The flames were under control but still not extinguished, French Junior Interior Minister Laurent Nunez told a Tuesday morning news conference, the Reuters news agency reports.

Paris fire chief Jean-Claude Gallet told reporters Monday evening he believed firefighters had managed to save the cathedral’s landmark rectangular towers from the blaze, Reuters said. There was still a risk that some of the interior structures could collapse, he said.

اندلع، أمس الاثنين، حريق كبير في كاتدرائية «نوتردام» التاريخية، وسط العاصمة الفرنسية باريس.

ونقلت شبكة «بي. أف. أم» التليفزيونية الفرنسية (خاصة) عن المتحدث باسم الكاتدرائية (لم تسمه)، إن الحريق «اندلع بسطح الكاتدرائية عند الساعة 18:50 بتوقيت باريس».

كما أشارت الشبكة إلى أنه من المحتمل أن يكون الحريق «مرتبطاً بأعمال التجديد في الكاتدرائية».

من جهتها، طالبت عمدة باريس آن هيدالغو، بإخلاء محيط الكاتدرائية.

وذكرت عبر «تويتر»: «حريق رهيب اندلع في كاتدرائية «نوتردام»، ويحاول رجال الإطفاء السيطرة على النيران».

وأضافت: «نعمل حالياً بشكل وثيق مع أبرشية باريس، وأدعو الجميع إلى احترام الحاجز الأمني (حول الكاتدرائية)».

وحسب تقارير إعلامية، تم إخلاء كاتدرائية «نوتردام» من الزائرين، كما أحاط رجال الإطفاء الكاتدرائية بحاجز أمني واسع.
