ENRAGED iPhone owners are claiming their gizmos are mysteriously slowing down days after Apple announced a pricey new range of smartphones.
Some report their older gadgets are acting up or even stopped working soon after the tech titan announced the iPhone 11 earlier this week – but it’s just a nutty conspiracy theory.
Apple admitted in 2017 that it deliberately released software updates to slow down some iPhones to protect their ageing batteries.
It later fixed the issue with an update and a new battery replacement programme, saying it “never – and would never – do anything to intentionally shorten the life of any Apple product.”
But following the unveiling of three new iPhones on Tuesday, it seems some iPhone users are less than convinced.
“So, of course I’m suspicious that yesterday’s Apple announcement killed my current iPhone. It just stopped working. Awesome,” fumed one paranoid Twitter user.
“The new iPhone was just announced and my phone randomly stopped working,” another wrote.
One tweeter made the dubious claim that Apple slows down its phones with each and every new release.
“Weird how every time Apple release a new iPhone they slow down all of the other phones,” they wrote.
There’s a long-standing debate over whether or not Apple deliberately slows its devices down, a practice known as “planned obsolescence”.
Some claim phone makers deliberately release updates that tank the speed or battery life of older phones in a bid to push people to upgrade.
Apple strongly denies the accusations.
With the release of iOS 13, the latest version of Apple’s mobile software, some iPhone and iPads will become obsolete. They are largely older models that few people still use.
However, it’s extremely unlikely that Apple began deliberately slowing phones down in the wake of its latest launch event.
For one, the firm would have had to release a software update over the past few days in order to alter your gadget.
Apple’s last software update was iOS 12.4.1, which rolled out August 26.
The upcoming iOS 13, due September 19, promises a speed boost that will halve the time it takes for your apps to launch, according to Apple.
The firm says an ageing battery is the most likely reason for your phone being on the blink.
“All rechargeable batteries are consumables and have a limited lifespan – eventually their capacity and performance decline so that they need to be replaced,” Apple says on its website.
“As batteries age, it can contribute to changes in iPhone performance.”
To boost your mobile’s performance, try removing unwanted apps and updating your phone to the latest version of Android or iOS.
As an extreme measure, you could always try replacing the battery.
On iPhone, you now have the option to turn off the feature that throttles your handset in order to boost battery life.
Head to Settings > Battery > Battery Health, then hit “Disable” under Peak Performance Capability.
