Al Baker stresses need for global repositioning of Africa’s aviation sector

Doha: Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, Akbar Al Baker, highlighted the need for a global repositioning of Africa’s aviation industry as well as the changing political approach to aviation in the region at the Aviation Africa Summit & Exhibition, taking place from February 27-28, in Kigali, Rwanda.
Speaking to an audience that included the President of the Republic of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, as well as senior government ministers, aviation industry executives and guests of honour, Al Baker addressed the need for liberalisation of aviation regulations in Africa to bring improved connectivity to travellers, as well as significant benefits in trade, tourism and employment. Al Baker noted that although Africa makes up 16 percent of the world’s population, it only captures approximately 3.1 per cent of the world’s air travellers.
Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, Akbar Al Baker, said: “Now is the time to reconsider how Africa’s aviation market is positioned in order to maximise its full potential. Governments should leave behind protectionist approaches to regulating aviation and embrace liberalisation, because when such policies are adopted, countries benefit from improved connectivity and a positive impact on trade, tourism and employment.
“Qatar Airways’ vision is about freedom, collaboration and long-term sustainable investments in African infrastructure, human capital, and capacity-building. We strongly believe in Africa’s aviation potential, and we are ready to offer a solid and long-term partnership.”
The two-day Aviation Africa Summit & Exhibition brings together senior airline executives, Civil Aviation Authority members and key aviation leaders to discuss the challenges facing the aviation industry in Africa and the future development plans for the market.
Qatar Airways operates a Boeing B787 Dreamliner to Kigali, which features 22 Business Class seats and 232 seats in Economy Class. The aircraft offers a smooth flying experience and a spacious cabin, enabling passengers to rest and arrive at their destination feeling refreshed. The airline operates a daily flight between Doha and Kigali via Entebbe, with the return flight from Kigali to Doha non-stop.
In December 2018, Qatar Airways became the only Gulf airline to provide direct flights to Mombasa, Kenya, the airline’s second gateway into the country. The launch of this new service is part of the airline’s continued expansion plans in Africa, and a demonstration of its ongoing commitment to the region. Qatar Airways now serves 21 destinations in 15 African countries; in addition, Qatar Airways Cargo provides freighter services to seven countries.

وخلال كلمته التي ألقاها أمام الحضور الذي تضمن فخامة الرئيس بول كاغامي رئيس جمهورية رواندا والعديد من الوزراء والرؤساء التنفيذيين من قطاع الطيران وضيوف الشرف؛ شدَّد سعادة السيد الباكر على أهمية تحرير قوانين الطيران في إفريقيا بهدف إتاحة خيارات سفر أكثر للمسافرين وتعزيز قطاعات التجارة والسياحة والتوظيف. وأشار سعادة السيد الباكر إلى أنه وبالرغم من أن إفريقيا تشكل 16% من تعداد السكان في العالم، إلا أنها تشكّل ما يقارب 3.1% فقط من مجموع المسافرين جواً في العالم.
دراسة الوضع
وقال سعادة السيد أكبر الباكر، الرئيس التنفيذي لمجموعة الخطوط الجوية القطرية: «لقد حان الوقت لإعادة دراسة الوضع الحالي لسوق الطيران الإفريقي من حيث تعزيز قدرات وعمليات هذا السوق. ويتعين على الحكومات العمل على تحرير قطاع الطيران من جميع القيود المفروضة بهدف الاستفادة من الأثر الإيجابي لهذه الخطوة على قطاعات التجارة والسياحة والتوظيف».
جهوزية
وأضاف سعادة السيد الباكر: «ترتكز رؤية الخطوط الجوية القطرية على الحرية والتعاون والاستثمارات طويلة الأمد في البنية التحتية ورأس المال البشري وبناء القدرات في إفريقيا. وأود أن أؤكد على أهمية الفرص المتاحة في سوق الطيران الإفريقي وجهوزيتنا لإبرام اتفاقية ناجحة وطويلة الأمد».
وتسيّر «القطرية» طائرة من طراز بوينغ 787 دريملاينر على الرحلات اليومية إلى كيغالي عبر انتيبي في رحلة الذهاب ومباشرة إلى الدوحة في رحلة العودة، حيث تضم هذه الطائرة 22 مقعداً على درجة رجال الأعمال و232 مقعداً على الدرجة السياحية. وتوفّر هذه الطائرة تجربة سفر مميزة ومقصورات واسعة لتمكن المسافرين على متنها من الاسترخاء والوصول إلى وجهتهم وهم بأفضل حالة.
وأصبحت «القطرية» في شهر ديسمبر لعام 2018 شركة الطيران الشرق الأوسطية الوحيدة التي تسيّر رحلات مباشرة إلى مومباسا في كينيا، ثاني وجهات الناقلة في كينيا.
