Weill Cornell Medicine holds graduation ceremony for 2020 batch online

Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar conducted the graduation ceremony of its 2020 batch online due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Broadcast live via the Internet, the virtual event saw 38 doctors, including 13 Qataris, receive their “Doctor of Medicine” certificate from Dr Javed Sheikh, the Dean of Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar.

Dr Sheikh praised the ambitious vision of Her Highness Sheikha Moza Bint Nasser, the Chairperson of the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, and Her Excellency Sheikha Hind bint Hamad al Thani, the Vice Chairperson and CEO of the foundation.

“Your professional future requires you to be committed and self-disciplined to achieve the accomplishments,” Dr Sheikh told the graduates.

“Recently, the world witnessed events that showed all of us that the medical profession requires a commitment more than any other profession, and it assured us all, and of course also to you, the fact You know it with the utmost knowledge that the burdens on doctors outweigh the practitioners of any other profession, but the doctors do not fail to fulfill the call because they make their sights set a noble goal and dedicate the rest of their lives to achieving them.”

He added that the medical profession, despite being very challenging, brings more sense of self-realization than any other profession.

For his part, the graduate Dr. Fawzi Salim Zgheir gave a speech in the name of the graduates, in which he said, “Medicine requires more than academic excellence. When providing the necessary care to those who suffer and those who need it, we must be more than just doctors, because we as doctors must be Not only wearing the white coat, we also have to know when to take it off. ”

“We must also listen carefully to our patients, show sympathy for them, meditate on their situations, and take what is necessary, and we must make our patients our absolute priority and stand by them, and we must talk to our patients while they are in the intensive care room connected to the breathing tubes, so they may be able to hear us.” To reassure our patients, but without giving them false hope, we must be compassionate and be as we are meant to be. ”

For his part, Dr. Augustine Choy, Dean of Weill Cornell Medicine – New York said, “The Covid-19 pandemic underscored the crucial importance of the vital roles that doctors and health care professionals play in their community.”

Speaking to the graduates, he said, “You graduate at an important and unprecedented moment in our history. An influential disease has never spread so much in many countries of the world, and we have the technology to monitor its impact, moment by moment. But after this pandemic has passed, you are able to influence Real and lasting in medicine and science, especially here in the Middle East and North Africa. “

He continued, “You are graduates of Weill Cornell Medicine – Qatar, and this feature will always accompany you. In college, you have received the best training from a group of doctors and scientists, and your success is your ally.

Dr. Choi concluded his speech by wishing the graduates all the best in their future lives.

It is noteworthy that the number of graduates from the college since its inception to date has reached 422 graduates working in hospitals in Qatar and around the world. Graduates of this batch will join the medical residency and specialization programs at the finest hospitals in Qatar and the United States of America.

نظمت وايل كورنيل للطب قطر حفل تخريج دفعة 2020 التي تضمّ 38 طبيباً، من بينهم 13 قطرياً، وذلك من خلال البث المباشر عبر شبكة الإنترنت مراعية بذلك التباعد الجسدي الذي فرضه تفشي جائحة فيروس كورونا (كوفيد-19).

وقد تابع ذوو الخرّيجين وأصدقاؤهم وأعضاء هيئة التدريس مراسم الحفل وشاهدوا الأطباء الجدد وهم يتلون قسم أبقراط ويتسلمون شهادة “دكتور في الطب” من الدكتور جاويد شيخ، عميد وايل كورنيل للطب  قطر.

   وقد توجّه الدكتور شيخ بكلمة ثمّن فيها الرؤية الطموحة لصاحبة السمو الشيخة موزا بنت ناصر، رئيس مجلس إدارة مؤسسة قطر للتربية والعلوم وتنمية المجتمع، ولسعادة الشيخة هند بنت حمد آل ثاني نائب رئيس مجلس إدارة مؤسسة قطر والرئيس التنفيذي للمؤسسة.

  ووجه الدكتور شيخ كلامه للخرّيجين قائلاً:” إن مستقبلكم المهني يتطلب منكم الالتزام والانضباط الذاتي لتحقيق الإنجازات، فقد شهد العالم في الآونة الأخيرة أحداثاً أظهرت لنا جميعاً أن مهنة الطب تتطلّب التزاما أكثر من أي مهنة أخرى، وأكدت لنا جميعاً، وبطبيعة الحال لكم أيضاً، حقيقة تعرفونها تمام المعرفة هي أن الأعباء الملقاة على عاتق الأطباء تفوق الممارسين لأي مهنة أخرى، لكن الأطباء لا يتوانون عن تلبية النداء لأنهم يجعلون نصب أعينهم غاية نبيلة ويتفانون بقية حياتهم من أجل تحقيقها.

   وأضاف بأن مهنة الطب رغم كونها منطوية على تحديات بالغة، إلا أنها تجلب الشعور بتحقيق الذات أكثر من أي مهنة أخرى.

  من جانبه ،ألقى الخريج الدكتور فوزي سليم زغير كلمة باسم الخرّيجين، قال فيها “إن الطب يتطلب ما هو أكثر من التفوق أكاديمياً إذ عند تقديم العناية اللازمة لمن يعانون ولمن يحتاجون، يجب أن نكون أكثر من مجرد أطباء بكثير، إذ يتعيّن علينا كأطباء أن نكون معالجين، ولا يقتصر الأمر على ارتداء المعطف الأبيض فحسب، بل يتعيّن علينا أيضاً أن نعرف متى نخلعه”.

وتابع قائلا ” يجب علينا أيضا الإصغاء بتمعّن لمرضانا وإظهار التعاطف معهم والتأمل في حالاتهم واتخاذ ما يلزم، وعلينا أن نجعل مرضانا أولويتنا المطلقة وأن نقف إلى جانبهم، وعلينا أن نتحدث إلى مرضانا وهم في غرفة العناية الحثيثة موصولين بأنابيب التنفس، فربما يتمكنون من سماعنا. علينا أن نُطمئن مرضانا، لكن دون أن نعطيهم أملاً كاذباً، وعلينا أن نكون عطوفين وأن نكون كما يُراد لنا أن نكون”.

   من جانبه قال الدكتور أوغسطين تشوى، عميد وايل كورنيل للطب – نيويورك “إن جائحة كوفيد-19 أبرزت الأهمية البالغة لما يضطلع به الأطباء ومهنيو الرعاية الصحية من أدوار حيوية في مجتمعهم”.

  ووجه كلامه للخريجين قائلا “أنتم تتخرجون في لحظة مهمة وغير مسبوقة في تاريخنا. فلم يسبق أن انتشر مرض مؤثر في الكثير من بلدان العالم بمثل هذا القدر ونحن نملك التقنية اللازمة لرصد تأثيره، لحظة بلحظة. ولكن بعد أن تزول هذه الجائحة، أنتم قادرون على التأثير بشكل حقيقي ودائم في الطب والعلوم خصوصاً هنا في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا”.

   وتابع “أنتم خريجو وايل كورنيل للطب – قطر، وهذه السمة ستلازمكم دائماً. فقد تلقيتم في الكلية أفضل تدريب على يد نخبة من الأطباء والعلماء، والنجاح حليفكم. ، كونوا جريئين ومبتكرين. كونوا طموحين في أفكاركم واستكشفوا آفاقاً مبدعة لتحققوا الأداء الأمثل في مهنة الطب”.

  وختم الدكتور تشوي حديثه متمنيا للخريجين كل التوفيق والسداد في حياتهم المستقبلية.
