AJ+ wins Capital Emmy honour

AJ+ has been honoured with a Capital Emmy in the category of Historic/Cultural – Programme Feature/Segment for its Untold America story, ‘Inside A Deaf School’s Fight For Civil Rights.

The piece takes the audience to Gallaudet University, an institution of higher education for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals that has become the centre of the deaf community in the US. It is part of a larger series titled ‘Deaf in America’, which aims to make visible the lives and stories of members of the US deaf community “in an inclusive and compelling way”, Al Jazeera Media Network has said in a statement.

The series was produced for AJ+’s Untold America, a show that explores underrepresented, forgotten and misunderstood communities in the US.

The Capital Emmy is a regional Emmy, awarded by the National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, in recognition of outstanding achievements in television production. The chapter covers Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC.

“We’re so grateful that the Capital Emmy has recognised this piece that features the deaf community, whose stories don’t often get told. We’re especially proud of this piece because of the lengths we went to make it accessible to a deaf audience,” said Maggie Beidelman, senior producer of Untold America.

Along with Maggie, producers Emily Gibson and Jun Stinson, editor and cameraman Michael Nguyen, animator Marisa Cruz and executive producer Sarah Nasr were part of the team that produced this award-winning story.

This is the second regional Emmy for AJ+’s Untold America show. The first one, in 2018, was awarded in the category of Historic/Cultural-Feature for its piece ‘How Chop Suey Saved San Francisco’s Chinatown’.

The 61st Emmy Awards Gala took place on June 22 in Bethesda, Maryland. The Emmy Award is the premier television production award presented in various sectors of the television industry, including entertainment programming, news and documentary shows, and sports programming. The awards are presented in various area-specific ceremonies held annually throughout the year, honouring excellence in television programming.

تُوجت +AJ بجائزة إيمي الإقليمية في واشنطن، المعروفة بـ “كابيتال إيمي”، عن فئة البرامج التاريخية والثقافية، تقديراً لحلقة من سلسلتها “قصص أمريكا غير المروية”، تتحدث عن كفاح المؤسسات التعليمية للصُّم من أجل الحصول على الحقوق المدنية. وتركز الحلقة على جامعة غالوديت الخاصة بتعليم الصُّم، أو من يعانون من صعوبات في السمع، والتي أصبحت مركزاً لمجتمع الصُّم في الولايات المتحدة.

والحلقة الفائزة جزء من سلسلة بعنوان: “الصُّم في الولايات المتحدة”، تهدف إلى إبراز قصص ويوميات أفراد مجتمع الصُّم بطريقة شاملة وجذابة ضمن برنامج “قصص أمريكا غير المروية” الذي يستكشف المجموعات الأمريكية المنسية وضعيفة التمثيل، والتي يساء فهم قضاياها عادة في المجتمع الأمريكي.

و”كابيتال إيمي” هي إحدى جوائز إيمي التي تقدمها الأكاديمية الوطنية لفنون وعلوم التلفزيون تتويجاً للإنجازات الاستثنائية في الإنتاج التلفزيوني، ويضم فرعها الذي فازت به +AJ ولايات مريلاند وفرجينيا وواشنطن.

وقالت ماغي بايلدمان، المنتجة الأولى في فريق البرنامج الفائز: “نحن سعداء بتكريمنا بجائزة “كابيتال إيمي” عن هذه الحلقة التي تتحدث عن الصُّم الذين لا تحظى قصصهم بالتغطية المناسبة. وفخورون جداً بهذه الحلقة تحديداً بسبب الجهد الذي بذلناه للوصول لمجتمع الصُّم”.

وضم فريق إنتاج الحلقة الفائزة كذلك الصحفيتين إميلي غيبسون، وجون ستينسون، والمصور مايكل انغوين، والرسامة ماريسا كروز، والمنتجة التنفيذية سارة نصر.

وقال معيد أحمد، مدير قناة +AJ الإنجليزية تعليقا على الفوز: “كان رائعاً تتويج +AJ بإحدى جوائز أيمي في العام الماضي، والأكثر روعة هو محافظتنا على تقدمنا ضمن أفضل منتجي محتوى الفيديو بهذا التتويج الجديد.

البقاء على القمة أصعب من الوصول إليها كما يقال. أهنئ كل الزملاء في فريق ‘قصص أمريكا غير المروية’ على هذه الجائزة وعلى التفوق في هذا المجال شديد التنافسية، مع الحفاظ على تغطية القصص المهمة”.

ونُظّم حفل جوائز إيمي الحادي والستين، السبت 22 يونيو الماضي في بيثيسدا بولاية ميريلاند. وتكرم جوائز إيمي المرموقة مختلف فئات العمل التلفزيوني، بما فيها المحتوى الترفيهي والأخباري والبرامج الوثائقية، وبرامج الرياضة. ويتم تقديم هذه الجوائز في فعاليات متخصصة سنوياً.
