‘UFO’ in Japanese sky sets Twitter afire

TOKYO: The appearance of a mysterious white object in the sky over northern Japan on Wednesday set social media ablaze, with speculation ranging from UFOs to coronavirus and North Korean propaganda.
Television footage taken in the northeastern city of Sendai showed a balloon-like object above a cross, on which propellers seemed to be turning. Officials in the Sendai Weather Bureau said it had appeared near dawn and hung in the sky for hours, largely unmoving, until obscured by clouds.
By afternoon it was the third-most trending topic on Japanese Twitter, with theories including UFOs and North Korean balloons used to drop leaflets. One user said it could be spreading novel coronavirus, adding, “This gives me a very bad feeling, as if Godzilla might suddenly appear.”
“PopcornParty010” created a tongue-in-cheek mockup of a London Times front page with the banner headline “Sendai Annihilated: A Nightmare come True.”
Police could not be immediately reached for comment and a Sendai government official said inquiries were still proceeding, with both the size of the object and its origin, as well as its function, undetermined. No move had been made to retrieve it as of late afternoon.
“We have absolutely no idea what it is,” said a weather bureau spokesman, declining to give his name. “It may be some kind of weather monitoring equipment, but it definitely isn’t ours.

أثار جسم غامض يشبه البالون ظهر يوم الأربعاء في سماء اليابان، ضجة كبيرة على وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي. وأفادت وكالة الأنباء اليابانية “كيودو” أن الجسم الغريب شوهد فوق شمال شرق اليابان، وتظهر الصور أيضا شكلا يشبه التقاطع أسفل الجسم الغريب، ما أثار تكهنات بأنها تجربة علمية أو بالون لرصد الطقس.
غير أن مكتب وكالة الأرصاد الجوية اليابانية في سينداي بمحافظة مياجي أخبر وكالة كيودو نيوز أن الوكالة لم ترسل أي جهاز. وأضافت أنه لا الحكومة المحلية ولا قوات الدفاع المحلية تعرف ما هو هذا الجسم.
وخلق الجسم الطائر الكثير من الضجة على “تويتر”. وأفادت رويترز أن الآراء تراوحت بين الأجسام الغريبة والدعاية الكورية الشمالية.
وبعد ظهر يوم الأربعاء، أصبح الجسم الغريب ثالث أكثر الموضوعات تداولا عبر “تويتر” في اليابان، حيث استخدمت نظريات عديدة في محاولة تفسير الظاهرة، وكان أبرزها النظريات المتعلقة بالمؤامرة وكون الجسم الغريب له علاقة بفيروس كورونا، حتى أن أحدهم غرد قائلا: “هذا يعطيني شعورا سيئا للغاية، كما لو أن جودزيلا قد يظهر فجأة”.
وأشارت وكالة الأنباء اليابانية إلى أن الجسم أثار حالة من الرعب لدى بعض الذين بادروا بالاتصال بالشرطة والسلطات المحلية للإبلاغ عما شاهدوه.
وحلق رجال شرطة محافظة مياجي بطائرة هليكوبتر للتحقق من الجسم الذي يسير على ارتفاع أكثر من 2000 متر فوق سطح الأرض، ولكن لم يحددوا أصله وهويته بعد.
وقال مسؤول بالشرطة: “علينا فقط أن نراقب بأعيننا إلى أين يتجه”، إلا أنهم فقدوا الموقع الدقيق للجسم في المساء بعد أن حجبته السحب ما منع تعقبه.
