Sheikha Hind attends US discussion on education, women’s rights and the blockade

H E Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani, Vice-Chairperson and CEO of Qatar Foundation (QF), has participated in the latest ‘Off The Record’ discussion in New York City, US.

The talk, titled ‘A Discussion of Education, Women’s Rights and the Blockade’, was moderated by journalist Magalie Laguerre-Wilkinson from US news program ‘60 Minutes’.

Speaking about her participation in the event, Sheikha Hind said: “This discussion has provided a valuable opportunity to outline and promote the vision and mission of Qatar Foundation to the world, on an impactful international platform that focuses on addressing global and international challenges in education and other areas through collaboration.

“Innovation in education is one of the key elements of QF’s mission. Our participation in this event has illustrated how we are an exemplar of high-quality education provision, and how we have created a multidisciplinary, cross-cultural educational and research environment.

“This environment is built on equality of opportunity, and equipping young people with the skills that enable them to address national and global challenges and make a positive impact on the world.”

QF’s commitment to empowering women in education is reflected by the fact that the number of female students enrolled in engineering courses at Texas A&M University at Qatar, a QF partner university, has reached an all-time high of almost 50 percent in the current academic year, while overall female enrolment at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar – also a QF partner university – stands at 63 per cent. Across QF, 40 percent of the organization’s leadership is female.

Sheikha Hind’s participation in the ‘Off The Record’ event formed part of a four-day visit to the US, which concluded on January 11.

As part of the trip, she met with senior officials from the home campuses of QF’s international partner universities, as well as influential thought leaders, innovative think tanks, and leading policy-makers in education and research, and toured Weill Cornell Medicine, part of Cornell University, to meet students and learn more about its innovative research initiatives.

شاركت سعادة الشيخة هند بنت حمد آل ثاني نائب رئيس مجلس الإدارة والرئيس التنفيذي لمؤسسة قطر، في جلسة نقاشية انعقدت مؤخراً تحت عنوان «التعليم، حقوق المرأة، والحصار»، في مدينة نيويورك بالولايات المتحدة الأميركية، وذلك ضمن المنتدى الدولي المعروف بـ «ليس للنشر»، وقد أدارت الجلسة النقاشية الصحافية ماغالي لاجير ويلكنسون، من البرنامج الإخباري الأميركي «60 دقيقة».

تعليقاً على مشاركتها، قالت سعادة الشيخة هند: «تُعدّ المشاركة في نقاشات «ليس للنشر» فرصة مهمة لتعزيز رؤية مؤسسة قطر، ونشر رسالتها على المستوى الدولي، وذلك من خلال هذه المنصة العالمية والمؤثرة، التي تناقش التحديات العالمية، خصوصاً تلك التي تتطلب تضافر الجهود في مختلف المجالات، وأهمها التعليم».

وأضافت سعادة الشيخة هند: «وإذ يُعتبر الابتكار في التعليم من الركائز الرئيسية لرسالتنا، فقد تمكنّا من خلال مشاركتنا اليوم من إظهار النموذج الرائد الذي تنتهجه مؤسسة قطر في توفير تعليم عالي الجودة، وبيئة تعليمية وبحثية نموذجية متعددة التخصصات، وعابرة للثقافات، تقوم على تكافؤ الفرص وتزويد أفراد المجتمع بالمهارات المتقدمة، بما يُمكّنهم من مواجهة التحديات الوطنية والعالمية، وإحداث التأثير الإيجابي المنشود في هذا العالم».

في سياق التزام مؤسسة قطر بتكافؤ الفرص، وتمكين المرأة في مجال التعليم، بلغت نسبة الطالبات الإناث الملتحقات في تخصص الهندسة في جامعة «تكساس أيه أند أم في قطر»، -إحدى الجامعات الشريكة لمؤسسة قطر- 50 %، وهي أعلى نسبة على الإطلاق في العام الأكاديمي الحالي، كذلك بلغت نسبة الطالبات الإناث الملتحقات بجامعة «كارنيجي ميلون في قطر» -وهي أيضاً إحدى الجامعات الشريكة لمؤسسة قطر- 63 %، وتشكّل نسبة الإناث اللواتي يشغلن مناصب قيادية في المراكز التابعة لمؤسسة قطر نحو 40 %.

تأتي مشاركة سعادة الشيخة هند بنت حمد آل ثاني في منتدى «ليس للنشر» ضمن زيارتها إلى الولايات المتحدة الأميركية، التي اختُتمت أمس الأول الجمعة، واستمرت لأربعة أيام.

وكانت سعادتها قد التقت بمسؤولين بارزين من الحرم الرئيسي للجامعات الشريكة لمؤسسة قطر، بالإضافة إلى قادة الفكر المؤثرين، وصنّاع السياسات في مجال التعليم والبحوث، وقد تخللت الزيارة، جولة في مبنى «وايل كورنيل للطب»، وهو جزء من جامعة كورنيل، بهدف لقاء الطلاب، والتعرف عن كثب على المبادرات البحثية المبتكرة.;
