HBKU Press launches translation of award-winning book, After Coffee

Hamad Bin Khalifa University Press (HBKU) launched the English translation of After Coffee, written by the Egyptian critic and author Abdelrashid Mahmoudi, and was translated by Nashwa Gowanlock. The novel After Coffee, published in Arabic in 2013, discusses the social fabric, the topographical nature and the anthropological features of the Egyptian village in the 1940s.
The novel has a long ephemeral story, through a four-decade journey, and reviews the march of its expatriate hero, who was born and raised in a village in northern Egypt, and received his primary education in Ismailia, one of the cities of the Canal, and then moved to Europe, on a long diplomatic career in the country of classical music and international symphonies, Austria, the birthplace of Beethoven and Mozart.
The novel is 421 pages of medium pieces, and is a related narrative trilogy, the first part of which is called the Wolf Killer, in the village of Qawasima in the province of Eastern Egypt, while the events of the second part named the Lost Lamb in the space of the cities of Ismailia and Abu Kabir , the third part, called the Proof, opens in Vienna, capital of Austria.
The author of the novel is the Egyptian writer and novelist Abdelrashid Mahmoudi, a poet, narrator, novelist, translator and researcher in the fields of philosophy, criticism and history of literature, has published a poetry collection and three story collections, and the novel After Coffee is his second novel, after the novel, When the horses cry. “The translation of this book is especially important as we are highlighting an award-winning literary work in Arabic that spreads knowledge and ideas that are coming out of the Arab world.” he added.
He continued: “This type of cross-cultural communication through translations from Arabic to English is essential as it allows non-Arabic readers the chance to become immersed in the highest level of Arabic literature.”
The event, hosted by OWRI Research fellow in the School of Languages, Cultures, and Linguistics at SOAS, Dr Nora Parr, in a panel discussion on the intertextual exploration of belonging, of Egyptian society, and the Arabic literary past.
The focus was on the books unique investigation of contemporary (post-2011) Egypt that is not ‘dystopian’ or futuristic but rather a story that looks to the past (and not the future) in order to make its commentary on the present.
The translation, however, allowed Nashwa Gowanlock a little more creative license. “I reviewed her Gowanlock’s version wherever she had queries with regard to the original Arabic,” says Mahmoudi. “My comments and revisions were given as mere proposals; and it was left to her to produce the final version. So far, the initial reactions to the translation have been favourable.”
For Gowanlock, staying true to the original text while explaining potentially unknown idioms, phrases, and ideas in a way that English language readers would understand was definitely a challenge. “This is a case of working to maintain the spirit and tone of the work I’m translating,” explains Gowanlock,” focusing on transporting the meaning across, even if that requires taking so-called liberties, or using whichever expressions or turns of phrase are more congruent with the meaning expressed in the source text.
أصدرت دار جامعة حمد بن خليفة للنشر مؤخرا النسخة المترجمة للإنجليزية من رواية بعد القهوة للناقد والكاتب المصري عبدالرشيد محمودي، وقامت بترجمتها لنشوى غوانلوك .
وتتناول رواية “بعد القهوة” الصادرة بالعربية عام 2013، النسيج الاجتماعي والطبيعة الطبوغرافية والملامح الأنثروبولوجية للقرية المصرية في أربعينيات القرن الماضي، في الرواية ثمة نفس ملحمي طويل، عبر رحلة تمتد لأربعة عقود متتالية، وتستعرض مسيرة بطلها المغترب الذي ولد ونشأ في إحدى قرى شمال مصر ، وتلقى تعليمه الأولي في الإسماعيلية، إحدى مدن القناة، لينتقل بعدها إلى أوروبا، في رحلة عمل دبلوماسية طويلة في بلد الموسيقى الكلاسيكية والسيمفونيات العالمية، النمسا، مسقط رأس بيتهوفن وموتسارت .
الرواية تقع في 421 صفحة من القطع المتوسطة، وتعد ثلاثية روائية متصلة، تدور أحداث الجزء الأول منها المسمى قاتلة الذئب في قرية القواسمة بمحافظة الشرقية في مصر، فيما تدور أحداث الجزء الثاني المسمى الخروف الضال في فضاء مدينتي الإسماعيلية وأبوكبير، أما أحداث الجزء الثالث المسمى البرهان فتدور في فيينا، عاصمة النمسا.
ومؤلف الرواية هو الكاتب والروائي المصري عبد الرشيد صادق المحمودي، وهو شاعر وقاص وروائي ومترجم وباحث في مجالات الفلسفة والنقد وتاريخ الأدب، نشر مجموعة شعرية وثلاث مجموعات قصصية، وتعد رواية بعد القهوة روايته الثانية، بعد رواية عندما تبكي الخيول.
وقال فخري صالح رئيس النشر العربي في دار جامعة حمد بن خليفة للنشر في بيان صحفي اليوم: إننا في الدار ملتزمون بأن نقدم لجمهورنا من القراء سواء باللغة الإنجليزية أو العربية روائع الأدب العالمي.
ولعل ترجمة هذا الكتاب تحظى بأهمية خاصة، ليس لأنه من الروائع الأدبية الحائزة على الجوائز فحسب، بل لأنه أيضا ينقل إلى العالم صورا معرفية وفكرية من قلب العالم العربي.
وهذا النمط من التواصل بين الحضارات عبر الترجمة من العربية إلى الإنجليزية من الأهمية بمكان حيث يتيح للقراء غير الناطقين بالعربية فرصة التعمق في ذلك المستوى الرفيع من الأدب العربي.
ونظمت دار جامعة حمد بن خليفة للنشر بمناسبة إصدار الترجمة الانجليزية للرواية ندوة خاصة في كلية الدراسات الشرقية والإفريقية في لندن شارك فيها الكاتب والمترجمة، والدكتورة نورا بار، زميل بحوث في برنامج اللغات والثقافات والألسنية في كلية الدراسات الشرقية والإفريقية في لندن، وتضمنت نقاشا حول الاستكشاف الأدبي للانتماء، والمجتمع المصري، والماضي الأدبي العربي. وتم التركيز على ما تتضمنه الرواية من بحث مميز لمصر الحديثة (ما بعد 2011) من خلال سبر الماضي (وليس استكشاف المستقبل) لانتقاد الحاضر.
وقد أفسحت الترجمة لنشوى غوانلوك مجالا للإبداع، وقد علق الكاتب عبدالرشيد محمودي على ترجمتها قائلا: “لقد طالعت ترجمة غوانلوك، وأجبتها عن كل تساؤلاتها بخصوص النص العربي الأصلي، ولم تكن ملاحظاتي سوى مجرد اقتراحات، وتركت الأمر إليها في نسختها الأخيرة. ولم تخرج الانطباعات الأولية عن ترجمتها أبدا عن دائرة القبول والاستحسان”.
أما التحدي الأكبر الذي واجه غوانلوك فكان “عدم الخروج” عن النص الأصلي مع إيضاح الاصطلاحات والعبارات والأفكار الغريبة عن قارئ النص الإنجليزي وإعادة صياغتها بأسلوب مستساغ بالنسبة له وعن ذلك قالت غوانلوك: “إنها حالة من الاجتهاد للحفاظ على روح وإيقاع العمل الذي أترجمه، فالتركيز على نقل المعنى، وإن تطلب ما يمكن وصفه ببعض التحرر أو استخدام تعبيرات أو صور أخرى للعبارات، لهو عين الالتزام الحقيقي بالمعنى المقصود في النص الأصلي.
