Google to invest $1 billion to lift Africa internet access

LAGOS: Google plans to invest $1 billion in Africa over the next five years to ensure access to fast and cheaper internet and will back startups to support the continent’s digital transformation, it said on Wednesday.
The unit of U.S. tech company Alphabet Inc made the announcement at a virtual event where it launched an Africa Investment Fund, through which it will invest $50 million in startups, providing them with access to its employees, network and technologies.
In collaboration with not-for-profit organisation Kiva, Google will also provide $10 million in low interest loans to help small businesses and entrepreneurs in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa get through the economic hardship created by COVID-19.
“Today I’m excited to reaffirm our commitment to the continent through an investment of $1 billion over five years to support Africa’s digital transformation to cover a range of initiatives from improved connectivity to investment in startups,” said Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet.
Google said a programme pioneered last year in Kenya in partnership with Safaricom that allows customers to pay for 4G-enabled phones in instalments would be expanded across the continent with mobile operators such as MTN, Orange and Vodacom.
The company has been building an undersea cable to link Africa and Europe, which it says will bring faster internet and lower connectivity costs.

أعلنت شركة “غوغل” يوم الأربعاء أنها ستستثمر مليار دولار في السنوات الخمس القادمة لإتاحة الوصول إلى شبكة الإنترنت بشكل أسرع وبأسعار معقولة ولدعم ريادة الأعمال في إفريقيا.
ويطرح الاعتماد على الانترنت مشكلة في إفريقيا حيث أقل من ثلث سكان القارة البالغ عددهم 1,3 مليار نسمة متصلون بإنترنت النطاق العريض، وفق البنك الدولي.
غير أن القارة، ومع قرابة نصف عدد السكان دون سن 18 عاما، تمثل سوقا واعدا.
وبحسب “غوغل” ورئيس “ألفابيت”، سوندار بيشاي فقد أحرزت “خطوات كبيرة” في السنوات القليلة الماضية، لكن هناك حاجة لبذل مزيد من الجهود لجعل “الإنترنت متاحة وبأسعار معقولة ومفيدة لكل إفريقي”.
وسيدعم هذا الاستثمار التحول الرقمي عن طريق ضمان تحسين قدرة الشبكة والوصول إليها، حسبما قال في بيان.
وستخصص الأموال، من بين أمور أخرى، لتطوير البنى التحتية ومن بينها الكابل البحري إكويانو، الذي سيربط جنوب إفريقيا وناميبيا ونيجيريا وسانت هيلين بأوروبا.
وتعهدت “غوغل” قبل أربع سنوات بتدريب نحو 10 ملايين إفريقي من الشبان، وشركات صغيرة على المهارات الرقمية.
وقال المدير الإداري لـ”غوغل إفريقيا” نينيت غاجريا: “أؤمن بشدة أن لا أحد يستطيع حل مشكلات إفريقيا الكبرى أكثر من المطورين الشبان ومؤسسي الشركات الناشئة في إفريقيا”.
ومن العراقيل أمام الوصول إلى الانترنت أيضا أسعار الهواتف الذكية.
وقالت “غوغل” إنها ستدخل في شراكة مع عملاق الاتصالات في كينيا “سفاريكوم” لإطلاق هواتف أندرويد بأسعار معقولة، لشريحة المستخدمين لأول مرة.
وسيتم إطلاق المشروع لاحقا في أنحاء القارة مع شركات اتصالات أخرى مثل “ايرتيل” و”إم.تي.إن” و”أورانج” و”فوداكوم”.
