Msheireb Properties, the national real estate developer and subsidiary of Qatar Foundation, announced on Wednesday that its tram service in Msheireb Downtown Doha has carried 40,000 riders since it began operations recently.
Msheireb Properties runs three self-powered, high-tech, electric streetcars across the city district.
The three trams are single-deck, rigid body, self-powered vehicles requiring no overhead wires or wayside power systems of any kind.
The traction power is provided by on-board batteries and ancillary power is provided by small on-board generators.
The trams are fully air-conditioned and incorporate special light-filtering glass panels which inhibit over 90% of the heat from sunlight.
The trams are also convertible and can be operated as open-air cars during the cooler winter months by removing the large glass panels.
This feature is unique to the Msheireb Downtown Doha tramway system.
The Tram network is a single 2 km, closed-loop track system that includes nine stops, making it easier for visitors to access all parts of the city district.
The system links all parts of the development within 18 minutes with a 6-minute headway at each station, and offers residents access to Msheireb Station, the largest Doha Metro station that links Qatar Rail’s three Metro lines, the Red, Green and Gold.
Msheireb Properties is a real estate company and a subsidiary of Qatar Foundation.
The company was established as a commercial venture to support the Foundations aims as well as the realization of Qatar National Vision 2030.
Msheireb Properties mission is to change the way people think about urban living and improve their overall quality of life, through innovations that encourage social interaction, respect for culture, and greater care for the environment.
Msheireb Downtown Doha (MDD) is the smartest and most sustainable fully built city district in the world and the first sustainable downtown regeneration project.
The Msheireb Downtown Doha project aims to create a legacy for sustainable urban development in Qatar by reviving the old commercial district of Doha with a new architectural language that is modern yet inspired by traditional Qatari heritage and design.
The entire development is designed to consume fewer resources, generate less waste, lower costs and achieve a reduced carbon footprint.
On completion, MDD will be the world’s largest certified sustainable community with over 100 commercial buildings, 900 residential units accommodating more than 2,600 residents and over 10,255 car parking spaces.
The 310,000 square meter development can host over 60,000 visitors.
All the planned buildings meet the LEED Gold standard for environment performance and some buildings will aim for a Platinum rating.
