Qatar Airways Signs Deal with Boeing to Buy Up to 50 777-8 Freighters

Washington: Qatar Airways has signed a deal with Boeing to purchase up to 50 777-8 Freighters, as the airplane maker marked the official launch of the new air cargo plane.

Qatar Airways said in a statement that it will be the 777-8 Freighter launch customer with a firm order for 34 jets and options for 16 more, a total purchase that would be worth more than $20 billion at current list prices and the largest freighter commitment in Boeing history by value.

The deal was signed at a White House ceremony on Monday by HE Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Akbar Al Baker, and Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Stan Deal, in the presence of a number of officials from the two countries.

Qatar Airways noted in the statement that the order also supports hundreds of US suppliers from across 38 states, will sustain more than 35,000 US jobs, and provide the American economy with an annual estimated economic impact of $2.6 billion during the contracts delivery period.

Featuring advanced technology from the new 777X family and the proven performance of the market-leading 777 Freighter, the 777-8 Freighter will be the largest, longest-range and most capable twin-engine freighter in the industry. With payload capacity nearly identical to the 747-400 Freighter and a 25% improvement in fuel efficiency, emissions and operating costs, the 777-8 Freighter will enable a more sustainable and profitable business for operators.

HE Al Baker reaffirmed the airlines commitment to the 777X family with the record-breaking 777-8 Freighter deal. First delivery of the new freighter is anticipated in 2027.

“Boeing has a long history of building market-leading freighter aircraft and Qatar Airways is honored to have the opportunity to be the launch customer for the 777-8 Freighter, an aircraft which will not only allow us to further enhance our product offering for our customers, but also help us meet our objectives to deliver a sustainable future for our business,” HE Al Baker said.

For his part, Stan Deal said: “We are delighted to launch Boeings next great cargo airplane the 777-8 Freighter with Qatar Airways, one of the worlds largest cargo carriers and our partner since the airline began operations nearly 30 years ago.”

“Our team is ready to create an airplane that will serve them well for many decades. Qatar Airways selection of the efficient 777-8 Freighter is a testament to our commitment to provide freighters with market-leading capacity, reliability and efficiency,” he added.

Boeing is designing the 777-8 Freighter, the newest member of the 777X family, to maximize efficiency and environmental performance.

As part of todays agreement, Qatar Airways will convert 20 of its 60 777X family orders to the 777-8 Freighter. Qatar Airways is also ordering two current 777 Freighters Boeings best-selling freighter of all time to capitalize on the buoyant air cargo market. Customers from around the world have ordered more than 300 777 Freighters since the program began in 2005.

Qatar Airways and Boeing also signed a Memorandum of Understanding for a firm order of 25 737-10 aircraft and purchase rights for 25 additional airplanes. The total value of this 737-10 commitment is nearly $7 billion at current list prices.

The largest model in the MAX family, the 737-10 seats up to 230 passengers in a single-class configuration and can fly up to 3,300 miles. The fuel-efficient jet can cover 99% of single-aisle routes around the world.

Commenting on the MoU, HE Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Akbar Al Baker said: “Qatar Airways very much looks forward to adding the 737-10 to its fleet, with this new variant of the 737 being ideally suited to our short haul network, allowing us an opportunity to further enhance our product offering for our customers, modernize our fleet and operate the most efficient aircraft in its category.”

“The largest member of the 737 family, the 737-10 is an airplane that offers more capacity, greater fuel efficiency and the best per-seat economics of any single-aisle airplane,” said Deal. “We are proud of our partnership with Qatar Airways and honored that this world class airline continues to put its trust in our Boeing team.”

In a related context, Qatar Airways announced a new order for GE9X engines as part of its global launch order of up to 50 Boeing 777-8 Freighters. The commitment, which includes 34 firm 777-8 orders and an additional 16 purchase right options, also includes GE90 engines for an additional order of two Boeing 777 Freighters.

Qatar Airways said that the total value of the order with GE is more than $6.8 billion list price, including spare engines, a new order for GE90-115B engines, and a TrueChoice services agreement to cover the maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) of the engines.

HE Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Akbar Al Baker, said: “With our status as the worlds largest air freight carrier, Qatar Airways has ambitious plans for the future of its cargo operations. As operators of the Boeing 777 family, including the global launch customer of Boeings 777-8 Freighter aircraft, we are delighted to have GE as our partners and these contracts for GE engines further cement the strong relationship between Qatar Airways and GE.”

“We are confident that Qatar Airways focus to drive towards a sustainable future will be very much supported by the efficiency of the GE9X engines,” HE Al Baker added.

