FIFA asks leagues to use “common sense” over Floyd protests

World soccer’s governing body FIFA has asked competition organisers to use “common sense” with players who display messages of protest over the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man killed in police custody in the United States.
FIFA regulations bar players from displaying any “political, religious or personal slogans, statements or images” on their kit. Since 2014, this ban has included undershirts — a response to players lifting up their shirts to display a message when scoring.
However, several players protested during matches in Germany’s Bundesliga at the weekend, with Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho and Achraf Hakimi displaying undershirts with the message, “Justice for George Floyd” on Sunday.
Schalke 04 defender Weston McKennie displayed the same message on his armband in another game while Borussia Moenchengladbach’s Marcus Thuram knelt to honour Floyd after scoring against Union Berlin.
The German Football Association has said it was reviewing the incidents where the message was shown.
In a statement on Tuesday, FIFA said it “fully understands the depth of sentiment and concerns expressed by many footballers in light of the tragic circumstances of the George Floyd case”.
It added that applying the laws of the game was the responsibility of competition organisers, such as domestic leagues, who FIFA said “should use common sense and have in consideration the context surrounding the events”.
“FIFA had repeatedly expressed itself to be resolutely against racism and discrimination of any kind and recently strengthened its own disciplinary rules with a view to helping to eradicate such behaviors,” it added in the statement.
“FIFA itself has promoted many anti-racism campaigns which frequently carry the anti-racism message at matches organised under its own auspices.”
طالب رئيس الاتحاد الدولي لكرة القدم (“فيفا”) السويسري جاني إنفانتينو بـ”التصفيق وليس العقوبة” بحق اللاعبين في البوندسليجا الذين أعربوا عن تضامنهم مع المواطن الأمريكي الأسود جورج فلويد الذي قضى على يد شرطة بلاده، فيما دعت الهيئة الكروية الدولية الى “تحكيم المنطق” في التعامل مع فرض عقوبات محتملة عليهم بموجب قوانين اللعب.
واعتبر إنفانتينو في تصريحات أرسلها لوكالة فرانس برس أنه “لرفع أي غموض فيما يتعلق بمسابقات الفيفا، يجب أن تستحق الاحتجاجات الأخيرة للاعبين خلال مباريات البوندسليجا التصفيق وليس العقوبة”. وأضاف “يجب علينا جميعا أن نقول لا لأي شكل من أشكال العنصرية والتمييز. يجب علينا جميعا أن نقول لا للعنف وجميع أشكاله”.
وجاء هذا الموقف بعد يوم من الإعلان البوندسليجا فتح تحقيق في الموضوع.
وأكد الفيفا في بيان له انه “يتفهم (…) تماما عمق المشاعر والمخاوف التي عبر عنها العديد من لاعبي كرة القدم في أعقاب الظروف المأساوية لقضية جورج فلويد” البالغ من العمر 46 عاما والذي قضى اختناقا قبل نحو أسبوع، على أيدي شرطي أبيض في مينيابوليس ثبته على الأرض وركع فوق عنقه، في حادثة أثارت موجة احتجاجات عارمة متواصلة في عشرات المدن الأمريكية.. لكن الاتحاد الذي سبق له أن أطلق حملات عدة مناهضة للعنصرية، ألمح الى ان اتخاذ إجراء بحق اللاعبين في هذه الحالة، لن يكون بالضرورة إلزاميا.
وتابع “يُترك تطبيق قوانين اللعبة الصادرة عن ” إيفاب” لمنظمي البطولات الذين عليهم تحكيم المنطق والأخذ بالاعتبار الظروف المحيطة بالاحداث”.
وخلال مباريات عطلة نهاية الأسبوع في البوندسليجا، وجه عدد من اللاعبين رسائل تضامن مع فلويد. وأظهر لاعبا بوروسيا دورتموند الإنجليزي جايدون سانشو والمغربي أشرف حكيمي قميصا داخليا كتب عليه “العدالة لجورج فلويد”، بينما احتفل الفرنسي ماركوس تورام لاعب بوروسيا مونشنغلادباخ بتسجيل هدف من خلال الركوع على ركبة واحدة، ووضع لاعب شالكه الأمريكي ويستون ماكيني شارة حول ساعده كتب عليها “العدالة لجورج”.
