Qatar University’s Events for Cyber Week Kick Off

Doha: KINDI Center for Computing Research at Qatar University College of Engineering (QU-CENG) kicked off Cyber Week 2021, with the participation of experts and researchers in the area of cyber security and artificial intelligence from the State of Qatar and abroad.

Sponsored by Dolphin Energy Limited, and Thales Group, under the title ‘Towards a smart and secure future’, the events include presentation and workshops on the field of cyber security – which covers various sectors, and the challenges related to it on this level, in addition to artificial intelligence, which represents a new revolution that opens unlimited areas that constitute a turning point for human society.

The organizers of the events affirmed that Cyber Week represents an opportunity for the exchange of discussions between experts and researchers from the State of Qatar and other countries in the region, about cooperation mechanisms to establish joint programs in cybersecurity and artificial intelligence.

In her opening speech, Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies at QU Prof Mariam Al Maadeed said: “Through this week, QU is supporting the vision of the National Cyber Security and Artificial Intelligence Strategies, which represent roadmaps to raising the awareness of the importance of cyber security and artificial intelligence, and contribute to the preservation of the fundamental rights and values of Qatari society.”

“This week also comes to urge the need to develop mechanisms to combat cybercrime, increase awareness of its risks, and the importance of raising and enhancing the level of security related to this type of crime in public and private organizations and institutions, in addition to keeping abreast of modern technologies that make electronic systems more secure and cohesive, and better able to address cybercrime challenges to address cross-border crime and cyber-attacks” she added.

Commenting on the week’s theme, KINDI Center for Computing Research Director Dr. Abdulaziz Al Ali said: “This year’s Cyber Week marks the beginning of a new era for KINDI as the center’s research scope expands to include Artificial Intelligence, its sub disciplines such as machine learning, along with their ubiquitous modern applications.”

“We also remain committed to our flagship Cyber Security research track as we have always been since the center’s inception,” Dr. Al Ali explained, adding “The addition of AI will only help bolster our research activities by enabling the center to work on multidisciplinary projects such as AI in health, environment, agriculture, energy, education, as well as in cyber security.”

“In alignment with Qatar’s National Vision, this expansion will undoubtedly build national capacity in these ever-more-important fields given the center’s exposure to the largest university level student body in the country at QU,” he said.

He also explained that cyber-crime has become more sophisticated over the years and on larger scales urging the need to build more advanced methods to cope with them, and that modern approaches resort to using AI techniques to build resilient systems that target modern attacks, adding that having the expertise in AI is now more important than ever to address such threats.

“The advancements enabled today by AI cannot be overstated, and we are witnessing a change that will redefine the jobs and norms of the future,” Dr. Al Ali added, noting that AI is already being used in several industry and government sectors as well as in everyone’s smartphones, smart watches and soon smart homes.

الدوحة: أطلقت جامعة قطر، يوم أمس، فعاليات الأسبوع السيبراني التي ينظمها مركز الكندي لبحوث الحوسبة، بكلية الهندسة، وسط مشاركة نخبة من الخبراء والباحثين في مجال الأمن السيبراني والذكاء الاصطناعي من دولة قطر وخارجها.

وتتضمن الفعاليات التي ترعاها شركة /دولفين/ للطاقة المحدودة وشركة /تاليس/، عروضا وورش عمل في مجال الأمن السيبراني الذي يغطي قطاعات متعددة، وما يرتبط به من تحديات على هذا الصعيد، وكذلك الذكاء الاصطناعي الذي يمثل ثورة جديدة تفتح مجالات غير محدودة تشكل نقطة تحول للمجتمع البشري.

وأكد القائمون على هذه الفعاليات أن الأسبوع السيبراني يمثل فرصة للتباحث بين الخبراء والباحثين من دولة قطر ودول المنطقة الأخرى حول آليات التعاون للتأسيس لبرامج مشتركة في الأمن السيبراني والذكاء الاصطناعي، حيث قالت البروفيسورة مريم المعاضيد نائب رئيس جامعة قطر للبحث والدراسات العليا: “نسعى من خلال هذا الأسبوع لدعم رؤية الاستراتيجية الوطنية للأمن السيبراني واستراتيجية الذكاء الاصطناعي، اللتين تمثلان خريطة طريق للمضي قدما نحو تعزيز الأمن السيبراني في دولة قطر والمساهمة في صناعة وتطوير حلول وطنية تهتم بالمصلحة العامة وتحافظ على الحقوق والقيم الأساسية للمجتمع القطري”.

