QatarEnergy Expands its Presence Offshore Cyprus

Doha: A consortium comprising affiliates of QatarEnergy and ExxonMobil signed an exploration and production sharing contract (EPSC) with the Republic of Cyprus for the offshore Block 5 located southwest of the island.

This is QatarEnergys second exploration block in the Republic of Cyprus, in addition to Block 10, which was awarded to the same consortium in 2017 and resulted in the ‘Glaucus’ gas discovery announced in February 2019 with estimated in-place resources of 5 to 8 trillion cubic feet of gas. Further assessments are planned over the coming months to further refine this estimate.

Under the terms of the EPSC, QatarEnergy will hold a 40 percent working interest in Block 5 while ExxonMobil will be the operator and will hold a 60 percent working interest.

Commenting on the signing, HE the Minister of State for Energy Affairs, the President and CEO of QatarEnergy Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, said: “We are pleased with the signing of this EPSC, which expands our footprint in Cyprus. As confirmed by our discovery in Block 10, this region is promising and has very good potential for hydrocarbon exploration. We look forward to continuing to collaborate with the government of Cyprus and with our long-term strategic partner ExxonMobil to contribute to the exploration of natural resources in the Republic of Cyprus, and bring a significant addition to our growing international portfolio.”

Block 5 covers an area of 4,500 km2 in water depths of up to 2,500 meters, and is adjacent to Block 10.

الدوحة: وقع تحالف مكون من قطر للطاقة وإكسون موبيل، اتفاقية مع حكومة جمهورية قبرص، للاستكشاف والتنقيب والمشاركة بالإنتاج في المنطقة رقم 5 الواقعة جنوب شرق جزيرة قبرص.

وهذه هي ثاني منطقة استكشاف لقطر للطاقة في جمهورية قبرص، حيث تم توقيع اتفاقية للاستكشاف والتنقيب والمشاركة بالإنتاج عام2017 في المنطقة رقم 10 لنفس التحالف، والتي أثمرت عن اكتشاف حقل غاز /غلاوكوس/ الذي تم الإعلان عنه في فبراير 2019، والذي يقدر حجمه بما يتراوح بين 5 و8 تريليون قدم مكعب من الغاز بناء على المعطيات الأولية.

وبموجب الاتفاقية، ستمتلك قطر للطاقة حصة تبلغ 40 في المنطقة رقم 5، بينما ستمتلك إكسون موبيل حصة تبلغ 60 وستكون المشغل في المنطقة.

وبهذه المناسبة، صرح سعادة المهندس سعد بن شريدة الكعبي وزير الدولة لشؤون الطاقة، العضو المنتدب والرئيس التنفيذي لقطر للطاقة، قائلا:”نحن سعداء بتوقيع هذه الاتفاقية، والتي ستوسع من تواجدنا في قبرص والتي نعتقد أنها منطقة واعدة لاستكشاف الهيدروكربونات، حيث حققنا اكتشافا مهما في المنطقة رقم 10، ونتطلع إلى الاستمرار بالتعاون مع الجهات الحكومية القبرصية، جنبا إلى جنب مع شريكنا الاستراتيجي إكسون موبيل، للمساهمة في استكشاف الثروات الطبيعية في جمهورية قبرص وتعزيز محفظة أصولنا الدولية المتنامية”.

وتغطي المنطقة رقم 5، والتي تقع إلى جوار المنطقة رقم 10، مساحة تبلغ 4500 كيلومتر مربع في أعماق مياه تبلغ 2500 متر.
