Sheikha Moza officially dedicates region’s first museum on media

Doha: HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF), today officially dedicated The Media Majlis at Northwestern University in Qatar, a unique and interactive museum nestled in the heart of one of the largest and most advanced media schools in the world.

The colorful ceremony at the Qatar Foundation partner university was also attended by HE Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al-Thani, Vice Chairperson and CEO of Qatar Foundation, alongside dignitaries, Northwestern administration, and media professionals.

Speaking at the dedication ceremony, HE Sheikha Hind said: “At Qatar Foundation, we continue to be a platform for the expression and exploration of different ideas and perspectives, where people are encouraged to challenge the status quo through knowledge.

“The Media Majlis demonstrates how narratives exist to be explored and challenged rather than simply accepted; and how connecting with different voices, standpoints, and ideas extends the boundaries of our understanding, nourishes critical and original thought, and enriches lives.”

HH Sheikha Moza and HE Sheikha Hind toured the first exhibition, entitled “Arab Identities, images in film,” which provides an exploration of how over a centurys worth of film history has shaped and been shaped by notions of Arab identities.

The Media Majlis is the first museum of its kind in the region and the first university museum in Qatar. It is an active and empowering space where people can engage with the exhibition’s content and programs which focus on communication, journalism, and media in the Arab world; as well as contribute to the global conversation on the continually changing landscape of media.

In his remarks, Dean Everette E. Dennis noted that “The Media Majlis aims to foster public understanding of journalism and communication and their role in shaping public opinion and shaping the image of the Middle East to the rest of the world. It underscores the importance of media in society from the earlier and most basic forms of communication to the most modern and draws on images and materials from local sources and global collections.”

With a focus on the Arab world, the museum will host two exhibitions each year addressing major themes and ideas that are pertinent to the region. The museum features extensive digital-capacity creating exhibitions where visitors can participate through interactive commentary and engagement. Along with digital content shared using a number of different technologies, objects and other physical content feature to explore stories from multiple perspectives.

Speaking on the occasion, Morton Schapiro, president of Northwestern University said: “As a number of people have already pointed out, we wouldn’t be here without the ambition and generosity of Qatar Foundation10 years ago, inspired by the vision of Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser.”

He added, “Who best to tell the story of media and journalism and communications in an Arab context than a museum located here in Northwestern University in Qatar. The Media Majlis demonstrates Northwestern’s commitment to education and research and its long-standing foothold in the Middle East.”

The museum’s first exhibition, Arab Identities, images in film, will continue until June 1 and then reopen in August and run through December. With sections from more than 60 films and hundreds of images, some that date back to the 1880s, and posters from the early 1990s visitors can bring nuance to the deep and complicated meanings of identity, as well as the ideas and connections that influence people’s understanding of that theme.

The director of the museum, Pamela Erskine-Loftus said, “Our ethos at the museum is that there is always another side.’ Our exhibitions, complemented by a series of programs and publications, examine and discuss multiple angles and perspectives to provide audiences with a 360-degree engagement with the subject, leaving them more empowered and knowledgeable to make their own opinion on the subject at hand,” she explained.

The museum’s name draws on the traditional Arab majlis- or gathering place- as a vital source of interpersonal communication, but extends it to modern interactive media, thus connecting values of local culture to universal and global concerns.

Dean Dennis added, “the historic role of communication in the Middle East in the formation of language, images, symbols and early written forms connected to its current and futuristic role in the digital world is not well known, but deserves to be.”

دشّنت صاحبة السمو الشيخة موزا بنت ناصر، رئيس مجلس إدارة مؤسسة قطر للتربية والعلوم وتنمية المجتمع، أمس، متحف «مجلس الإعلام» وهو أول متحف تفاعلي مخصص للإعلام في المنطقة وأول متحف جامعي في قطر، وذلك في جامعة نورثويسترن في قطر. حضر حفل التدشين سعادة الشيخة هند بنت حمد آل ثاني، نائب رئيس مجلس الإدارة الرئيس التنفيذي لمؤسسة قطر، وعدد من مسؤولي المؤسسة والجامعة والعاملين في الحقل الإعلامي.

يستوحي المتحف اسمه من المجلس العربي التقليدي، باعتباره مكاناً للتواصل بين الأشخاص، غير أنه يضيف له بُعداً آخر ممثلاً في الإعلام التفاعلي الحديث، ليربط بذلك قيم الثقافة المحلية بالقضايا العالمية.

وألقت سعادة الشيخة هند بنت حمد آل ثاني كلمة خلال الحفل، أكدت فيها على تواصل دور مؤسسة قطر باعتبارها «منصة للتعبير واستكشاف الأفكار المختلفة ووجهات النظر المتنوعة؛ حيث تحفّز الجميع على مواجهة التحديات الراهنة من خلال المعرفة».

