QPO’s Season Launch: A Confluence of Gulf Folk and Classical Masterpieces

Doha: The Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra (QPO) is preparing for its upcoming 2023/2024 season with a special event titled “Gulf Folk meets the Philharmonic.” Set to occur on September 2 at the Abdul Aziz Nasser Theatre in Souq Waqif, the aim of this performance is to combine traditional Gulf folk music with the melodies of a Western orchestra. This concert seeks to preserve and enrich the distinctive cultural heritage of the Gulf region, as stated by the QPO on their Instagram post.

The concert will pay tribute to Qatar’s deep maritime history, drawing inspiration from the traditional musical style known as ‘Fijiri,’ closely linked with pearl divers and the sea. Composed by Dr. Nasser Sahim, QPO’s Deputy Executive Director, and Dr. Amer Jaffar, this fusion of music will be guided by the renowned Uzbekistan Conductor, Kamoliddin Urinbaev.

This event marks the second instance of such a concert, building upon the success of last year’s performance in August.

Dr. Sahim underlines the significance of safeguarding and showcasing Gulf folk music, particularly Qatari folklore. He emphasizes that the QPO serves as a cultural representative of Qatar. By presenting local music through orchestral interpretations, the nation’s themes and cultures are not only displayed but also create a connection for cross-cultural comprehension.

He stated, “It is vital for us to offer something valuable and educate other communities about our themes, cultures, and the instruments we use in our music. Qatar’s economic and cultural advancements have led to a well-developed musical culture that matches these progressions.”

Furthermore, an array of five additional concerts are scheduled for the following month. On September 15, the Carmen concert featuring suites from Bizet’s renowned opera will take place. The evening will culminate with Schubert’s Symphony No. 9 in C Major, a masterpiece celebrated for its musical brilliance.

“A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” scheduled for September 19, will present melodies from Mendelssohn’s score for the play, coupled with Schumann’s Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major (Rhenish).

The enchanting compositions of Mozart and Beethoven will captivate the audience during the “An Evening with Mozart and Beethoven” concert on September 24. The grandeur of Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante in E-flat for Violin and Viola will be brought to life by the Philharmonic’s concertmaster, Joo Young Oh, and principal viola player, Giovanni Pasini.

Evoking nostalgia, the “Oldies Goldies” concert on September 27 will revive hits from the past, providing a nostalgic journey. Finally, on September 30, the audience can immerse themselves in “A Night of Tchaikovsky,” which will highlight the brilliance of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and Symphony No. 5.

All concerts, except the September 27 “Oldies Goldies” event, will be held at the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC), Auditorium 3. The latter will take place at the Qatar National Library.

سيُكرّم الحفل تاريخ قطر البحري الغني المستوحى من فن “الفجيري”، النمط الموسيقي التقليدي المرتبط ارتباطًا وثيقًا بالغواصين والبحر. سيتم تأليف هذا الدمج الموسيقي من قبل الدكتور ناصر سحيم، نائب المدير التنفيذي لـ أوركسترا قطر الفيلهارمونية، والدكتور عامر جعفر، وسيتم توجيهه من قِبَل الموسيقي المرموق من أوزبكستان، كاموليدن أورينبايف.

أكد الدكتور سحيم على أهمية الحفاظ على الموسيقى الشعبية الخليجية، ولا سيما الفلكلور القطري. وشدد على أن أوركسترا قطر الفيلهارمونية تعمل كسفير ثقافي لقطر. من خلال تقديم الموسيقى المحلية من خلال توجيهات أوركسترية، يتم عرض مواضيع وثقافات البلاد، ويساهم ذلك أيضًا في بناء جسر للتفاهم الثقافي عبر الثقافات المختلفة.
