Qatar Foundation’s iSTEMed Camp to find how educators can empower pupils
معهد التطوير التربوي يستضيف مخيم «iSTEMed»
The Education Development Institute (EDI), part of Qatar Foundation’s (QF) Pre-University Education (PUE), recently hosted its annual iSTEMed Camp at Awsaj Academy in Education City. The 2019 edition of the event, was held under the theme, ‘STEM in Action,’ and was sponsored by ExxonMobil Qatar.
The aim of iSTEMed is to explore how educators can empower students to solve real-world problems through the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). It was at-tended by educators, school leaders, and students from across academic institutes in Qatar and beyond.
Mehdi Benchaabane, Director of EDI, PUE, QF, said, “This event brought together individuals from within the field of education to discuss and exchange ideas about innovative approaches to teaching, with the ultimate aim of enabling interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary learning. “The iSTEMed Camp has once again proven to be a unique initiative that bridges professional learning and students’ learning through an interactive and authentic platform.”
The keynote speech, presented during the opening ceremony, was delivered by Maryam Alhajri, Director of Academyati, PUE’s newest school and focused on why it is important to offer a STEM education to all learners and build equitable systems that promote it in all schools. As a computer scientist and a master learner who has taken on the task of being the first leader of a progressive school in Qatar, Alhajri draws on her personal experience as a learner and as a mother to understand how authentic learning occurs.
EDI also welcomed progressive educator, maker, and founder of Genesis Learning, Trevor Shaw, who engaged participants in a deep-dive into the engineering design process and ex-plored strategies for managing student-centered engineering challenges, while Kantis Sim-mons, a former NASA scientist, shared his insights about nurturing students to become effective problem-solvers through STEM education.
The three-day event included more than 60 presenters and over 50 sessions for Early Years-Grade 12 educators in both Arabic and English. Participants connected through workshops, presentations, Ignite Talks, and campfire chats.
أقام معهد التطوير التربوي، وهو جزء من التعليم ما قبل الجامعي في مؤسسة قطر، مخيم «iSTEMed» للعام 2019، في أكاديمية العوسج في الفترة من 21 وحتى 23 مارس، تحت شعار «تفعيل STEM»، وبرعاية شركة إكسون موبيل.
هدف المخيّم إلى استكشاف كيف يمكن للمعلمين تمكين الطلاب من حل مشكلات العالم الحقيقي، من خلال مواضيع العلوم، والتكنولوجيا، والهندسة، والرياضيات، وشارك في المخيم معلمون، وقادة، وطلاب من مختلف المدارس والجامعات داخل دولة قطر وخارجها.
وقال مهدي بن شعبان مدير معهد التطوير التربوي التابع للتعليم ما قبل الجامعي في مؤسسة قطر إن: «هذا الحدث قد جمع المعلمين وقادة المدارس الذين تبادلوا الأفكار حول الأساليب المبتكرة للتعليم والتعلم التي تُمكِّنهم من تعزيز الابتكار في المواد الدراسية». وأضاف:» لقد أثبت هذا الحدث مرة أخرى أنه مبادرة فريدة من نوعها تعد جسراً بين التعلم المهني وتعلم الطلاب في منصة تفاعلية وأصيلة».
ألقت الكلمة الافتتاحية، السيدة مريم الهاجري، مديرة مدرسة أكاديميّتي، ركزت خلالها على أهمية تقديم التعليم عن طريق العلوم والتكنولوجيا والابتكار لجميع المتعلمين وبناء أنظمة منصفة تعزز ذلك في جميع المدارس.
وبصفتها خبيرة حاسوب من خلال التدريب والتمرّس في التعلّم، تولت مهمة أول قائد لمدرسة تقدمية في دولة قطر، كما شاركت السيدة مريم الحضور تجربتها الشخصية للاستفادة منها كمعلمة وكأم، لفهم كيفية تطبيق التعلم الأصيل.
كما رحب معهد التطوير التربوي بالسيد تريفور شو، المعلم التطوري وصانع ومؤسس ورئيس التعليم التكويني الأصولي، والذي شارك الحضور عن كثب في عملية التصميم الهندسي واستكشاف استراتيجيات لإدارة التحديات الهندسية المتمحورة حول الطالب.
ومن جانبه، قال السيد صالح بن سعد المانع، نائب الرئيس ومدير الشؤون الحكومية والعامة في «إكسون موبيل» قطر: «نتعاون مع التعليم ما قبل الجامعي في مؤسسة قطر منذ عام 2015، ويسرنا أن ندعم مجددًا مبادرة أخرى من مبادراته المهمة».
وأضاف: «يعتبر «iSTEM» فعالية مهمة سعينا للمشاركة فيها، لأنها تناقش قضايا تمثل أهمية جوهرية في برامج التواصل المجتمعي في إكسون موبيل قطر. حيث تتركز جهودنا على البرامج التي تعزز من تجربة التعلم للطلاب، والتي تنمي مهاراتهم المرتبطة بالعلوم والتكنولوجيا والهندسة والرياضيات، والتي سوف تساهم في إعداد الطلاب للمستقبل».
