Qatar Museums Announces Spring 2021 Exhibitions

Doha: Qatar Museums has announced several exhibitions that will be presented across its cultural institutions throughout spring 2021. Members of the community can look forward to exhibitions covering a wider range of interests, including contemporary art, natural history and the art of collecting.
The list of new exhibitions for Qatar Museums includes the exhibition of Kader Attia: On Silence is a major solo exhibition that will be opened on March 7, 2021, at the Arab Museum of Modern Art, dedicated to the work of the artist over the last two decades. The exhibition will feature a wide range of work across all media and include site-specific installations, sculptures, collages, drawings, video, and photography. On Silence explores themes of postcolonial trauma and the ensuing decades of psychiatric ‘repair’ at the social and individual level. The artist’s intention and curatorial approach is to provoke the viewer’s emotional and physical experience while encountering works placed at various levels in the museum galleries, seen from above, from underneath, and from within but rarely straight on. There will be two important commissions featured in connection with Doha.
In March 2021, Mal Lawal 3 Exhibition will kick off in National Museum of Qatar. Following the success of its previous editions in 2012 and 2014, Mal Lawal evolves in 2020-2021 to provide a platform that brings together private collectors and helps support and further establish the practice of collecting in Qatar. The collections showcased in 2020-2021 present the personal stories of the collectors and highlight their passion for art, culture and heritage.
On 28 March 2021, Jeff Koons: Lost in America Exhibition will open its door at QM Gallery Al Riwaq. The largest solo survey to date of the work of the American artist Jeff Koons (b. 1955) in the Gulf region, as part of the 2021 Qatar-United States Year of Culture. It will feature over sixty artworks drawn from the full span of Koons’ four-decade long career, including many of the artist’s major works such as Rabbit (1986), Balloon Dog (1994-2000) and Play-Doh (1994-2014). Lost in America presents a panoramic view of American culture as seen through Koons’ own autobiography. Works from many of Koons’ best-known series like The New (1980-87), Banality (1988), Celebration (1994-), Popeye (2002-2013) and Antiquity (2008-) will be displayed alongside recent works exhibited for the first time.
In National Museum of Qatar, Seagrass Tales, Dugong Trails Exhibition will be displayed on 30 March 2021. The National Museum of Qatar, in collaboration with ExxonMobil Research Qatar, will present a special exhibition on dugongs. These shy marine mammals have inhabited the waters surrounding Qatar’s peninsula for more than 7,500 years. The Arabian Gulf is home to the world’s second-largest population of dugongs, after Australia. Recently, the largest herds in the world, comprising between 600 to 700 dugongs, have been recorded in Qatar. Holding both a special cultural and environmental significance, the dugong was chosen as the museum’s official mascot.
It is worth noting that there are exhibitions that have been opened in Qatar Museums and continue also during spring. The exhibition Grey Times marks the end of the fifth edition of the Fire Station’s Artist in Residence Programme. The artists showcasing their works include Aisha Al-Muhannadi, Ameera Al-Aji, Ebtesam Al-Hothi, Hadeer Omar, Haytham Sharrouf, Jaser Alagha, Latifa Al-Kuwari, Majdulin Nasrallah, Mariam Rafehi, Maryam Al-Maadhadi, Mashael Al Hejazi, Maysaa Almumin, Muna Al-Bader, Naila Al-Thani, Noor Yousef, Suzana Jouma, Hind Al Saad and Ameena Al Yousef.
Through 10 April 2021, A Falcons Eye: Tribute to Sheikh Saoud Al Thani will start at Museum of Islamic Art. The Exhibition celebrates the outstanding accomplishments of one of Qatar’ greatest collectors who was largely responsible for laying the foundation for Qatar Museum’s world class collections. The exhibition showcases more than 300 outstanding art works from prehistoric fossils and Egyptian antiquities to Orientalist paintings and masterpieces of the history of photography in a spectacular display following the concept of ancient (Renaissance) “cabinet of curiosities” reflecting Sheikh Saoud’s fascination with both natural history and the art world.

الدوحة: أعلنت متاحف قطر الأمس، عن تقديم مجموعة من المعارض الفنية الجديدة التي ستفتتحها المؤسسات الثقافية التابعة لها خلال ربيع 2021، وتغطي مجموعة كبيرة من الاهتمامات لأفراد المجتمع، بما في ذلك الفن المعاصر، والتاريخ الطبيعي، وفن جمع المقتنيات.
وتتضمن قائمة المعارض الجديدة لمتاحف قطر معرض قادر عطية: /عن الصمت/ وسيتم افتتاحه يوم 7 مارس المقبل في /متحف/: المتحف العربي للفن الحديث، وهو معرض فردي مخصص لأعمال الفنان خلال العقدين الماضيين، وسيشمل مجموعة واسعة من الأعمال المتعددة الوسائط، ويتضمن تركيبات خاصة بالموقع في متحف، ومنحوتات، والكولاج، ورسومات، وفيديو، وصورا فوتوغرافية. يتناول /عن الصمت/ موضوعات مخلفات ما بعد الاستعمار والعقود التي تلتها من /الإصلاح/ النفسي على المستوى الاجتماعي والفردي، إضافة إلى عملين جديدين تم التكليف بإعدادهما.
