Sheikha Moza attends debut session of Doha Debates new season
صاحبة السمو تشهد أول حدث مباشر على الهواء لـ «مناظرات الدوحة»
Doha: The relaunched Doha Debates, a Qatar Foundation (QF) production, held its first live debate on the world’s urgent and worsening refugee crisis in the presence of H H Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of QF, yesterday.
H E Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani, Vice-Chairperson and CEO of QF, was also present at the debut of the new Doha Debates series held at the Northwestern University in Qatar (NU-Q).
The debate on ‘Global Refugee Crisis: worsening conditions, real solutions,’ examined how best to solve the global refugee crisis, which has led to more than 25 million people being forcibly displaced across borders.
Marc Lamont Hill, a US professor of Media, Cities and Solutions at Temple University, and an activist and award-winning journalist, Douglas Murray, a British author, award winning journalist and political commentator and Muzoon Almellehan, a Syrian refugee, education activist and the youngest-ever Unicef Goodwill Ambassador presented their view and opinion on global refugee crisis.
The debate moderator Ghida Fakhry challenged participants to focus on solutions to the refugee crisis, while the debate’s digital host, Nelufar Hedayat, highlighted ideas from the international audience participating via Twitter. The Doha based audience then voted on the most effective solution to the global refugee crisis, choosing ‘Resist power. Push back as proposed by debate participant Lamont Hill.
Lamont Hill said, “We can acknowledge the moment and that we have borders — we can’t pretend we don’t. But we also can’t obsess about this. We can reimagine ourselves as a global community rather than a local community.” Almellehan, spoke of the importance of education in giving refugees hope. “Many of us think of refugees as numbers, but behind every number, there is a story.” Why judge people at a time when they need hope, believe in a better life, and want to build a future for themselves and their children?” she said.
Murray highlighted ‘competing virtues’ in the context of migration. “The first virtue is mercy, the desire to be merciful to fellow humans who are suffering. And the second is justice — not just for those who are fleeing countries, but for those in the countries they are fleeing to,” he said.
Sanam Naraghi Anderlini was the debate’s bridge-building ‘connector.’ She combined elements of each opinion to create an unorthodox, challenging response that de-constructs arguments and examines their consequences. Anderlini is the founder and executive director of International Civil Society Action Network, which works to prevent violent extremism by promoting peace, rights and pluralism worldwide.

Doha Debates’ new concept builds on the tradition of examining complex global issues established by its original launch 14 years ago, through live debates, digital videos, a TV series, and blogs and podcasts on the world’s most pressing challenges. This innovative approach includes majlis-style discussions designed to bridge differences, build consensus and identify solutions to urgent global issues.
The next live Doha Debates event is set to take place on April 3 at NU-Q, with a debate on the merits and challenges of Artificial Intelligence.

شهدت صاحبة السمو الشيخة موزا بنت ناصر رئيس مجلس إدارة مؤسسة قطر، مساء أمس، أول حوار مباشر على الهواء لمناظرات الدوحة، التي انطلقت بنسختها الجديدة مؤخراً، وذلك بمشاركة شريحة واسعة من المعنيين في قطر والعالم، الذين تبادلوا النقاش حول المقترحات الرامية إلى معالجة أزمة اللاجئين الملحة والمتفاقمة في العالم.
حضرت سعادة الشيخة هند بنت حمد آل ثاني نائب رئيس مجلس الإدارة والرئيس التنفيذي للمؤسسة، الحوار الذي استضافته جامعة نورثويسترن في قطر، إحدى جامعات المدينة التعليمية الشريكة.
وقد شارك في الفعالية نخبة من المتناظرين، الذين ينتمون إلى مجتمعات مختلفة، ومن بينهم إحدى اللاجئات السوريات الشابات والناشطات في المجال التعليمي، بالإضافة إلى صحافيين وإعلاميين من الولايات المتحدة الأميركية، والمملكة المتحدة، والحاصلين على جوائز مرموقة، كما انضمت إلى النقاش إحدى الخبيرات في مجال الوساطة وهي من أصل إيراني، بالإضافة إلى متخصصة لبنانية في إدارة الحوار، ولاجئة أفغانية كضيفة رقمية للمناظرة، إلى جانب عدد كبير من الجمهور، شمل طلاب جامعات المدينة التعليمية، ومتابعين على الهواء مباشرة من موقع «تويتر» في جميع أنحاء العالم.
وقد دعت غيدا فخري -مديرة الجلسة- الجمهور، للتركيز على إيجاد حلول لأزمة اللاجئين العالمية، بينما سلّطت نيلوفار هيدايات -المراسلة في المناظرة- الضوء على أفكار ووجهات نظر المشاهدين في الخارج، الذين شاركوا الحوار عبر بثّ مباشر على موقع «تويتر»، فيما صوّت الجمهور في الدوحة على الحلّ الأكثر فاعلية لأزمة اللاجئين العالمية، وهو «التصدي للقوة.. والصمود بوجهها»، والذي اقترحه المشارك في الحوار، الأستاذ والصحافي مارك لامونت هيل.
بدورها، قالت المتحدثة في المناظرة مزون المليحان -وهي لاجئة سورية عمرها 20 عاماً، وناشطة في المجال التعليمي- والتي تحدثت عن أهمية التعليم في منح الأمل للاجئين: «العديد منّا ينظر إلى اللاجئين على أنهم عدد، وفي الحقيقة أنه وراء كلّ عدد قصة». وأضافت: «لماذا يتم الحكم على الناس عندما يكونون بحاجة إلى الأمل، وعندما يؤمنون بأنهم يستحقون حياة أفضل، وبناء مستقبل لهم ولأطفالهم؟».
من جهته، سلّط دوغلاس موري -معلق سياسي بريطاني- الضوء على التنافس بين القيم في سياق الهجرة الموازية قائلًا: «القيمة الأساسية هي الرحمة، وأهمية الرجوع إلى الرحمة في التعامل مع البشر الذين يعانون، أما القيمة الثانية فهي العدالة، ليس فقط بالنسبة للبلدان التي يهاجر منها اللاجئون، وإنما أيضاً البلدان التي تشكّل وجهة لهم».
ومن جانبه، قال مارك لامونت هيل -أستاذ وناشط وصحافي-: «لا يمكننا إنكار مسألة وجود الحدود، ولا يمكننا التظاهر بأننا لا ندرك هذه المسألة، ولكننا أيضاً يجب ألّا تشكّل هذه المسألة هاجساً لنا، بل بإمكاننا التخيّل أننا نعيش في مجتمع عالمي بدلاً من مجتمعات محلية».
أما سانام ناراجي-أندرليني، التي قامت بدور موصلة الحوار لتقريب وجهات النظر خلال النقاش، وهي المؤسس والمدير التنفيذي لشبكة العمل الدولية للمجتمع المدني، قالت: «إن مسألة اللاجئين ليست سهلة على الإطلاق، ولكن مناقشتها مسألة ضرورية، فكل يوم هناك أطفال خارج المدارس، وليس بمقدورهم أن يطلقوا قدراتهم أو إمكانياتهم».
وقال أمجد عطاالله، المدير الإداري لمناظرات الدوحة، في هذه المناسبة: «إن المستوى المتقدّم للنقاش في مناظرات الدوحة يكرّس معايير عالية الجودة للحوار الهادف حول القضايا المعقدة والصعبة»، وأضاف: «لقد جسّد الضيوف والمشاركون اليوم سواء من الدوحة أو عبر الإنترنت جزءاً رئيسياً من مناظرة مهمة تطرح قضية اللاجئين العالمية وتبحث عن حلول ناجعة لها».
