QNL to Launch Arab American Exhibition in December
مكتبة قطر الوطنية تفتتح معرض المهاجرون العرب في الولايات المتحدة في 21 ديسمبر الجاري

Doha: Qatar National Library (QNL), in celebration of the Qatar-USA Year of Culture 2021, will inaugurate the exhibition “Arab Immigrants in the US: Pursuing the American Dream” with a virtual discussion on Dec.22, 2021. The exhibition will be open for public viewing until March,17, 2022.
During the inaugural online session, speakers Dr. Akram Khater, Professor of History in North Carolina State University and Director of the Khayrallah Center of Lebanese Diaspora Studies; Dr. Wail S. Hassan, Director at the Center for South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies and Professor of Comparative Literature and English, University of Illinois; and Laila Lalami, an Arab American novelist, will explore the journey of Arab immigrants who began moving to the US in the early 19th century.
On the occasion, HE Minister of State, Qatar and President of Qatar National Library Dr. Hamad Bin Abdulaziz Al Kawari said, “Arab immigration to America is one of the largest diasporas in history, reflecting the successful integration of the two regions over the years.”
His Excellency added that “This exhibition offers a deeper understanding of the literary work inspired by the movement, its cultural aspects and the role of the Arab press in the US during the 19th century. We believe our community will learn more about the journey some of their ancestors embarked on, their struggle and how they successfully established their presence and identity in American society through hard work and commitment. The legacy of Arab American heritage lives on today through the works of authors available in our Library. We hope the exhibition will inspire members to explore a movement that is an integral part of both Arab and American history.”
For her part, the Head of Collection Access at QNL Maryam Al Mutawa said: “This exhibition celebrates the Qatar-USA Year of Culture and will educate our communities about the socio-economic, political and cultural aspects of the diaspora and Arab American literature. The exhibition highlights how the Arab community was able to adapt to its new society while preserving its culture and literature, and showcases the enriching impact of Arab literature on its American counterpart.”
It will also shed light on the distinct phases of the diaspora from the early 19th century until around 1965, highlighting the evolution of Arab society in the US over the given period, she said, adding that the three waves of the movement primarily included Arabs from Syria and Lebanon. The exhibition also explores the causes of immigration and the conditions of the first migrants during inclusion and adaptation.

الدوحة: تفتتح مكتبة قطر الوطنية يوم 21 ديسمبر الجاري، افتراضيا معرض /المهاجرون العرب في الولايات المتحدة: السعي وراء الحلم الأمريكي/، وذلك في إطار فعاليات الاحتفال بالعام الثقافي /قطر ـ الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية 2021/.. بينما سيكون متاحا للجمهور الزيارة من تاريخ 22 ديسمبر حتى 17 مارس 2022.
بالموازاة مع ذلك، تقيم المكتبة ندوة افتراضية خاصة بعنوان /المهاجرون العرب والحلم الأمريكي/ في اليوم الموالي من افتتاح المعرض، تستضيف خلالها الدكتور أكرم خاطر أستاذ التاريخ بجامعة ولاية /نورث كارولاينا/ ومدير مركز خيرالله لدراسات الانتشار اللبناني، والدكتور وائل حسن أستاذ الأدب المقارن واللغة الإنجليزية في جامعة إلينوي ومدير مركز دراسات جنوب آسيا والشرق الأوسط، والكاتبة ليلى العلمي، وهي روائية أمريكية من أصل عربي.
وسيتناول المتحدثون بالمناقشة والتحليل رحلة المهاجرين العرب الذين شرعوا في الارتحال إلى الولايات المتحدة في مطلع القرن التاسع عشر.
وقال سعادة الدكتور حمد بن عبدالعزيز الكواري وزير الدولة ورئيس مكتبة قطر الوطنية، في تصريح اليوم “تجسد هجرة العرب إلى الولايات المتحدة – وهي واحدة من كبرى حركات الهجرة في التاريخ ـ مدى التكامل الناجح بين الأمتين بمرور السنين”.
وأوضح سعادته أن المعرض يقدم للمتتبع فهما أعمق وأشمل لإرث الأعمال الأدبية المستلهمة من تجربة الهجرة وجوانبها الثقافية ودور الصحافة العربية في الولايات المتحدة خلال القرن التاسع عشر، مؤكدا “لدينا قناعة راسخة بأن مجتمعنا سيعرف المزيد عن الرحلة التي بدأها بعض أسلافهم، وعن صراعهم ونضالهم في الحياة الجديدة، وكيف رسخوا وجودهم وهويتهم في المجتمع الأمريكي بالاجتهاد والالتزام والدأب والإصرار، واليوم ينبض إرث التراث العربي الأمريكي بالحياة في أعمال المؤلفين المتاحة في مكتبتنا. ونأمل أن يلهم المعرض الزائرين وأفراد المجتمع للتعرف على تاريخ هذه الحركة التي تمثل جزءا مهما من التاريخين العربي والأمريكي معا”.
من جانبها، قالت السيدة مريم المطوع رئيس قسم إتاحة المجموعات في مكتبة قطر الوطنية، إن هذا المعرض الذي يحتفي بالعام الثقافي /قطر ـ الولايات المتحدة 2021/، يعرف مجتمعنا بالجوانب الاقتصادية والاجتماعية والسياسية والثقافية للهجرة العربية إلى أمريكا وسمات الأدب العربي الأمريكي، كما يبرز جهود الجالية العربية في التكيف مع المجتمع الجديد مع الحفاظ على ثقافتها وآدابها ويوضح الآثار العميقة للأدب العربي على نظيره الأمريكي”.
ونوهت بأن المعرض يكشف أيضا المراحل الثلاث المتميزة للهجرة العربية ابتداء من مطلع القرن التاسع عشر حتى منتصف عام 1965، وكيف تطور مجتمعنا العربي في الولايات المتحدة طوال هذه الفترة، حيث تضمنت الموجات الثلاث لحركة الهجرة العربية إلى الولايات المتحدة في الأساس عربا من سوريا ومن لبنان، ويتناول المعرض أسباب الهجرة وظروف المهاجرين الأوائل خلال فترة الاندماج والتكيف.
