Al Thumama Stadium with its Unique Design is a Bridge for Communication Between Cultures

Doha: Engineer Khalifa Al Mana, Al Thumama Stadium Project Manager, expressed his pride and the teams pride in filling the stadium with thousands of fans during the hosting of HH the 2021 Amir Cup Final between Al Rayyan and Al Sadd clubs last Friday night.
HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, witnessed the announcement of the readiness of the new World Cup edifice in conjunction with the Cup final, which in itself is an honor for everyone who participated in preparing for that moment.
“It was a really emotional moment for me and the rest of the team to see the stadium filled with fans and inaugurated by HH the Amir,” said Al Mana. “It was the perfect culmination of many years of hard work and knowing that the stadium was designed and delivered by a Qatari team made it even more special.”
Khalifa Al Mana has always wanted to play a role in Qatars rapid development, as a chemical engineering graduate from Texas A&M University at Qatar, Al Mana joined the countrys expansive oil and gas sector, where he worked for several years before moving to another key project in the countrys growth: the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
Designed by Qatari architect Ibrahim M. Jaidah, Al Thumama Stadiums shape and exterior resemble the gahfiya, a traditional woven cap worn by men and boys across the Arab region, Every fan who attended the match was gifted a gahfiya with the name of the stadium inscribed in it.
Al Mana said: “The stadiums design is not only inspired by a symbol of our culture, but it is designed by a Qatari architect and the multinational team that eventually built it was led by Qataris as well. Having such a strong presence of Qataris in every aspect of the project is yet another example of how local talent can deliver world-class projects.”
Al Mana joined the project during the schematic design process, just after the winning design was chosen from a field of entrants, all tasked with creating a stadium inspired by the gahfiya. Although the stadiums design unveiled an opportunity for local culture to shine, it also presented the project team with some challenges as well.
Plans for the stadiums precinct include more than 3km of running and cycling tracks, an aquatics centre, multipurpose halls and spaces for local eateries and retail outlets, as with every stadium built for Qatar 2022, Al Thumama has a robust legacy plan that will ensure tournament venues remain relevant to communities long after the final whistle is blown at the first FIFA World Cup in the Middle East and Arab world.
“Perhaps one of the most gratifying things about working on the project is knowing that the Al Thumama community will now be equipped with more than a football stadium, but with a world-class complex that will offer them a number of facilities they can continue to enjoy. Once we remove the top tier of the stadiums seating after the World Cup, we will use that space to build a sports medicine hospital, along with a boutique hotel,” said Al Mana.
For Al Mana, however, the true legacy of the stadium is something that is not tangible at all, but rather lies in the cultural significance of its symbolism, and the way the stadiums design will resonate with fans inside the country and beyond.
“Having the stadium design embody something that is synonymous with Qatar and the region will enable it to be a bridge for cultures to meet and learn more about each other. Every culture around the world has a traditional headdress and so this stadium is universal in that way, embodying the spirit of a global tournament like the World Cup,” concluded Al Mana.
Al Thumama Stadium is the sixth tournament-ready stadium and the fifth to be inaugurated. It will host matches up to the quarter-finals stage of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

“We needed to replicate all the intricacies of the gahfiyas embroidery on a large scale. This meant ensuring that we used the right type of material, that beams were placed in a manner that didnt disrupt the pattern and that the opening on top of the stadium was big enough to allow sun in onto the grass, but small enough to recreate the head caps shape,” said Al Mana.
He continued: “We also wanted to make sure the stadiums iconic circular shape and embroidery patterns were reflected in the precinct, so that fans will enjoy an uninterrupted visual experience from the minute they set foot into the area surrounding the venue.”
Al Manea concluded, “All peoples have their own traditional hat or head covering, and the global character of Al Thumama Stadium lies in a design that celebrates a heritage aspect of a degree of importance that touches the lives of peoples of different cultures and diversity, and embodies the essence of a global tournament such as the World Cup, which aims primarily to bring people closer together.” between people and promoting communication between all peoples and cultures from around the world.”
