QSTP awards young ‘techpreneurs’ at finale of the Arab Innovation Academy

Doha: The second edition of the Arab Innovation Academy (AIA), concluded with a grand pitching and graduation ceremony at QSTP on Tuesday.

AIA is a collaboration between Qatar Science & Technology Park (QSTP) — part of Qatar Foundation Research, Development and Innovation (QF RDI) and the European Innovation Academy (EIA).

AIA is the first and largest entrepreneurship program in the region, aimed at equipping entrepreneurs in Qatar, the MENA region, and the global community with the skill-set to build their start-up in just 10 days. The accelerated mode of experiential learning introduced participants to cutting-edge methods and tools in entrepreneurship, from team formation and idea creation to pitching to venture capitalists and angel investors. During the competition, participants developed and launched new tech ventures in a real marketplace, with genuine customer feedback.

The program, which began on January 2, brought together world-renowned technology collaborators; more than 160 participants selected from a pool of over 900 applicants 25 speakers and 37 mentors and investors, representing 30 different nationalities. The second edition of AIA also witnessed even greater participation in the program from Arab women.

Yosouf Abdulrahman Saleh, Executive Director, QSTP, said, “Arab Innovation Academy is one of QSTP’s flagship initiatives, by which we follow through on our commitment to support tech-based entrepreneurship ventures in Qatar – through incubation, funding, training, mentorship, and connections to regional and global tech innovation ecosystems. We believe that this program contributes enormously to expanding the economic diversity of Qatar, and in developing its human capital.”

Alar Kolk, President, EIA, said, “All of us at the Arab Innovation Academy are proud to have run the second edition of the program, in cooperation with QSTP and Qatar Foundation. Here, students develop the skills and confidence needed to develop start-ups from scratch, and learn to create unique value in the world of entrepreneurship and innovation.

“This unique, world-changing program is only possible through the vision and leadership of Qatar Foundation and QSTP. Our collaboration promises to empower young people to further the development of essential skills needed to transform the long-term prospects of the region.”

The start-up ideas produced by the participating teams addressed many global problems — from retaining children’s interest in reading and re-utilizing industrial wastes, to simplifying the search for blood donors — and spanned several industries, including health, education, construction, real estate, and tourism.

AIA 2019 first place winner was team ‘Salamat-e’, who developed a mobile app that serves as a ‘health passport.’ The second place award went to team ‘Fly Stories’, who created a platform that provides children with an interactive reading experience, and authors with an outlet to publish their stories. Teams ‘EyeTalk’ and ‘WheelsOnClick’ tied in third place. ‘EyeTalk’ presented a concept of a software-hardware system that can help people with disabilities communicate using just their eyes, by blinking. ‘WheelsOnClick’ created a platform that connects owners of underutilised cars with people in need of cars for a short period. The platform follows the popular Airbnb concept, which users can use to look for, or list cars, for rent.

اختتمت مؤخراً فعاليات النسخة الثانية من الأكاديمية العربية للابتكار، وهي ثمرة التعاون بين واحة قطر للعلوم والتكنولوجيا، عضو قطاع البحوث والتطوير والابتكار بمؤسسة قطر، والأكاديمية الأوروبية للابتكار. وتكلل حفل الختام باحتفالية تخرّج تم عرض ابتكارات المشاركين فيها. وتُعتبر الأكاديمية العربية للابتكار أول وأكبر برنامج من نوعه لريادة الأعمال في المنطقة، وتهدف إلى تزويد رواد الأعمال في قطر ومنطقة الشرق الأوسط والمجتمع العالمي بالمهارات التي تسمح لهم بإطلاق شركتهم الناشئة خلال 10 أيام فقط.

استقطب البرنامج، الذي بدأ في 2 يناير، نخبة من الخبراء المرموقين وأكثر من 160 مشاركاً تم اختيارهم، من أصل 900 تقدموا بطلباتهم، فضلاً عن 25 متحدثاً، و37 موجهاً ومستثمراً، يمثلون نحو 30 جنسية مختلفة.