وفي شهر مارس المقبل سيتم افتتاح معرض /مال لوّل/ في نسخته الثالثة بمتحف قطر الوطني، حيث يعد بينالي /مال لوّل/ منصة تجمع لهواة جمع المقتنيات من الأفراد، الأمر الذي ساهم في دعم نشاط جمع المقتنيات وتعزيزه في دولة قطر، وبعد نجاح نسختي المعرض في 2012 و2014، تقرر إقامة /مال لوّل/ النسخة الثالثة في 2020-2021، ليكون أكثر تطوراً وإبداعاً حيث سيروي قصص جامعي المقتنيات من خلال مقتنياتهم المعروضة وسيلقي الضوء على شغفهم بالفن والثقافة والتراث.
كما تنظم متاحف قطر في 28 مارس بجاليري الرواق معرض /جيف كونز: تائهٌ في أمريكا/ ويعد أكبر معرض منفرد في منطقة الخليج لأعمال الفنان الأمريكي كونز (من مواليد 1955)، وذلك في إطار العام الثقافي قطر – الولايات المتحدة 2021، ليضم أكثر من ستين عملاً فنيًا مستمدًا من مسيرة كونز التي استمرت لأربعة عقود، بما في ذلك بعض الأعمال الأكثر شهرة لهذا الفنان مثل أرنب (1986) وكلب بالبالونات (1994-2000) ومعجون اللعب (1994-2014)، كما يقدم المعرض صورة للثقافة الأمريكية من خلال السيرة الذاتية لكونز، وسيتم عرض بعض مجموعات الأعمال الأكثر شهرة من بينها /جديد/ (1980-1987)، و/عاديّ/ (1988)، و/احتفال/ (1994)، إلى جانب أعمالٍ فنية حديثة ستعرض لأول مرة.
وفي متحف قطر الوطني تفتتح متاحف قطر معرض /حكايات بقر البحر: رحلات في مروج الأعماق/ في 30 مارس 2021، ويقدم المعرض الذي يقام بالتعاون مع إكسون موبيل للأبحاث قطر، موضوعا فنيا خاصاً عن بقرة البحر (الأطوم). حيث عاشت هذه الثدييات البحرية الكبيرة في المياه القطرية لأكثر من 7500 عام. ويُعد الخليج العربي ثاني أكبر تجمع لأبقار البحر في العالم بعد أستراليا. وقد تم مؤخرًا تسجيل أكبر تجمع لتلك الحيوانات في العالم في دولة قطر، حيث احتوى القطيع الواحد على (600 إلى 700 من أبقار البحر). ولأن بقرة البحر (الأطوم) تحمل أهمية ثقافية وبيئية خاصة تم اختيارها لتكون التميمة الرسمية لمتحف قطر الوطني.
جدير بالذكر أن هناك معارض تم افتتاحها بمتاحف قطر وتستمر كذلك خلال فترة الربيع وهي معرض /زمن رمادي/ الدورة الخامسة لبرنامج إقامة الفنانين ويستمر حتى 24 يوليو 2021 في جراج جاليري في مطافئ: مقر الفنانين، حيث يتم عرض أعمال الفنانين عائشة المهندي، وأميرة العجي، وابتسام الحوثي، وهدير عمر، وهيثم شروف، وجاسر الأغا، ولطيفة الكواري، ومجدولين نصر الله، ومريم رفاعي، ومريم المعضادي، ومشاعل الحجازي، وميساء المؤمن، ومنى البدر، ونائلة آل ثاني، ونور يوسف، وسوزانا جمعة، وهند آل سعد، وأمينة اليوسف.
كما يستمر معرض عين الصقر: في ذكرى الشيخ سعود آل ثاني في متحف الفن الإسلامي حتى يوم 10 أبريل 2021، حيث يحتفي المعرض بالإنجازات البارزة لواحد من أهم جامعي الفنون في قطر والذي يرجع له الفضل الكبير في وضع حجر الأساس الذي قامت عليه المجموعات الفنية في متاحف قطر. ويضم أكثر من 300 قطعة فنية تتنوع بين أحافير تعود لعصور ما قبل التاريخ، وآثار مصرية قديمة، ولوحات استشراقية، وروائع من الصور الفوتوغرافية التي توثِّق أزمنة مختلفة وتُعرَض بطريقة مبهرة تعكس مفهوم /حُجر العجائب/ القديم لتعكس بذلك ولع الشيخ سعود بالتاريخ الطبيعي والفنون.