In 2014, Al Mana joined the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) as a project manager for the Al Thumama Stadium project a Qatar 2022 venue that was inaugurated last week when it hosted HH the Amir Cup Final between Al Rayyan and Al Sadd, tickets were sold out for the opening as Qatar hosted a capacity crowd for the first time since the COVID-19 outbreak.

الدوحة: أعرب المهندس خليفة المانع مدير مشروع استاد الثمامة، عن فخره وفريق العمل بامتلاء الاستاد بآلاف المشجعين خلال استضافة نهائي كأس الأمير 2021 بين ناديي الريان والسد مساء الجمعة الماضي.
وقد شهد حضرة صاحب السمو الشيخ تميم بن حمد آل ثاني أمير البلاد المفدى، الإعلان عن جاهزية الصرح المونديالي الجديد بالتزامن مع نهائي الكأس، وهو ما يعد في حد ذاته تشريفا لكل من شارك في الإعداد لتلك اللحظة.
وقال المانع إن لحظة تدشين الاستاد كانت بمثابة تتويج لجهود فريق العمل على مدى سنوات طويلة، خاصة مع تصميم الاستاد وتشييده بأيدي الكوادر القطرية، واستقباله للمشجعين بكامل طاقته الاستيعابية، ولأول مرة منذ بداية جائحة كورونا (كوفيد-19).
واستوحي تصميم الاستاد من القحفية، قبعة الرأس التقليدية التي يرتديها الرجال والصبية في أنحاء العالم العربي. واحتفاء بالتصميم الفريد للصرح الرياضي الجديد تسلم كل مشجع حضر الافتتاح الأسبوع الماضي قحفية تحمل اسم استاد الثمامة.
وفي هذا السياق أضاف المانع:” لم تقتصر الرمزية التي يحملها الاستاد على تصميمه الذي يجسد جانبا أصيلا من ثقافتنا، بل جاء إبداع هذا التصميم بأيدي المعماري القطري، المهندس إبراهيم الجيدة، كما شهدت مراحل تشييد الاستاد حضورا فاعلا للكوادر القطرية، الأمر الذي يبرهن على ما تمتلكه قطر من كفاءات قادرة على تنفيذ مشاريع عالمية المستوى”.
وانضم المانع إلى فريق مشروع استاد الثمامة في مرحلة اعتماد المخطط الخاص بتصميم الاستاد، مباشرة بعد اختيار التصميم الفائز من بين تصاميم عدة شارك بها مجموعة من المهندسين المعماريين من أنحاء العالم، ضمن مسابقة لتصميم مخطط أولي مستوحى من القحفية العربية.
وعلى الرغم من أن فكرة التصميم أتاحت الفرصة لإلقاء الضوء على الموروث الثقافي في قطر والمنطقة، إلا أن فريق العمل واجه العديد من التحديات، وأشار المانع إلى أن فريقه أراد تكرار التفاصيل الدقيقة للنقوش التي تميز القحفية على امتداد الاستاد، وترتب على ذلك استخدام النوع الملائم من المواد، ووضع الألواح بطريقة لا تؤثر على الصورة الكلية للتصميم.
وحول توفير عنصر الإضاءة مع الحفاظ على جوهر التصميم، قال المانع “أردنا أن تكون الفتحة في سقف الاستاد متسعة بما يكفي لدخول أشعة الشمس الضرورية لعشب الأرضية، وأن تكون في الوقت ذاته صغيرة الحجم بحيث تبدو شبيهة بالقحفية”.
وتابع “حرصنا أيضا على أن تضم المنطقة المحيطة بالاستاد تصاميم تعكس الشكل الدائري الذي يميز الاستاد، وأشكالا أخرى تجسد أنماط التطريز في القحفية، بما يضمن استمتاع المشجعين بتجربة بصرية متواصلة منذ لحظة وصولهم إلى محيط الاستاد”.