For his part, GE Aviation CEO John Slattery said: “GE Aviation has great history and proven track record of powering freighter-dedicated aircraft. We are proud to continue building our relationship with Qatar Airways and play a significant role in their growth with this order of Boeing 777-8 Freighter and 777 Freighter aircraft.”

وقالت الخطوط الجوية القطرية في بيان، إنها ستصبح المشغل العالمي الأول لطائرة الشحن الجوي 777-8 مع طلب مؤكد لشراء 34 طائرة وطلب اختياري لشراء 16 طائرة أخرى، بقيمة إجمالية تصل إلى أكثر من 20 مليار دولار أمريكي لتصبح الأعلى قيمةً في تاريخ شركة بوينغ.

وقّع الاتفاقية سعادة السيد أكبر الباكر الرئيس التنفيذي لمجموعة الخطوط الجوية القطرية، والسيد ستانلي ديل الرئيس والرئيس التنفيذي للطائرات التجارية في بوينغ، بحضور عدد من المسؤولين في البلدين.

وأشارت /القطرية/ إلى أن هذه الاتفاقية التي جرت مراسمها في البيت الأبيض، ستسهم في دعم المئات من الموردين الأمريكيين من أكثر من 38 ولاية أمريكية وتوفير أكثر من 35 ألف وظيفة في الولايات المتحدة، وستضخ 2.6 مليار دولار أمريكي سنوياً في الاقتصاد الأمريكي طوال فترة تسليم الطائرات.

وبحسب البيان، تجمع الطائرة الجديدة بين المزايا التكنولوجية الحديثة لطائرة 777X والأداء المذهل لطائرات الشحن من طراز 777، لتصبح بذلك طائرة 777-8 طائرة الشحن ذات المحركين الأكبر حجماً وذات المدى الأطول والأكثر اعتمادية في العالم.

وتعدّ سعة الشحن في هذه الطائرة مماثلة تقريباً لطائرة 747-400، إلا أنها أفضل بنسبة 25 في المئة من حيث التوفير في استهلاك الوقود والانبعاثات والكلفة التشغيلية، مما سيقدم لشركات الطيران أعمالاً أكثر استدامة وربحية.

وجدد الرئيس التنفيذي لمجموعة الخطوط الجوية القطرية التأكيد على التزام الناقلة تجاه عائلة طائرات 777X مع تسجيل طلب لشراء طائرات الشحن الجوي 777-8، والتي من المتوقع استلام الطائرة الأولى ضمن هذه الاتفاقية في عام 2027.

وقال سعادة السيد أكبر الباكر “إن شركة بوينغ تتمتع بتاريخ طويل في صناعة أفضل طائرات الشحن الجوي في العالم، وتفتخر الخطوط الجوية القطرية بأن تكون المشغل العالمي الأول لطائرة الشحن الجديدة من طراز بوينغ 777-8”.

وأضاف “هذه الطائرة ستمكن الناقلة من تعزيز الخدمات التي نقدمها لعملائها، وتلبية الأهداف الموضوعة في تعزيز الاستدامة ضمن مختلف عملياتنا في المستقبل”.

وتابع يقول “هذا اليوم استثنائي في تاريخ علاقاتنا مع بوينغ التي ستبذل قصارى جهدها لتسليم طائرات تلبي توقعاتنا، ونحن كلنا ثقة بأن بوينغ لن تعمل على تحقيق هذا الأمر فحسب، بل ستتخطى أيضاً توقعاتنا بلا شك”.

وأضاف “هذا الأمر ساهم في وجودنا هنا اليوم لنكون المشغل العالمي الأول لواحدة من أفضل طائرات الشحن الجوي لأجيال قادمة”.

من جهته، أعرب السيد ستانلي ديل، عن سروره بإطلاق طائرة الشحن الجوي بوينغ 777-8، “التي ستصبح الخطوط الجوية القطرية، إحدى أكبر ناقلة جوية في العالم وشريك بوينغ منذ 30 عاماً تقريباً، المشغل العالمي الأول لهذه الطائرة الاستثنائية”.

وأكد الجاهزية التامة لفرق العمل في بوينغ لصناعة طائرة ستلبي احتياجات الناقلة لعقود قادمة.. منوها بأن اختيار الخطوط القطرية لطائرات 777-8 يعدّ شاهداً على التزام الشركة في صناعة طائرات ذات سعة كبيرة، واعتمادية عالية، وكفاءة مميزة في استهلاك الوقود”.

