Qatar likely to host Formula One race as per revised calendar

Formula One published a revised calendar for the remainder of the season on Saturday with the number of races dropping from a record 23 to 22 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Qatar expected to debut.
Three races were given new dates and one weekend in late November was left subject to confirmation with Qatar likely to fill it with a first grand prix at the Losail circuit used regularly by MotoGP.
While Formula One did not mention Qatar on the list, an announcement is expected soon.
The rejig followed this month’s cancellation of the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka for the second year in a row. Australia, Singapore, Canada and China were cancelled earlier.
Turkey’s Istanbul Park circuit will move from Oct. 3 to take Japan’s Oct. 10 slot.
The Mexican and Brazilian races will also be pushed back a week, to Nov. 7 and 14 respectively, with a new race to be announced on Nov. 21.
If Qatar gets the nod, that would make a Middle Eastern run to end the season with Saudi Arabia’s first race on Dec. 5 and Abu Dhabi on Dec. 12.
Formula One starts a European triple-header this weekend with Belgium followed by the return of the Dutch Grand Prix and then the Italian Grand Prix at Monza on successive weekends.
Those dates, as well as Russia’s race in Sochi on Sept. 26, remain as planned.
The U.S. Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, also retains its original date of Oct. 24.
Formula One chief executive Stefano Domenicali said there had been extensive discussions with promoters and national authorities.
“The pandemic continues to present the season with challenges but we have proven we can adapt and we are confident we can deliver a record-breaking 22 races this year despite a global pandemic,” added the Italian.
“I want to thank the promoters in Brazil, Mexico and Turkey for their patience and flexibility and we will provide the details of the final addition soon.”

وتضمن البرنامج الجديد أيضا تغييرات في مواعيد بعض السباقات، بينما لم تؤكد البطولة أحد المواعيد وسط تكهنات تحدثت عن إمكانية إقامة سباق في قطر للمرة الأولى في هذا الموعد خلال نوفمبر/تشرين الثاني المقبل، في حلبة لوسيل التي تستخدم بصورة منتظمة في سباقات الدراجات النارية. ورغم أن فورمولا 1 لم تذكر قطر في القائمة المعدلة صراحة، فإنه يتوقع صدور إعلان بهذا الصدد قريبا.
وجاء الإعلان عن التعديلات والمواعيد الجديدة بعد إلغاء سباق جائزة اليابان الكبرى للعام الثاني على التوالي في وقت سابق من الشهر الجاري، عقب إلغاء سباقات أستراليا وسنغافورة وكندا والصين قبل ذلك.
وبناء على البرنامج الجديد، فإن سباق جائزة تركيا الكبرى، الذي كان مقررا في الثالث من أكتوبر/تشرين الأول المقبل، سيقام في موعد سباق اليابان في العاشر من أكتوبر.
وتقرر أيضا تأخير موعدي سباقي المكسيك والبرازيل بواقع أسبوع واحد لكل منهما، ليقام هذان السباقان في السابع والـ14 من نوفمبر/تشرين الثاني على التوالي، بينما سيتم الإعلان عن سباق آخر يقام في 21 نوفمبر.
وإذا تمت الموافقة على سباق قطر، فإن الشرق الأوسط سيستضيف آخر ثلاثة سباقات من الموسم، حيث سيقام أول سباق في السعودية في الخامس من ديسمبر/ كانون الأول وسباق أبوظبي في الـ12 من الشهر نفسه. وبعد سباق بلجيكا الأحد، سيقام سباق هولندا العائد للبرنامج في الأسبوع التالي، يليه سباق جائزة إيطاليا الكبرى مباشرة.
ولم يطرأ أي تغيير على مواعيد هذه السباقات الثلاثة إلى جانب سباق جائزة روسيا الكبرى في حلبة سوتشي، والذي سيقام في موعده المقرر في 26 سبتمبر/أيلول المقبل من دون تغيير. وسيقام سباق جائزة أميركا الكبرى في أوستن بولاية تكساس في موعده الأصلي من دون تغيير أيضا في 24 أكتوبر.
