QatarDebate promotes art of debate among youth

Doha: For over 10 years, QatarDebate, a member of Qatar Foundation (QF), has been promoting the art of debate in youth and helping shape the global citizens and leaders of the future.
It offers debating championships and training programmes across various schools and universities, locally and internationally.
From March 16 to 20, QatarDebate will host the International Universities Arabic Debating Championship in Qatar, bringing together around 100 teams from different universities in Qatar. It is considered as the largest debating event to be held in the world.
“Young people have a need to express their points of views on various topics. But sometimes they are either afraid to do so, or they do not have the skills to deliver their message. This is where debating comes in,” said Aisha Al Nesf, Head of the Educational Programs at QatarDebate, emphasizes the importance of debate.
“Debating is a skill that aligns with many aspects of public speaking. It requires students to argue for a specific cause or standpoint in front of many people, and these arguments have to be based on evidence-based facts. QatarDebate trains students and helps them foster skills, which include research, developing and communicating arguments on a particular topic, and listening and speaking in front of many people,” she added.
Al Nesf also said that if these skills are nurtured within young people, it can help them in their everyday lives, and enable them to think critically about the world around them.
QatarDebate provides programmes that engage students of all ages and levels of education. Students in primary, middle, and secondary school levels can participate, as well as those from higher education.
“With regard to primary school, we mainly focus on Grade 5 and 6 students, but we also focus on older students, all the way to university level. We provide workshops that foster many skills of debate, such as public speaking, argumentation, and the ability to take a position on a given topic of debate and deliver it in front of an audience,” said Al Nesf.
As for adults, QatarDebate provides training and hands-on experience, through workshops and tournaments, to enable its participants to ultimately become debate judges. And its impact has spread beyond Qatar.
Those who have participated in international debating championships, through QatarDebate, and excelled in the art of debate have been offered specialized workshops, and this has inspired them to establish their own versions of QatarDebate in their home countries.
“We have delegates from many countries, not only in Qatar. Our Elite Academy is a two-year program that brings together participants from different countries to discuss contemporary challenges and relevant issues. Within the Elite Academy, participants learn everything there is to learn about the art of debate,” said Al Nesf.
Buthaina Al Mulla, a student at QF partner university Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar, is among those to have experienced the personal benefit that QatarDebate said that she is “very proud” to have had the opportunity to represent Qatar, at both local and international level. During her debating experience in Germany and Singapore, Al Mulla has met with people from different cultures, and learned about them. And this also gave her the chance to tell people about Qatar’s rich culture and traditions.
“Debating has had a positive and lasting effect on my personal and academic life,” she says. “The workshops offered by QatarDebate helped me organize my thoughts and my writing. In addition, I gained the skills of debating and researching,” she said. In 2015, Abdullah Al Qahtani, a student at Northwestern University in Qatar, also a QF partner university joined QatarDebate. “I enjoy debate a lot, because it has impacted my personal and academic life in a positive way,” he said.
“I would advise all students to participate in QatarDebate, because whether you win or lose, it is an opportunity to learn and to gain experience.”

«مناظرات قطر»: جاهزون لانطلاق بطولة الجامعات
أعلن مركز مناظرات قطر، عضو مؤسسة قطر للتربية والعلوم وتنمية المجتمع، الانتهاء من جميع التحضيرات الخاصة بالبطولة الدولية الخامسة لمناظرات الجامعات باللغة العربية التي سوف تنطلق بعد غد السبت بمركز قطر الوطني للمؤتمرات.
وذكر بيان صحافي صادر عن المركز أن عدد الدول المشاركة في البطولة بلغ 52 دولة من الناطقين باللغة العربية وبغيرها.
وأوضح حسن سليمان، مدير البرامج التعليمية في مركز مناظرات قطر، أن العمل على تنظيم هذه البطولة بدأ مع نهاية البطولة السابقة 2018 بالتواصل مع الفرق التي شاركت فيها، والعمل على زيادة شبكة المركز حول العالم، مشيراً إلى أنه بمجرد الإعلان عن البطولة الدولية 2019 كان الإقبال كبيراً من جميع الدول، وقد وقع الاختيار على 52 دولة، بمشاركة عدد من الجامعات من كل دولة.
منوهاً بفتح باب التسجيل مبكراً للمشاركة في البطولة، تلى ذلك تنظيم أكاديمية التدريب للمدربين الجدد في نوفمبر 2018، بهدف تأهيل وترشيح الفرق المشاركة في هذه البطولة.
وأكد أن المركز أنهى تسجيل الوفود، وترتيبات الإقامة، والمواصلات، وتمَّ إصدار التذاكر والحجوزات بعد تحصيل رسوم التسجيل، والانتهاء من كل الأمور اللوجستية، لافتاً في السياق ذاته إلى البرنامج الترفيهي المتنوع للمشاركين، والذي يشمل المعالم السياحية والتراثية المهمة في دولة قطر.
وقال: «إننا نحرص على إخراج هذا الحدث الضخم بشكل لائق يناسب مكانة الدولة ومؤسسة قطر، وقد وصل عدد الدول إلى 52 دولة، منهم 37 من الناطقين بغيرها، وأضاف: «عقد قبل عدة أيام اجتماع تعريفي للموظفين بهدف توزيع ومعرفة الأدوار، قبل انطلاق البطولة». وألمح سليمان إلى توفير لجنة للشكاوى مهمتها تلقي شكاوى المشاركين في البطولة، ورفعها إلى اللجنة المنظمة ومتابعتها ودراستها إلى أن يتمُّ حلها، مشيراً إلى توفير مرافقين لجميع الوفود منذ لحظة وصولهم إلى الدوحة حتى مغادرتهم جميعاً إلى بلادهم يوم 21 مارس الحالي.
وتقدم بالشكر الجزيل للشريك الإعلامي شبكة الجزيرة الإعلامية، والناقل الرسمي الخطوط الجوية القطرية، على ترتيب الحجوزات للمشاركين، الذين تجاوز عددهم 600 ضيف.
أوضح عبد العزيز الشملان -اختصاصي برامج في المركز ورئيس لجنة المتطوعين- أن عدد المتطوعين لهذا العام في البطولة الدولية وصل إلى 100 متطوع، وقد تم اختيارهم ضمن معايير خاصة بالخبرة السابقة والتفرغ أثناء البطولة، وأغلبهم من طلبة الجامعات، وبعضهم شاركوا في البطولات السابقة، ولهم خبرة في هذا المجال، وتوقع أن هذه البطولة ستكون الأفضل من حيث كفاءة المتطوعين الذين تم توزيعهم مبدئياً على المهام الموكلة إليهم.
وفيما يخص لجان التحكيم، أشار تركي السويدي، منسق البرامج في مركز مناظرات قطر، إلى انتهاء تسجيل الحكام المحليين والدوليين الذي وصل عددهم إلى 200 محكم منهم 75 محكماً دولياً، مبيناً تطوير نظام تسجيل الحكام، وطرق دخولهم وخروجهم من القاعات، والتأكد من وجودهم مع المتناظرين في الوقت والمكان المحددين.