كما شهدت نسخة هذا العام من الأكاديمية العربية للابتكار مشاركة واسعة النطاق من قِبل السيدات العربيات.

وأعرب السيد يوسف عبدالرحمن صالح، المدير التنفيذي لواحة قطر للعلوم والتكنولوجيا، عن فخره بنجاح الفعالية، قائلاً: «أنا في غاية الفخر بما أنجزناه خلال النسخة الثانية من الأكاديمية العربية للابتكار؛ حيث تمكنت معظم الفرق المشاركة من إتمام مشروعاتها خلال رحلتها معنا. وتُعدّ الأكاديمية العربية للابتكار واحدة من المبادرات الريادية للواحة، كونها تسمح لنا بترجمة التزامنا بدعم ريادة الأعمال التكنولوجية على أرض الواقع في قطر، من خلال الاحتضان، والتمويل، والتدريب، والتوجيه، وتوفير شبكة اتصال مع بيئة الابتكار التكنولوجي في المنطقة والعالم». ومن جهته، علّق السيد ألار كولك، رئيس الأكاديمية الأوروبية للابتكار، قائلاً: «نفخر جميعاً في الأكاديمية العربية للابتكار بإجراء النسخة الثانية من البرنامج، بالتعاون مع واحة قطر للعلوم والتكنولوجيا ومؤسسة قطر. وقد رحّبنا هذا العام بعدد قياسي من المشاركين القادمين من أرجاء منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا كافة. وتمكّن الطلاب هنا من اكتساب المهارات والثقة اللازمة لإنشاء شركاتهم الناشئة من الصفر، فضلاً عن تعلّم كيفية توفير قيمة مضافة فريدة من نوعها في عالم ريادة الأعمال والابتكار».

تصدّت الأفكار المبتكرة التي أبدعتها عقول الفرق المشاركة للعديد من المعضلات العالمية، على غرار تعزيز اهتمام الأطفال بالقراءة، وإعادة استخدام المخلفات الصناعية، وتسهيل عملية العثور على المتبرعين بالدم. وقد شملت الحلول قطاعات متنوعة، مثل الصحة والتعليم والإنشاءات والعقارات والسياحة.

وخلال العرض النهائي، استعرضت الفرق العشرة الأفضل أفكارها أمام المستثمرين، وحصلوا على تقييم نقدي مهم من المستثمرين، مما سيساعدهم على تطوير مفاهيم العمل بشكل أفضل.

وحل فريق «سلامات – إي» الذي طوّر تطبيقاً جوالاً يمكن استخدامه كجواز سفر صحي في المرتبة الأولى لنسخة 2019 من الأكاديمية العربية للابتكار. والتطبيق متصل بنظام تحديد الموقع (GPS)، كما أنه يحتوي على معلومات حول الأمراض الوبائية الموجودة في وجهة السفر، فضلاً عن وسائل الوقاية واللقاحات الضرورية.

ويضم الفريق كلاً من بشار شوار من جامعة بوليتكنك فلسطين، وشيماء المهداوي من جامعة محمد السادس لعلوم الصحة في المغرب، وبولينا لادشنكو من المدرسة العليا للاقتصاد بروسيا، وطارق عثمان بابكر من جامعة النيلين في السودان، ويافا عبدالرحيم من جامعة بيرزيت في فلسطين.

وعلّق ساندر فان در بلونك -أحد المستثمرين والشريك المغامر في شركة «هايوود أن سونز»- قائلاً: «أقدّر عالياً الأشخاص الذين قدموا إلى هنا كأفراد وتمكّنوا خلال أسبوعين فقط من العمل في فرق، ليخوضوا معاً تجارب مشوّقة وصعبة، لإيجاد الحلول والبدء بإنشاء شركتهم الناشئة. لقد كانت العروض التي قدموها في غاية الروعة، وإذا كانت هذه الفرق قادرة على أداء كل ذلك، فإن المنطقة ينتظرها الكثير. وأنا أتوقع الكثير من الإبداع مستقبلاً».;
