Concrete works completed at Qatar 2022 Stadium in Al Thumama

Doha: Construction of Al Thumama Stadium, a host venue for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, continues to progress rapidly with the stadium concrete works now completed.

The team building the venue, proposed to host games up to and including the quarter-final stage, is installing the steel and cables in preparation for the operation known as the ‘big lift’ of the roof structure.

Al Thumama Stadium Project Manager, Saoud Al Ansari, said: “The roof columns and compression ring serve as an integral part for the roof’s structure. Successfully installing these items means we are a step closer to the big lift, which is considered the main event in stadium construction.”

He continued: “The big lift requires the use of 80 hydraulic jacks and 10 hydraulic pumps installed around the compression ring to carefully lift an intricate 727-ton cable net system into place. This laborious procedure is expected to take approximately seven to 14 days.”

More than 50,000 cubic meters of concrete have been cast at the site, while 2,285 tons of steel have been installed and approximately 38,400 square meters of masonry works have been completed.

Materials to build Al Thumama Stadium are brought from many providers from different countries including USA, Spain, Japan, South Korea, Luxemburg, Turkey, Germany and Switzerland.

The design of the 40,000-seat stadium is inspired by the ‘gahfiya’ headpiece worn by men in Qatar and across the MENA region. It is the first venue to be designed solely by a Qatari architect, Ibrahim Mohammed Jaidah.

After Qatar 2022, Al Thumama Stadium’s seating capacity will be reduced from 40,000 to 20,000. The 20,000 seats removed from the stadium will be donated to countries in need of sporting infrastructure.

It is envisaged the stadium will be transformed into a ‘sport city’ complemented by other mixed use developments, such as a hotel and a sports clinic.

Given its potential location as a major component of the south region, the precinct will provide a long-term focus on sport, leisure, community, housing and cultural uses.

Cooling technology was also devised in the design of the stadium where 2,500 construction workers are currently employed. Another design target is to decrease the carbon footprint of the structure in the long term, which is targeting a four-star Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) certification for both design and construction.

Main contractor works at Al Thumama Stadium are scheduled for completion by 2020.

تتسارع في الوقت الراهن وتيرة العمل في استاد الثمامة الذي سيستضيف مباريات بطولة كأس العالم لكرة القدم قطر 2022 حتى الدور ربع النهائي، حيث اكتملت الأعمال الخرسانية في الاستاد، ويواصل فريق عمل المشروع تركيب الأجزاء المعدنية والكابلات الضخمة استعدادا لعملية الرفع الكبرى لهيكل سقف الملعب، التي تعتبر من أهم العمليات الرئيسية في بناء هذا الاستاد.

وفي تصريح له حول هذا الإنجاز، أوضح المهندس سعود الأنصاري، مدير مشروع استاد الثمامة، بأن أعمدة السقف والحلقة المعدنية الضخمة تعد مكونا أساسيا في هيكل سقف الاستاد.. مشيرا إلى أن نجاح أعمال تركيب هذه الأجزاء يمثل خطوة هامة في عملية رفع سقف الاستاد، والتي تعتبر إحدى العمليات الرئيسية في بنائه.

وأضاف الأنصاري: “تتطلب عملية الرفع استخدام 80 رافعة هيدروليكية و10 مضخات هيدروليكية حول الحلقة المعدنية الضخمة لرفع شبكة من الكابلات المعدنية يصل وزنها إلى 727 طنا قبل تثبيتها في مكانها. ومن المتوقع أن يستغرق تنفيذ هذه المهمة 7 إلى 14 يوما تقريبا”.

وقد شهد العمل في موقع استاد الثمامة صب أكثر من 50 ألف متر مكعب من الخرسانة، إضافة إلى تركيب ما يزيد عن 2285 طنا من الصلب، وتنفيذ أكثر من 38 ألفا و400 متر مربع من أعمال طابوق جدران الاستاد الذي يسهم في إنشائه 2500 عامل، ويتم استيراد المواد المستخدمة في بناء الاستاد من دول عديدة منها الولايات المتحدة، وإسبانيا، واليابان، وكوريا الجنوبية، ولوكسمبورغ، وتركيا، وألمانيا، وسويسرا.

يشار إلى أن استاد الثمامة، الذي صممه المهندس المعماري القطري إبراهيم محمد الجيدة والبالغة سعته 40 ألف مقعد، سيستضيف مباريات بطولة قطر 2022 حتى الدور ربع النهائي.. وقد استوحى الاستاد، الذي يبعد 12 كيلومترا جنوبي قلب مدينة الدوحة، تصميمه من شكل القحفية، وهي القبعة التقليدية التي يرتديها الرجال في جميع أنحاء الوطن العربي، مجسدا بذلك الثقافة القطرية وتاريخ منطقتنا العربية العريق.

ومن المقرر خفض الطاقة الاستيعابية للاستاد عقب انتهاء البطولة إلى 20 ألف مقعد، حيث سيجري تفكيك نصف مقاعد الاستاد والتبرع بها لبلدان ومشاريع تفتقر لبنية تحتية رياضية، وبعد إسدال الستار على البطولة، سيتحول الاستاد، نظرا لموقعه الجغرافي المميز جنوبي البلاد، إلى مدينة رياضية تضم فندقا، وعيادة للطب الرياضي، ومرافق ترفيهية، ومجتمعية، وسكنية، وثقافية، ستعود بالنفع على المنطقة المجاورة، ويجسد ذلك أحد ملامح الإرث الذي تتطلع بطولة قطر لتركه لأجيال بعد انتهاء البطولة.
