QU and ExxonMobil Research Qatar launch project to study environment of Doha Corniche
«الجامعة» تُطلق الدراسة البيئية لكورنيش الدوحة بالتعاون مع «إكسون موبيل» للأبحاث
Doha: Qatar University’s (QU) Environmental Science Centre (ESC) and ExxonMobil Research Qatar (EMRQ) have signed a cooperation agreement to launch a detailed environmental study project for the Doha Corniche.
This study represents the first attempt to understand the ecosystem and potential pollutants in this region, which is the heart of the city of Doha and is frequented by citizens and residents on a daily basis. T
he Doha Corniche area contains many important marine organisms but intense human activity in the region has led to a gradual deterioration of the quality of life and water. For this reason, the study aims to monitor harmful changes and suggest ways to restore and develop the ecosystem of this vital area. Director of the ESC Prof Hamad Al-Saad Al-Kuwari, at the agreement signing ceremony, stressed the importance of the project and its contribution to improving the environment of the region and restoring marine biodiversity in the area. He said, “This project complements the ongoing efforts of our centre’s researchers, who work to preserve the environmental heritage of the State of Qatar.”
Research Director at ExxonMobil Research Qatar (EMRQ), Dr Mohamad Yacoub Al Sulaiti, also attended the agreement signing ceremony. Speaking on the occasion, he said, “We are honoured to start a new chapter with Qatar University, who we have been working with for over two decades.”
Through this agreement which we signed with the university’s Environmental Science Centre, we aim to carry out comprehensive assessments of the environmental situation in Doha’s Corniche, he said.
“The centre has been a leader in environmental research in the state and we are thrilled to be contributing to these ongoing efforts,” he added.
وقع مركز العلوم البيئية في جامعة قطر اتفاقية تعاون مع إكسون موبيل للأبحاث قطر، وذلك لإطلاق مشروع الدراسة البيئية التفصيلية لكورنيش الدوحة.
وتمثل هذه الدراسة المحاولة الأولى لفهم النظام البيئي والملوثات المحتملة في هذه المنطقة التي تمثل قلب مدينة الدوحة، والتي يرتادها المواطنون والمقيمون بشكل يومي ودوري.
وتحتوي هذه المنطقة البحرية على الكثير من الكائنات البحرية المهمة، وقد أدت النشاطات البشرية الكثيفة في المنطقة؛ إلى تدهورٍ تدريجي لنوعية الحياة والمياه فيه، لذلك تأتي هذه الدراسة لرصد هذه التغيرات واقتراح السبل والطرق العلمية لاستعادة النظام البيئي فيها وتطويرها بما يليق بهذه المنطقة الحيوية.
وأكد الأستاذ الدكتور حمد آل سعد الكواري مدير مركز العلوم البيئية، على الأهمية الحيوية للمشروع ومساهمته في تحسين الواقع البيئي للمنطقة واستعادة التنوع الإحيائي البحري فيها، وقال: «إن هذا المشروع يأتي استكمالاً للجهد البحثي المتواصل الذي يبذله الباحثون في المركز لغرض الحفاظ على الإرث البيئي لدولة قطر».
وقال الدكتور محمد يعقوب السليطي مدير مركز إكسون موبيل للأبحاث قطر: «يشرفنا أن نبدأ مرحلة جديدة في شراكتنا مع جامعة قطر والتي تمتد لعقدين، وذلك من خلال الاتفاقية التي وقعناها مع مركز العلوم البيئية التابع للجامعة، بهدف إجراء تقييمات شاملة للحالة البيئية لكورنيش الدوحة.
