Qatari student club conducts Georgetown varsity’s National Day Fair
نادي الطلاب القطري في جورجتاون ينظم احتفالات باليوم الوطني
The Qatari Student Association of Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q), Al Liwan, organised a National Day Fair on campus that brought the entire community together for food, fun and an opportunity to learn more about the country’s history and traditions.
As National Day in Qatar takes place over the university’s winter break, students plan their festivities earlier so that they can celebrate the occasion. The role of organising National Day celebrations in the diverse multicultural community at GU-Q belongs to Al Liwan. “For Al Liwan, the National Day is the most vital time of the year,” explained the club’s president, Abdulrahman Khalid al-Mughesib. The International Politics senior and event organiser added, “At Al Liwan, we work hard to create an opportunity for everyone at Georgetown to learn more about Qatar, and to celebrate with us a significant day for all of Qatar.”
At the all-day fair dedicated to Qatar’s rich cultural traditions, students, faculty and staff sipped fragrant local coffee and traditional snacks while enjoying live oud performances. Henna artists carefully applied traditional red patterns, while a photo booth stocked with traditional dress gave visitors an appreciation of local culture and the chance to make lasting memories of the day.
“Education City is really the training ground for Qatar’s future leaders and innovators, and working together to organise this event at Georgetown symbolises how our commitment to education and our pride in our nation go hand in hand,” said Noora al-Adba, an International Politics major and the club’s vice-president.
Club members shared homemade goodies and local vendors served a selection of local flavours to visitors. Halo and Empire, popular speciality pastry and coffee shops, and Um Abdulaziz, a restaurant that specialises in regional cuisine, was among several dishing up tasty reminders of Qatar’s tradition of generous hospitality, a social value that creates and strengthens bonds between friends, families and entire communities.
In a show of national solidarity, three members of the club also participated in Qatar Foundation’s joint celebrations, Education City United, held in the Ceremonial Court earlier in the week. Club president Abdulrahman along with fellow GU-Q students Saud al-Ahmed and Ali al-Sheebani participated in performing the national anthem.
GU-Q will also participate in the official festivities of the holiday at Darb Al Saai. The Al Liwan club’s goal is to promote and increase awareness on the GU-Q campus about the language, culture and social heritage of Qatar through creative mediums.
في مجتمع متنوع ومتعدد الثقافات كجامعة جورجتاون في قطر، يضطلع نادي “الليوان” للطلاب القطريين في الجامعة بدور تنظيم احتفالات اليوم الوطني لدولة قطر. وفي هذا العام، يفخر النادي بقيامه بهذا الدور وتنظيم معرض لليوم الوطني في الحرم الجامعي في فعالية جمعت أسرة الجامعة بأكملها للاستمتاع بأجواء البهجة والمرح وتناول الأطعمة التقليدية كما كانت المناسبة فرصة لمعرفة المزيد عن تاريخ قطر وتقاليدها.
ونظرا لكون اليوم الوطني يتزامن مع عطلة فصل الشتاء في الجامعة، فإن الطلاب يخططون للاحتفال بتلك المناسبة في وقت مبكر ليتمكنوا من إنجازها قبل العطلات.
وعن أهمية المناسبة أوضح رئيس النادي عبد الرحمن خالد، طالب السنة النهائية تخصص العلوم السياسية الدولية: بالنسبة لمجموعتنا الطلابية، فإن اليوم الوطني هو أهم وقت في السنة”، فنحن نعمل جاهدين لإيجاد الفرص للجميع في جورجتاون لمعرفة المزيد عن دولة قطر”.
ففي المعرض الذي استمر طوال اليوم، وخصص للتقاليد الثقافية في قطر، قام الطلاب وأعضاء هيئة التدريس والعاملون باحتساء القهوة المحلية والوجبات الخفيفة التقليدية أثناء الاستمتاع بعروض عزف على العود.
وقام فنانو الحناء برسم الاشكال التقليدية بعناية، في حين امتلأ كشك الصور بالأزياء التقليدية مما منح الزوار مذاقا للثقافة المحلية وفرصة لترك انطباعات ايجابية عن اليوم.
وتقول نورة العذبة، طالبة العلوم السياسية الدولية بالجامعة ونائبة رئيس النادي: “تعد المدينة التعليمية في الواقع ساحة للتدريب لقادة المستقبل والمبدعين في قطر، ويرمز العمل التعاوني المشترك لتنظيم هذا الحدث.
إضافة إلى الأطعمة المنزلية، فقدم الباعة المحليون مجموعة مختارة من النكهات المحلية للزوار، ومخابز المعجنات الشعبية والمقاهي المتخصصة، والمطاعم المتخصصة في المأكولات الإقليمية والمحلية، والعديد من الشركات التي قدمت اطعمة ومشروبات تقليدية قطرية بلمسات من كرم الضيافة، وهي قيمة اجتماعية تخلق الروابط بين الأصدقاء والعائلات والمجتمعات وتعززها.
وفي عرض للتضامن الوطني، شارك ثلاثة من أعضاء النادي في الاحتفالات المشتركة لمؤسسة قطر تحت عنوان “مدينة تعليمية متحدة”، التي أقيمت في ساحة الاحتفالات في وقت سابق من الأسبوع. وشارك رئيس النادي عبد الرحمن مع زملائه الطلاب من جامعة جورجتاون الطلاب سعود الأحمد وعلي الشيباني في اداء النشيد الوطني.