وأضافت:” أن فعاليات الأسبوع السيبراني تأتي في وقت تواجه المجتمعات فيه تحديات في مجال الأمن السيبراني والذكاء الاصطناعي على مستوى الحكومات والمؤسسات والأفراد، لا سيما القطاعات الحيوية المتعددة في هذا الفضاء السيبراني اللامتناهي والمعرض للاختراق بأي لحظة، والإضرار ببيانات الأفراد والحكومات”.

وأكدت أن هذه التحديات تفرض على الجميع من باحثين وخبراء ومراكز ومؤسسات بحثية معنية، تكثيف الجهود والتعاون للحفاظ على سلامة أفراد المجتمع وشبكات البنية التحتية وتدعيمها بكل وسائل الأمن والحماية الممكنة.

كما أشارت إلى الفرص التي يوفرها الذكاء الاصطناعي لخدمة الإنسانية.. وقالت:” نشهد اليوم طفرة في تسخير تكنولوجيا الذكاء الاصطناعي لإيجاد حلول ذات فاعلية وجدوى غير مسبوقة في جميع المجالات والصناعات”.. لافتة إلى دور هذه التكنولوجيا أثناء مواجهة فيروس COVID-19.

ودعت نائب رئيس جامعة قطر للبحث والدراسات العليا إلى ضرورة مواكبة التطورات العالمية في هذا المجال، ومواجهة التحديات المرتبطة به كإيجاد سياسات جديدة متعلقة باستخدام الذكاء الاصطناعي.

بدوره، قال الدكتور خالد كمال ناجي عميد كلية الهندسة بجامعة قطر:” تولي كلية الهندسة اهتماما بالغا بالأمن السيبراني والذكاء الاصطناعي من خلال التنسيق مع العديد من الجهات المحلية والدولية لعمل أبحاث متقدمة في هذا المجال، بالإضافة لتنظيم الدورات المتخصصة وكذلك البرامج التي تستهدف تدعيم الأمن السيبراني والذكاء الاصطناعي على المستوى الوطني بالتعاون مع مختلف الجهات الحكومية”.

ولفت إلى أن “فعاليات الأسبوع السيبراني تأتي كذلك بغرض توحيد الجهود مع الشركاء للخروج بآليات وبرامج عملية تكفل حماية برامج الأمن السيبراني والذكاء الاصطناعي للمؤسسات لتدعيم شبكات البنية التحتية ضد القرصنة”.

وأضاف:” بالرغم من وجود تطور في أنظمة بعض المؤسسات لكنها ليست بمنأى عن الهجمات الإلكترونية، بسبب تطور آليات وأساليب القراصنة الإلكترونيين، ومن هنا لا بد لجميع المؤسسات من وضع خطة لتطوير البنية التحتية لتكنولوجيا المعلومات والاتصالات داخل المؤسسات”.

من ناحيته، قال الدكتور عبدالعزيز العلي مدير مركز الكندي لبحوث الحوسبة:” يمثل الأسبوع السيبراني لهذا العام بداية خطة جديدة للمركز، حيث يتوسع نطاق أبحاث المركز ليشمل الذكاء الاصطناعي وتخصصاتها الفرعية مثل التعلم الآلي، جنبا إلى جنب مع تطبيقاتها الحديثة في كل المجالات”.

وأوضح الدكتور العلي، “أن اهتمام المركز سيبقى كذلك على أبحاث الأمن السيبراني كما كان منذ تأسيسه، لكنه يضيف الذكاء الاصطناعي ليتمكن من العمل في مشاريع متعددة التخصصات مثل الذكاء الاصطناعي في الصحة، والبيئة، والزراعة، والطاقة، والتعليم، وكذلك في الأمن السيبراني، وذلك تماشيا مع الرؤية الوطنية لدولة قطر.. مؤكدا أن هذا التوسع سيؤدي إلى بناء القدرات الوطنية في هذه المجالات الأكثر أهمية”.

ونبه إلى دور الذكاء الاصطناعي لمواجهة التهديدات السيبرانية عبر بناء أنظمة مرنة تستجيب للتطورات التي تشهدها هذه التهديدات، فضلا عن أهميته في العديد من القطاعات الصناعية والحكومية وكذلك في الهواتف الذكية والساعات الذكية والمنازل الذكية للجميع قريبا.
