One million trees will be planted before the 2022 World Cup

Doha: Engineer Mohammed Al-Khoury, Director of the Public Parks Department at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment, confirmed that the planting of one million trees will be completed before the 2022 World Cup.

Eng. Mohammed Al Khouri said at a press conference held at the headquarters of the Department of Parks yesterday: The initiative was launched by His Excellency the Prime Minister on the sidelines of the agricultural exhibition in 2019, with the aim of strengthening Qatar’s role in the Paris Treaty on Climate Change,

Its launch, as a contribution from the ministry’s Department of Climate Change, has been useful because the interest in beauty is receiving considerable attention from the state. He pointed out that beauty in countries with a desert climate in the Gulf region is not easy, as it is difficult to maintain an ideal atmosphere for the growth of trees in the Gulf region to ensure their continuity.

Many questions were often raised by some members of the community regarding the slow pace of afforestation, as well as the afforestation of streets and areas without others.

He pointed out that the afforestation process needs the availability of several factors to ensure its continuity, the availability of water comes first and the Public Works Authority “Ashghal” in its new projects is keen on the presence of treated water systems in the streets. However, with regard to the areas and streets where the infrastructure has been completed, the treated water system in these areas remains incomplete and Ashghal, for its part, is trying to speed up its supply of irrigation systems so that the cosmetic authority can carry out its afforestation tasks.

He pointed out that the administration in carrying out afforestation operations focuses on local trees such as ghaf, al-ceder, as well as trees that use less water to overcome the issue of water scarcity, pointing out in this context the keenness of the Ministry of Municipality and environment to use the best irrigation networks in the Gulf region, which gives plants their needs without any waste of water, as all gardens and streets are centrally irrigated through an existing control room of the Department of Parks, as well as some programs that allow to reduce the amount of water used by the tree without affecting its growth.

He noted that the ministry is focusing on planting shade trees in gardens with the aim of reducing carbon emissions, increasing the proportion of oxygen in the air, and focusing on the diversity of trees that are planted. He stressed that the availability of land controls the construction of gardens within the Furjan, He pointed out that some of Al-Furjan gardens are very old like the old airport area, so there are no spaces to create gardens inside. He stressed that there are many entities and institutions that contributed with the Ministry to the initiative of planting one million trees, including some embassies in The State of Qatar, He pointed out that most gardens in Qatar are irrigated with sweet water, and treated water has a high level of quality standards and is checked periodically.

الدوحة: أكّد المهندسُ محمد الخوري مدير إدارة الحدائق العامة بوزارة البلدية والبيئة أنَّ زراعةَ المليون شجرة سوف تكتمل قبل حلول موعد كأس العالم 2022. وقال المهندس محمد الخوري في مؤتمر صحفي عُقد بمقر إدارة الحدائق العامة أمس: إن المبادرة تم تدشينها من جانب معالي رئيس مجلس الوزراء على هامش المعرض الزراعي في عام 2019، وذلك بهدف تعزيز دور قطر في معاهدة باريس الخاصة بالتغيّر المناخي، وقد جاء إطلاقها كمساهمة من إدارة التغيّر المناخي بالوزارة، مفيدًا بأن الاهتمام بالتجميل بات يحظى باهتمام كبير من جانب الدولة. ولفت إلى أن التجميل في دول مُناخها صحراوي في منطقة الخليج أمرٌ ليس باليسير، حيث يكون من الصعوبة بمكان المحافظة على توفير جو مثالي لنموّ الأشجار فيها بما يضمن استمراريتها.

ونوّه بأنه كثيرًا ما تُثار تساؤلات عديدة من جانب بعض أفراد المجتمع تتعلّق ببطء عمليات التشجير، علاوة على تشجير شوارع ومناطق دون أخرى.

مشيرًا إلى أنَّ عملية التشجير تحتاج إلى توافر عدة عوامل تضمن استمراريتها، يأتي توافر المياه في مقدمتها وتحرص هيئة الأشغال العامة في مشروعاتها الجديدة على وجود شبكات مياه مُعالجة في الشوارع، غير أنه فيما يتعلق بالمناطق والشوارع التي اكتملت فيها البنية التحتية، فإنَّ شبكة المياه المعالجة في هذه المناطق لا تزال غير مُكتملة وتحاول الهيئة من جانبها الإسراع في تزويدها بشبكات الري حتى يتسنى للجهة المسؤولة عن التجميل القيام بمهام عملها في التشجير. وأشار إلى أن الإدارة عند القيام بعمليات التشجير تركز على الأشجار المحلية مثل الغاف، والسدر، وكذلك الأشجار التي تستخدم كَميات أقل من المياه للتغلّب على قضية شحّ المياه، لافتًا في هذا الإطار إلى حرص وزارة البلدية والبيئة على استخدام أفضل شبكات الري على مُستوى منطقة الخليج، والتي تعطي النباتات احتياجاتها بدون أي هدر للمياه، حيث يتم ري جميع الحدائق والشوارع بشكل مركزي من خلال غرفة تحكم موجودة بإدارة الحدائق العامة، علاوة على اتباع بعض البرامج التي تُتيح تقليل كَمية المياه التي تستخدمها الشجرة دون التأثير في نموّها.

ونوّه بأن الوزارة تركّز على زراعة أشجار الظل داخل الحدائق بهدف التقليل من الانبعاث الكربوني، وزيادة نسبة الأكسجين في الهواء، كما تركّز الوزارة على وجود تنوع في الأشجار التي يتم زراعتها. وشدّد على أن توفر الأراضي يتحكم في عملية إنشاء الحدائق داخل الفرجان، لافتًا إلى أن بعض الفرجان قديمة جدًا مثل منطقة المطار القديم، وبالتالي فإنه لا توجد مساحات لإنشاء حدائق بداخلها. وأكد أن هناك جهاتٍ ومؤسساتٍ عديدةً ساهمت مع الوزارة في مبادرة زراعة المليون شجرة، ومن بينها بعض السفارات في دولة قطر، مشيرًا إلى أن أغلب الحدائق في قطر يتم ريها بالمياه الحلوة، كما أن المياه المعالجة تحظى بقدر عالٍ من معايير الجودة، ويتم فحصها بشكل دوري.
