Qatar Philharmonic concert to tell stories through music

Doha: After a well applauded season opening concert last week, Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra is back tonight with another exciting show featuring a quartet of symphonic poems by leading composers of the Romantic era.
Under the baton of rapidly emerging young German conductor David Niemann, the Qatar Philharmonic marks the second of the series of rich and diverse offerings lined up for this season with this concert tonight at Qatar National Convention Centre.
Typical of the Romantic composers was the use of music as medium to tell stories and paint pictures which led to the symphonic poem, said to be one of the most inspiring musical inventions of the 19th century. Tonight’s concert is a love letter to the tone poem through a breathtaking selection by renowned composers Bedřich Smetana, Antonín Dvořák, Gioachino Rossini and Richard Strauss.
The show opens with Vltava (The Moldau), the second and the most popular of the six symphonic poems from Smetana’s Má vlast (My Fatherland) in which the pioneering Czech composer provides a vista into Czech Republic’s longest river through the use of tone painting to evoke the sounds of the great river.
Mystery and emotions that words could hardly capture characterizes Dvořák’s The Noon Witch which conjures a horrible demon traditionally used in the prolific orchestral composer’s homeland to scare wayward children.
This will be followed by Rossini’s popular overture to William Tell from the four-act opera which tells the famous story of the Swiss folk hero and marked the last lyrical composition of Rossini.
The concert concludes with Don Juan, a tone poem written by Strauss based on the poem of the same title by Nikolaus Lenau. Extremely difficult to play, the piece is a staple of orchestral audition lists for most instruments.
Second prize winner of the 2015 Malko Conducting Competition, Niemann, who was initially a passionate violinist, is considered one of the most promising conductors of his generation. He will again lead the Philharmonic for its next concert on September 21 featuring compositions by Franz Schubert, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy with Daniel Hrinda on bassoon.
Masterpieces by great composers like Frédéric Chopin, Sergei Prokofiev, Dmitriy Shostakovich, and Johannes Brahms will be among the musical pieces that music lovers can expect in QPO’s next concerts this 2019/2020 season. In addition, there will be a number of special shows including the opening concert for the Qatar France Year of Culture, Films concert, Video Games Live and Arabian Music Festival, among others.

تحيي أوركسترا قطر الفلهارمونية في تمام الساعة السابعة والنصف مساء اليوم بمركز قطر الوطني للمؤتمرات (قاعة 3) حفلا فنيا ساهرا بقيادة الموسيقار الألماني ديفيد نيمان تؤدي فيه أربع مقطوعات هي: “نهر فلتافا” (نهر مولداو) من مجموعة “موطني” للمؤلّف التشيكي بدرجيخ سميتانا (1824 -1884)، و”ساحرة الظهيرة” لمواطنه دفورجاك (1841 – 1904)، و”افتتاحية أوبرا ويليام تل” للمؤلّف الإيطالي جواكينو روسيني (1792 – 1862)، و”دون جوان” للمؤلّف الألماني ريتشارد شتراوس (1864 – 1949).
تعد مقطوعة “نهر فلتافا” القصيدة السيمفونية الأشهر بين القصائد الست في مجموعة “موطني”، وفلتافا هو اسم النهر المتدفق عبر أراضي بوهيميا الريفية (التي تعرف اليوم بجمهورية التشيك) ومدينة براغ، ويعرف النهر أيضا باسمه الألماني “نهر مولداو”. يستخدم سميتانا في مقطوعته أسلوب التصوير الموسيقي الذي يستثير في الأذهان صوت تدفق نهر بوهيميا العظيم؛ إذ تستهل الحركة بنغمات من آلتي فلوت تمثل تموجات المياه المتدفقة عبر رافدين للنهر في مرتفعات بوهيميا سرعان ما يتحدان معًا ليشكلا مجرى نهر مولداو.
أما مقطوعة “ساحرة الظهيرة” فهي القصيدة السيمفونية الثانية بين خمس قصائد ألفها دفوراك في أواخر مسيرته كملحن أوركسترالي، ويرجع زمن تأليف هذه المقطوعات الخمس إلى عام 1896 وتستند جميعها إلى مجموعة الأغاني الفلكلورية القاتمة التي حملت عنوان “إكليل الزهور” للشاعر التشيكي كاريل يارومير إربن.
من جانب آخر، تتألف “افتتاحية أوبرا ويليام تيل” من أربعة فصول، ألّف موسيقاها جواكيو روسيني وكتب نصها كل من إتيان دي جوي وإيبوليت بس معتمدين على مسرحية للكاتب فريدريش فون شيلر تحمل العنوان نفسه. أنتجت هذه الأوبرا في باريس عام 1829، وكانت آخر أعمال روسيني في التأليف الموسيقي الغنائي، وتدور أحداثها في القرن الرابع عشر، وتحكي القصة الشهيرة للبطل الشعبي السويسري الذي استطاع أن يجمع شعب سويسرا للوقوف في وجه النمساويين.
ومقطوعة “دون جوان” القصيدة السيمفونية الثانية لشتراوس عزفت في نوفمبر من عام 1889 بمدينة فايمار، وحققت نجاحاً مذهلاً فتح الباب واسعاً على مسيرة مهنية استثنائية للموسيقار الذي تم تعيينه مساعداً موسيقياً لمهرجان بايرويت في العام نفسه، واستطاع في فترة وجيزة أن يحشد جمهوراً ضخماً لا يعرف انقطاعاً من المعجبين.
