Qatar Petroleum, ExxonMobil make a significant gas discovery in Cyprus

Based on preliminary interpretation of well data, the discovery could represent an ‘in-place resource’ of approximately 5tn to 8tn cubic feet

Qatar Petroleum and ExxonMobil announced they have made a significant natural gas discovery on the Glaucus-1 prospect, located in Block 10 in the Eastern Mediterranean, approximately 180km south west from Limassol port, offshore Cyprus.

The Glaucus-1 well encountered approximately 133 meters of gas-bearing reservoir. The well was safely drilled to a depth of approximately 4,200 meters in a water depth of 2,063 meters. Based on preliminary interpretation of well data, the discovery could represent an in-place resource of approximately 5tn to 8tn cubic feet. Further analysis will be undertaken over the coming months to better determine this estimate.

Commenting on the discovery, HE the Minister of State for Energy Affairs Saad Sherida al-Kaabi, also President & CEO of Qatar Petroleum said, “We are pleased to announce this discovery in Cyprus, which is the second in Qatar Petroleum’s international exploration portfolio. This achievement is an important milestone in our strategy to expand our international footprint.”

“I would like to congratulate and thank our partner, ExxonMobil, for the outstanding performance that led to this important achievement,” al-Kaabi added.

Glaucus-1 was the second of a two-well drilling programme in Block 10. The first well, Delphyne-1, did not encounter commercial quantities of hydrocarbons.

Block 10 covers an area of 2,572 square kilometers, and is operated by ExxonMobil with a 60% working interest, alongside Qatar Petroleum with a 40% working interest.

أعلنت «قطر للبترول» وشريكتها «إكسون موبيل» عن اكتشاف مهم للغاز الطبيعي في البئر الاستكشافية «جلوكوس- 1» (Glaucus-1) في المنطقة البحرية رقم (10) الواقعة في المياه الإقليمية القبرصية، على بعد 180 كم إلى الجنوب الغربي من ميناء مدينة ليماسول.

تحقق هذا الاكتشاف من خلال البئر «جلوكوس-1» التي تبين احتواؤها على 133 متراً من الطبقات الحاملة للغاز. وقد انتهت عمليات حفر البئر بسلام ووصلت إلى عمق 4200 متر، في مياه يبلغ عمقها 2063 متراً. وبناءً على التحليلات المبدئية لمعطيات البئر فإن حجم الاحتياطي في المكان يمكن أن يتراوح بين 5 و8 تريليونات قدم مكعب من الغاز الطبيعي، وستخضع هذه التقديرات إلى مزيد من التحليل والتدقيق خلال الأشهر المقبلة. وفي تعليقه على هذا النجاح، صرّح سعادة المهندس سعد بن شريده الكعبي، وزير الدولة لشؤون الطاقة العضو المنتدب والرئيس التنفيذي

لـ «قطر للبترول»، قائلاً: «نحن سعداء جداً بهذا الاكتشاف، وهو الثاني من نوعه الذي نعلن عن تحقيقه خلال هذا الشهر في المشاريع الدولية لـ (قطر للبترول). إن هذا الإنجاز يعدّ علامة بارزة على طريق تنفيذ استراتيجية (قطر للبترول) للنمو وتوسيع تواجدها العالمي».

وأضاف سعادته: «أود بهذه المناسبة أن أهنئ شريكتنا (إكسون موبيل)، وأشكرها على الأداء المتميز الذي أدى إلى هذا الاكتشاف المهم».

وتعتبر بئر «جلوكوس- 1» (Glaucus-1) ثاني بئر يتم حفرها في المنطقة الاستكشافية رقم (10)، بعد أن تمّ حفر البئر الأولى «دلفين- 1» والتي لم يتم اكتشاف الغاز بكميات اقتصادية فيها.

وتبلغ مساحة هذه المنطقة الاستكشافية 2572 كيلومتراً مربعاً، وتتولى فيها عمليات الاستكشاف شركة «إكسون موبيل» الأميركية التي تشارك في المشروع بحصة 60 % إلى جانب «قطر للبترول» بحصة 40 %.
