offer from one of the restaurants serving “burgers” and said: “I got an SMS from a famous burger restaurant on the occasion of the National Sports Day “buy one burger and get one for free”, how can we live in a sports atmosphere while we are trapped by tasty fast food everywhere?

Another said: “Most restaurants are completely booked for breakfast and lunch”, and one of the tweeters demanded that these offers be limited to gyms and sports equipment shops as the offer of those stores on that day is more fitting than the restaurant offers.

Another tweeter described the presentation of restaurants on the occasion of the National Sports Day as “a paradox”, saying: “they’re contradicting themselves, they should be on the same page as the state and society and should encourage people to do more sport, if they want to help they could have possibly offered healthier foods, dietary food, salads, healthy drinks.”

في الثلاثاء الثاني من شهر فبراير كل عام، أهل قطر على موعد مع اليوم الرياضي للدولة، بادرة غير مسبوقة تنفرد بها قطر فجعلته عطلة رسمية تسعى من خلالها الدولة لدفع جميع فئات المجتمع القطري بمختلف أعمارهم للمشاركة في الأنشطة الرياضية وجعلها أسلوب حياة تتم مزاولته طوال العام.

مشهد صار اعتياديًا في ذلك اليوم، يخرج الناس رجالًا ونساء، كبار وصغار، يمارسون الرياضة في الهواء الطلق، لا يعبؤون بشيء سوى استنشاق المزيد من الهواء النقي والاستمتاع بجو مثالي تعرفه قطر جيدًا في ذلك الوقت من العام، لكن ما إن يفرغ المتريض من عدوه حتى يتفحص هاتفه ليجد سيلًا من الرسائل والإشعارات الدعائية من مطاعم عدة.

رسائل محتواها لا يخرج عن هاته العبارات “احتفالًا باليوم الرياضي للدولة، خصم ….%”، “احتفل معنا باليوم الرياضي للدولة واحصل على 1+1 مجانًا”، “مشروب مجاني عند شرائك كذا وكذا بمناسبة اليوم الرياضي للدولة”، تترك تلك الرسائل قارئها مستغرق الفكر، محاولًا إيجاد أية علاقة ممكنة بين عروض المطاعم والتي تعني مزيدًا من استهلاك الغذاء، واليوم الرياضي الذي يبذل خلاله الإنسان نشاطًا إضافيا.

تلك المفارقة لفتت نظر العديد من المغردين والناشطين عبر مواقع التواصل الاجتماعي ما دفعهم للتعبير عن رأيهم فيها بكثير من السخرية، فأحد المغردين نشر إعلانًا لمطعم وكتب معلقًا عليه: “صدق او لا تصدق المطاعم يسوون عروض بمناسبة اليوم الرياضي”.

الفنان ورسام الكاريكاتير محمد عبداللطيف عبر عن رؤيته لهذه الظاهرة مستخدمًا ريشته، ورسم ذلك الكاريكاتير لحساب صحيفة الشرق.

“نحن محاصرون” قالها أحد المغردين وهو يسخر من رسالة وصلته بعرض من أحد المطاعم التي تقدم “البرغر” وقال: “جاني مسج SMS من مطعم برغر شهير بمناسبة اليوم الرياضي للدولة اشتر ساندويش وأكسب ساندويش آخر بلاش، وين نعيش في أجواء رياضية واحنا محاصرين من كل مكان بما لذ وطاب ودهون”.

وقال آخر: “اغلب المطاعم محجوزة فطور وغداء”، وطالب أحد المغردين بقصر تلك العروض على النوادي ومحال الأدوات الرياضية على اعتبار أن تقديم تلك المحال للعروض في ذلك اليوم أكثر اتساقًا من عروض المطاعم.

ووصفت مغردة تقديم المطاعم للعروض بمناسبة اليوم الرياضي بـ”قمة التناقض” وقالت: “قمة التناقض المفروض إيدهم في ايد الدولة والمجتمع ويشجعون الناس على الرياضة إذا تبغي تساعد ممكن أكلات صحية، رجيم، سلطات، عصاير صحية وفقط”.