وأضافت سعادة الشيخة هند أن مجلس الإعلام يعكس أهمية التحقق من الأحداث واستكشافها كتحدٍّ، بدلاً من قبولها ببساطة؛ مشيرة إلى ما يجسّده هذا المجلس من أهمية التواصل بين الآراء المختلفة والمواقف المغايرة والأفكار المتنوعة، بما يساهم في توسيع المدارك، وينمي الأفكار العميقة والحس النقدي البناء، ويثري الحياة.

وقامت صاحبة السمو الشيخة موزا بنت ناصر، وسعادة الشيخة هند، بجولة في أول معرض يقام في المتحف تحت عنوان «الهويات العربية: الصور في الأفلام».

وفي ظل تركيزه على العالم العربي، يستضيف المتحف معرضين سنوياً، يتناول فيهما موضوعات وأفكاراً رئيسية ذات صلة بالمنطقة؛ حيث يتمتع المتحف بقدرات رقمية هائلة تمكّن الزائرين من دعم تجربتهم المتحفية من خلال التعليق والتواصل التفاعلي مع محتوياته، وإلى جانب المحتوى الرقمي الذي يعرضه بوسائل تقنية مختلفة، يضم المتحف مقتنيات مادية يعرض من خلالها قصصاً تعكس وجهات نظر متعددة.

ويستمر أول معارض المتحف «الهويات العربية: الصور في الأفلام» حتى الأول من يونيو المقبل، ويعود مجدداً في أغسطس حتى ديسمبر من العام الحالي.

ويستشكف المعرض كيف أثّرت وتأثرت الأفلام على مدار أكثر من قرن بأفكار الهويات العربية، من خلال عرض مشاهد لأكثر من 60 فيلما، إلى جانب مئات الصور التي يرجع بعضها لثمانينيات القرن التاسع عشر وملصقات تعود إلى مطلع تسعينيات القرن الماضي؛ حيث يوضّح من خلال هذه المعروضات المعاني العميقة والمعقدة للهوية، إلى جانب عرض الأفكار التي تؤثّر على فهم الناس لهذا الموضوع.

كما يوفر المتحف لزائريه بيئة مفعمة بالأنشطة والثراء المعرفي، تمكّنهم من التفاعل مع محتوياته وبرامجه التي تركز على وسائل الاتصال والصحافة والإعلام في العالم العربي، كما تساعدهم على المشاركة في النقاش العالمي حول المشهد الإعلامي دائم التغير.

وتعليقاً على تدشين المتحف، أوضح الدكتور إيفيرت دينيس، عميد جامعة نورثويسترن في قطر ورئيسها التنفيذي، أن المتحف الإعلامي بالجامعة يهدف إلى تعزيز الفهم العام بالصحافة والإعلام ووسائل الاتصال وأدوارها في تشكيل الرأي العام وتقديم صورة الشرق الأوسط لدول العالم الأخرى؛ مشيراً إلى دوره في التأكيد على أهمية الإعلام باختلاف مستوياته في المجتمع، بداية من أبسط أشكال الاتصال وأقدمها وحتى أكثرها حداثة وتطوراً.

وأضاف دينيس أن محتويات المتحف تعتمد على صور ومواد تعود أصولها لمصادر محلية ومجموعات عالمية، لافتاً إلى الدور التاريخي الذي لعبته وسائل الاتصال في الشرق الأوسط في تشكيل اللغة والصور والرموز والأشكال المكتوبة القديمة، وأن ارتباط دورها الحالي والمستقبلي في العالم الرقمي ليس معروفاً بشكل جيد ويستحق تسليط الضوء عليه.

من جانبه، أكد الدكتور مورتون شابيرو، رئيس جامعة نورثويسترن، في كلمة ألقاها خلال الحفل، على الدور الرائد لمؤسسة قطر في إلهام الشباب وتعزيز الطموح لديهم، مرجعاً الفضل في ذلك إلى رؤية صاحبة السمو الشيخة موزا بنت ناصر.

وقالت باميلا إرسكين لوفتوس، مديرة المتحف: «هناك دائماً زاوية أخرى للقصة.. هذا هو المعنى الذي نؤمن به في المتحف، وستجسده معارضنا وما يصاحبها من برامج ومطبوعات؛ حيث ستطرح العديد من الزوايا ووجهات النظر للجمهور لتقدم رؤية مكتملة للموضوع تغطي جميع جوانبه، ليخرج الزائر من التجربة أكثر تمكّناً ومعرفة وقدرة على تكوين رأيه حول الموضوع محل النقاش».
