Ooredoo customers urged to take caution against scam calls

Doha: With a new rise of identity theft cases impersonating Ooredoo as their caller ID and targeting Qatar residents, Ooredoo has issued valuable reminders for customers to help them take adequate precautions, stay well informed and ensure they and their data stay safe. The company reiterated that it would never contact a customer using third-party apps.

Avoiding any request to share personal information over the phone is also crucial, said Ooredoo, and customers are reminded that the market-leading telco will never call to collect personal information or payment details over the phone. Other means of communication will always be used, should payment details be absolutely necessary.

Scammers are taking advantage of the modern-day dependence upon mobile phones, so a frequent scam is stealing personal information via phone operations with which credit cards can then be created and used or personal bank loans taken. According to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), personal data can also be sold illegally.

Manar Khalifa Al Muraikhi, Director PR and Corporate Communications at Ooredoo, said of the timely reminders: “We recognise fraudsters are employing ever more sophisticated techniques in their attempts to defraud our valued customers, and we are taking every precaution to help them keep their data safe and secure.”

One of the classic frauds currently seen is that of prize winning; the fraudster contacts the potential victim to inform them they have a won a prize, but in order to receive this prize the victim will need to provide anything from personal information to the ICC-ID (Integrated Circuit Card – ID) found at the back of the SIM card.

Ooredoo has urged any customer who is concerned about potential fraudulent activity to report any such suspicions via the 111 call centre or via email to fraudcontrol@ooredoo.qa.

مع تزايد حالات سرقة الهوية التي ينتحل فيها المحتالون اسم «ooredoo» على أنها الجهة التي تتصل بهم؛ وجهت الشركة نداء إلى جميع أفراد المجتمع بضرورة اتخاذ الاحتياطات والإجراءات اللازمة لتجنب الوقوع في مصيدة الاحتيال، ودعت الشركة العملاء للبقاء على اطلاع بأحدث المستجدات المتعلقة بهذا الموضوع. كما أكدت الشركة أنها لن تقوم أبداً بالاتصال بالعملاء عبر أي تطبيق أو وسيلة تعود لطرف ثالث.

ونوهت «ooredoo» إلى ضرورة توخي الحيطة والحذر عند تلقي اتصال يطلب منهم مشاركة المعلومات الشخصية أو المالية، وأكدت مرة أخرى أنها لن تسعى للحصول على مثل تلك المعلومات عبر الهاتف.

ويحاول المحتالون الاستفادة قدر الإمكان من حقيقة أن المستخدمين يعتمدون وبشكل كبير على هواتفهم الجوالة، ولذلك فإن هدفهم الدائم هو سرقة المعلومات الشخصية للمستخدمين، والتي يمكن للمحتالين من خلالها استغلال البطاقات الائتمانية للمستخدمين أو طلب قروض شخصية من البنوك. كما يمكن بيع البيانات الشخصية للمستخدمين بشكل غير قانوني من قبل المحتالين، بحسب المفوضية الفيدرالية للاتصالات FCC.

وبهذا الصدد، قالت منار خليفة المريخي، مديرة إدارة العلاقات العامة واتصالات الشركة في «ooredoo قطر»: « يعمل المحتالون على تطوير أساليب احتيالية جديدة لإيقاع العملاء وسرقتهم، لذا نحرص دائماً على اتخاذ جميع التدابير اللازمة لحماية عملائنا الكرام وبياناتهم، وأحد هذه التدابير هو نشر الوعي حيال المحاولات الاحتيالية تلك، وطرق تجنب الوقوع ضحية لها».;
