Can you imagine that your thoughts can be translated into sentences that others can easily read?
You can only imagine that in science fiction movies in cinema. But this is reality now, after scientists in the United States were able to create a device to help people who lost the ability to talk.
According to the German radio site for more than 10 years, researchers at U.S. University of UsC San Francisco have developed a neurological method that can help people who have lost the ability to speak for various reasons.
Surgeon and neurologist Edward Chang has already succeeded in developing a neurological technology that allows people with severe paralysis, leading to their loss of the ability to talk, to finally communicate with others, according to science website Science Daily.
In the first clinical trial of the new scientific innovation, using the nervous system, Chang was able to translate the brain signals of a severely paralyzed person into words that appeared as text on a screen so that others could easily read.
Chang points out that what he has achieved may be “the first successful representation of the process of decoding complete words from the brain of a paralyzed person who cannot speak,” and adds that this achievement gives great hope of restoring the ability to communicate using the natural speaking mechanism that lies within the human brain.
Every year, thousands of people lose the ability to speak because of clots, accidents or diseases, according to the results of the study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, which makes this new neural innovation a lifeline that could help all of them in the near future reconnect with others.
In this field, scientists have previously worked to restore the ability to communicate with others through technology that focuses on the spelling process and the movement of the arm or hand to write the letters that make up words.
But Chang’s modern technology is different in its ability to translate nerve signals sent from the brain to the muscles of sound and speaking, which can achieve “faster and more natural communication,” Chang said.
However, Chang would not have accessed the technology without the help of patients at UCLA’s Epilepsy Center in San Francisco, where patients agreed to undergo surgery aimed at identifying their epileptic seizures using electrical plates mounted on the surface of the brain.
These volunteers in the study did not suffer from a loss of ability to speak, but the study needed them initially in order to analyze the brain activity of the speaking process.
The results paved the way for subsequent clinical trials of patients who lacked the ability to speak.

ووفق موقع الإذاعة الألمانية فلأكثر من عشر سنوات، عمل باحثون بجامعة “يو سي سان فرانسيسكو” الأمريكية على تطوير وسيلة عصبية يمكنها مساعدة الأشخاص الذين فقدوا القدرة على الكلام لأسباب مختلفة.
ونجح جراح وأستاذ الأعصاب إدوارد شانغ بالفعل في تطوير تكنولوجيا عصبية تسمح للأشخاص الذين يعانون من شلل حاد، يؤدي لفقدانهم القدرة على الحديث، في التواصل أخيرا مع الأخرين، وفقا لموقع ساينس ديلي العلمي.
ففي أول تجربة سريرية للابتكار العلمي الجديد،تمكن شانغ باستخدام الجهاز العصبي من ترجمة إشارات المخ لدى مصاب بالشلل الحاد إلى كلمات تظهر كنص مكتوب على شاشة بحيث يمكن للأخرين قراءته بسهولة.
ويشير شانغ إلى أن ما حققه قد يعد “أول تمثيل ناجح لعملية فك شفرات مباشرة لكلمات كاملة من مخ شخص مصاب بالشلل ولا يمكنه الكلام”، كما يضيف أن ذلك الإنجاز يعطي أملا كبيرا في إستعادة القدرة على الاتصال باستخدام الألية الطبيعية الخاصة بعملية التحدث والتي تقع داخل مخ الإنسان.
ويفقد آلاف الأشخاص كل عام القدرة على الكلام بسبب الجلطات أو وقوع حوادث لهم أو كنتيجة للإصابة بأمراض معينة، وفقا لنتائج الدراسة المنشورة بمجلة نيو إنجلاند الطبية المتخصصة، وهو ما يجعل ذلك الابتكار العصبي الجديد طوق نجاة يمكن أن يساعد كل هؤلاء في المستقبل القريب على التواصل من جديد مع الأخرين.
وفي هذا المجال، عمل العلماء سابقا على إستعادة القدرة على الاتصال مع الأخرين من خلال تكنولوجيا تركز على عملية الهجاء وحركة الذراع أو اليد لكتابة الحروف المكونة للكلمات.
ولكن تختلف التكنولوجيا الحديثة التي يعتمدها شانغ عن غيرها في قدرتها على ترجمة الإشارات العصبية التي يتم إرسالها من المخ للعضلات الخاصة بخروج الصوت والتحدث، وهو ما يمكن أن يحقق “تواصل أكثر سرعة وطبيعية”، على حد وصف شانغ.
إلا أن شانغ لم يكن ليتوصل لتلك التكنولوجيا بدون مساعدة المرضى في مركز الصرع التابع لجامعة يو سي سان فرانسيسكو، إذ وافق المرضى هناك على خوض عمليات جراحية استهدفت تحديد مراكز ما ينتابهم من نوبات الصرعباستخدام صفائح كهربائية مثبتة على سطح المخ.
ولم يعان هؤلاء المتطوعون في الدراسة من فقدان القدرة على الحديث، وإنما احتاجت الدراسة لهم في البداية من أجل تحليل نشاط المخ الخاص بعملية التحدث.
ومهدت النتائج لإجراء تجارب سريرية لاحقة على المرضى الفاقدين للقدرة على الحديث.