واتخذت بوينغ القرار بتصنيع طائرة الشحن 777-8، أحدث أفراد عائلة طائرات 777X، لتحسين كفاءة طائرات الشركة وتعزيز أدائها البيئي.

في سياق متصل، قالت الخطوط القطرية إنها أجرت، ضمن اتفاقية اليوم، تعديلاً على طلب الشراء لـ60 طائرة من عائلة 777X، حيث ستحوّل 20 طائرة ضمن هذه الطلبية لتصبح 777-8. كما ستضيف ثلاث طائرات شحن جوي من طراز 777 في المدى القريب للاستفادة من سوق الشحن الجوي المزدهر حالياً.

وتعتبر طائرة 777 إحدى أكثر طائرات بوينغ للشحن الجوي مبيعاً على الإطلاق، حيث استلمت الشركة طلبات لشراء أكثر من 300 طائرة 777 للشحن منذ إطلاق مبيعات الطائرة في 2005.

كما أبرمت الخطوط الجوية القطرية وبوينغ مذكرة تفاهم لطلب شراء مؤكد لـ25 طائرة من طراز بوينغ 737-10، وطلب حقوق شراء 25 طائرة إضافية، بقيمة إجمالية تصل إلى حوالي 7 مليارات دولار أمريكي. وتعتبر هذه الطائرة الأكبر ضمن عائلة طائرات “ماكس”، حيث تضم 230 مقعداً، ويمكنها الطيران لمسافة 3.300 ميل. كما يمكن لهذه الطائرة التي تتسم بالكفاءة في استهلاك الوقود، التحليق إلى 99 في المئة من الوجهات في العالم التي يُسيّر إليها الطائرات ذات الممر الواحد.

وحول مذكرة التفاهم هذه، قال سعادة السيد أكبر الباكر “إن هذه الفئة من الطائرات تعتبر مثالية لخدمة شبكة وجهاتنا ذات المدى القريب، مما يتيح الفرصة أمامنا لتعزيز خدماتنا للمسافرين، وتحديث أسطولنا، وتشغيل أكثر الطائرات كفاءةً ضمن فئتها”.

ومن جانبه، قال السيد ديل “ان الطائرة بوينغ 737-10، الأكبر ضمن عائلة طائرات 737، تتسم بسعة أكبر وكفاءة في استهلاك الوقود، والأفضل من حيث الكفاءة التشغيلية مقارنة بنظيراتها من الطائرات ذات الممر الواحد”.

في سياق ذي صلة، أعلنت الخطوط القطرية عن طلب 30 محرك GE9X ضمن طلب شراء طائرات الشحن الجوي الجديدة من طراز بوينغ 777-8، وأربعة محركات GE90-115B وخدمات صيانة ضمن طلب إضافي لشراء طائرتي شحن من طراز بوينغ 777.

وأوضحت “القطرية” أن القيمة الإجمالية لطلب الشراء مع جنرال إلكتريك تبلغ أكثر من 6.8 مليار دولار أمريكي.. مشيرة إلى أنه يشتمل على محركات إضافية، واتفاقية خدمات لتغطية الصيانة والإصلاح والتجديد للمحركات.

وفي تعليقه على هذه الطلبية، قال سعادة السيد أكبر الباكر “بفضل مكانتنا الحالية بوصفنا إحدى أكبر شركات الشحن الجوي في العالم، لدينا في الخطوط الجوية القطرية خطط طموحة لمستقبل عمليات الشحن”.

وأضاف “لأننا من ضمن المشغلين العالميين للطائرات من عائلة بوينغ 777 والمشغل العالمي الأول لطائرة الشحن بوينغ 777-8، تسعدنا الشراكة مع جنرال إلكتريك حيث إن هذه الاتفاقيات الجديدة ستعمل على تعزيز العلاقات القوية بين الطرفين”.

وعبر عن ثقته بأن محركات GE9X التي تتسم بالكفاءة، ستكون داعماً كبيراً لتوجه الخطوط الجوية القطرية نحو مستقبل أكثر استدامة.

من جهته، قال السيد جون سلاتري، الرئيس التنفيذي لجنرال إلكتريك “إن جنرال إلكتريك للطيران تتمتع بتاريخ حافل في تشغيل طائرات الشحن الجوي”، معبرا عن الفخر بمواصلة تعزيز علاقاتها مع الخطوط الجوية والمساهمة بدور كبير في نموها من خلال طلبها لشراء طائرات الشحن الجوي من طراز بوينغ 777-8 و777.