وكما هو الحال في بقية استادات قطر 2022 يضمن استاد الثمامة بناء إرث مستدام يعود بالنفع على المجتمع المحلي لأجيال قادمة بعد نهاية منافسات البطولة العام المقبل. وتشمل الخطط المقررة للمنطقة المحيطة بالاستاد إنشاء مسار مخصص للجري وآخر للدراجات الهوائية على مسافة تمتد لأكثر من 3 كيلومترات، إلى جانب حوض للسباحة، وقاعات متعددة الاستخدام، ومساحات مخصصة لعدد من المطاعم والمحال التجارية.
وفي هذا السياق أكد المانع أن من أكثر الأمور التي تبعث على السعادة للعمل في هذا المشروع الاطلاع على تفاصيل إرث الاستاد والفوائد التي ستعود على منطقة الثمامة، والتي لن تقتصر على تشييد استاد لكرة القدم، بل تمتد لتشمل العديد من الجوانب التي تعود بمزايا كثيرة على سكان المنطقة.
وأضاف “تغمرني مشاعر الفخر والسرور بتحقيق الإنجاز، لأن المنافع المرتبطة باستاد الثمامة تشمل إنشاء مجمع عالمي المستوى، يوفر العديد من المرافق الخدمية والترفيهية لسكان المنطقة، حيث من المقرر بناء مستشفى للطب الرياضي وفندق عصري صغير، بعد تفكيك الطبقة العلوية من المدرجات عقب إسدال الستار على منافسات كأس العالم”.
ويرى المانع أن الإرث الحقيقي للاستاد يتمثل في الأهمية الثقافية التي يرمز لها التصميم في محاكاته للقحفية العربية، والتي تحمل مكانة خاصة تبعث على الفخر والاعتزاز بالنفس لدى المواطنين القطريين والشعوب العربية على حد سواء، مؤكدا أن هذه الأيقونة المعمارية سيكون لها تأثير واضح في نفوس المشجعين من داخل قطر وخارجها.
وتابع “يجسد التصميم الفريد للصرح المونديالي، رمزا وثيق الصلة بالكرامة والاعتزاز بالنفس في قطر والعالم العربي، ويعتبر الاستاد المونديالي بتصميمه الفريد جسرا للتواصل بين الثقافات وحافزا للتعرف على التقاليد الغنية والمتنوعة للشعوب من أنحاء العالم”.
واختتم المانع “لدى كافة الشعوب قبعة أو غطاء الرأس التقليدي الخاص بها، ويكمن الطابع العالمي لاستاد الثمامة في تصميم يحتفي بجانب تراثي على قدر من الأهمية يمس حياة الشعوب على اختلاف ثقافاتها وتنوعها، كما يجسد جوهر بطولة عالمية مثل كأس العالم، والتي تهدف بالأساس إلى التقريب بين الناس وتعزيز التواصل بين كافة الشعوب والثقافات من مختلف أنحاء العالم”.
يشار إلى أن المهندس خليفة المانع عمل في قطاع النفط والغاز في قطر عدة سنوات بعد تخرجه من جامعة تكساس إي أند أم في قطر، قبل انضمامه إلى فريق اللجنة العليا للمشاريع والإرث في العام 2014، للعمل في واحد من أهم المشاريع في مسيرة النمو التي تشهدها البلاد، والإسهام في مهمة تنظيم أول نسخة من مونديال كرة القدم في العالم العربي والشرق الأوسط.
ويعد استاد الثمامة سادس الاستادات جاهزية لاستضافة مونديال قطر 2022، ويتسع لأربعين ألف مشجع، ويستضيف مباريات في بطولة كأس العالم FIFA قطر 2022 من مرحلة المجموعات حتى الدور ربع النهائي، كما يشهد مباريات في بطولة كأس العرب التي تستضيفها قطر نهاية العام الجاري.
