Japan will not host the Olympics after 2021

Tokyo 2020 president Yoshiro Mori said that the Olympic Games, already postponed to 2021, would be “scrapped” if they could not take place then, according to an interview published on Tuesday.

The International Olympic Committee and the Japanese government last month postponed the Games until July 2021 because of the impact of the coronavirus outbreak.

With the epidemic’s worldwide infection rate climbing and experts suggesting a vaccine is still a long way off, questions are being asked about whether the huge setpiece event might need to be delayed further.

“No. In that case, the Olympics will be scrapped,” Mori said in the interview with Japanese sports daily Nikkan Sports, when asked if the Games could be postponed again until 2022.

However the former prime minister remained confident the they would go ahead in 2021.

“We have delayed the Olympics until next summer after we will have won the battle,” he was quoted as saying.

“The Olympics would be much more valuable than any Olympics in the past if we could go ahead with it after winning this battle. We have to believe this otherwise our hard work and efforts will not be rewarded.”

Asked about Mori’s comments, Tokyo 2020 spokesman Masa Takaya emphasised organisers were focusing on next year.

“New dates for the Tokyo 2020 Games have been set and our mission is to deliver the Games next year,” he told a news briefing.

Mori “mentioned this comment in his own thoughts,” Takaya added.

During the interview, Mori also suggested the Olympics and Paralympics might share opening and closing ceremonies instead of holding their usual separate ones.

Mori said this would cut costs, though the idea is further complicated by tickets already being sold for all four ceremonies.

“It’s a big hurdle,” he admitted. “(But) … due to the impact of coronavirus, the situation next year will be completely different…, Given that the situation has dramatically changed, we have to review key areas, including the ceremonies.”

There have been more 3 documented coronavirus cases globally, with more than 210,000 deaths, and the World Health Organization (WHO) warned on Monday that the pandemic was “far from over”.

نقلت صحيفة يابانية عن يوشيرو موري رئيس أولمبياد طوكيو 2020 قوله إن اليابان ستلغي استضافة الألعاب إذا لم تتمكن من إقامتها في 2021 بعد أن تأجلت بالفعل لمدة عام واحد.

واتفقت اللجنة الأولمبية الدولية مع الحكومة اليابانية الشهر الماضي على تأجيل الأولمبياد حتى يوليو 2021 بسبب جائحة فيروس كورونا حيث قتل الآلاف حول العالم.

لكن مع تزايد أعداد المصابين والوفيات حول العالم، وتوقع خبراء بالحاجة لوقت طويل قبل إنتاج لقاح لهذا الفيروس المستجد، زادت التساؤلات حول إمكانية الحاجة للمزيد من التأجيل.

وردا على سؤال حول إمكانية استضافة طوكيو للأولمبياد إذا تأجلت حتى 2022، قال موري في مقابلة مع صحيفة نيكان اليابانية الرياضة “لا، ففي هذه الحالة سيتم إلغاء الأولمبياد”.

لكن رئيس الوزراء السابق لا يزال يشعر بالثقة بشأن إمكانية إقامة الأولمبياد في 2021.

ونقلت الصحيفة عن موري قوله “لقد قررنا تأجيل الأولمبياد حتى الصيف المقبل بعد أن نكون قد فزنا بالمعركة.

“ستكون الأولمبياد أكثر قيمة من أي ألعاب سابقة إذا نجحنا في إقامتها بعد الفوز بهذه المعركة. يجب أن نثق في ذلك وإلا لن نحصد ثمار جهودنا الكبيرة وعملنا الجاد”.

وتعرض ماسا تاكايا المتحدث باسم أولمبياد طوكيو 2020 لسؤال عن تعليقات موري لكنه أكد أن تركيز المنظمين ينصب على العام المقبل.

وقال تاكايا في إفادة صحفية “تحددت بالفعل المواعيد الجديدة لألعاب طوكيو 2020 ومهمتنا استضافة الألعاب العام المقبل”.

وأضاف أن موري “أدلى بهذه التعليقات بناء على رأيه الشخصي”.

وخلال المقابلة الصحفية، اقترح موري تقاسم الألعاب الأولمبية والألعاب الأولمبية لذوي الاحتياجات الخاصة لحفلي الافتتاح والختام بدلا من الشكل المعتاد بإقامة حفلين لكل ألعاب.

وقال موري إن هذا الأمر سيقلص التكاليف رغم أن الفكرة تبقى معقدة بعدما باعت طوكيو بالفعل تذاكر لأربع حفلات.

وأكد تاكايا أنه تم طرح هذا الأمر لكن لا توجد خطط متكاملة بعد.

وأضاف “بسبب تأثير فيروس كورونا فإن الموقف سيكون مختلفا تماما العام المقبل. يجب إعادة النظر في بعض الأمور المهمة ومنها الحفلات”.

ولا تزال اللجنة المنظمة للأولمبياد واللجنة الأولمبية الدولية يناقشان تكاليف تأجيل الألعاب.

وبلغت ميزانية الأولمبياد 12.6 مليار دولار قبل التأجيل، بينما ذكرت تقارير إعلامية يابانية أن إقامة الألعاب في 2021 ربما يتسبب في زيادة التكاليف بمبلغ 300 مليار ين (2.8 مليار دولار).
