Price, Gayle make history in Doha

DeAnne Price yesterday created history at the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019 becoming the first American athlete to clinch women’s hammer throw gold at the showpiece event.

At a noisy Khalifa International Stadium, Price, who marked a world lead of 78.24 last July, threw 77.54m in the third round to win the title.

“It feels absolutely amazing, having the chance to represent my country, to bring back that gold medal home and to my family,” Price said after winning the title yesterday.

“I can’t be more thankful for this chance and opportunity to be the world champion this year,” she added.

Poland’s Joanna Fiodorow, with her personal best of 76.35m secured silver medal while China’s Zheng Wang won bronze medal with 74.76m.

“This was the best timing to improve the personal record. I managed to improve, got silver my first medal and I cannot ask for more,” said Poland’s Fiodorow.

Gayle becomes first man to win a field title for Jamaica at Worlds

In the men’s long jump final yesterday, Tajay Gayle set a world lead of 8.69 on his way to becoming the first Jamaican man to win a field title at the world championships.

“I didn’t let anything disturb me or distract me, I was focusing on what I was supposed to do, that was the main thing. I am grateful for becoming the first Jamaican man to win a field gold medal,” said Gayle.

USA’s Jeff Henderson had to content with a silver medal after his best mark of 8.39. Cuba’s Juan Miguel Echevarria, who topped the qualifying on the first day, claimed silver medal with 8.34.

“ I am not satisfied but I am somehow happy for Cuba. I have to keep working on those aspects missing today,” said Echevarria.
