Art Meets Heritage at the Red Bull Curates: Dhow Art exhibition

The journey of Red Bull Curates: Dhow Art has come to an end with the unveiling of the 6 dhows on December 14. The dhows were casted into the spotlight at an exhibition held at the Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum in celebration of creativity and heritage. This initiative came to life in partnership with Vodafone Qatar, Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum and Doha Fire station.
The project welcomed a selection of Qatar’s promising as well as established talents to express art on an untraditional canvas, the dhow. Led by curator Khalifa Al Obaidly, Director of Doha Fire Station, these artists were chosen to turn their inspirational designs into a reality.
Art and creativity enthusiasts gathered to witness the 6real life-sized dhows as they were finally revealed, portraying the artists’ inspiring imagery. In celebration of culture and arts, the presentation also featured several local and international performances throughout the evening.
The exhibition was attended by Sheikha Alanood Bint Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani, H.E, the Austrian Ambassador in Qatar, Dr. Willy Kempel, director of the Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum Kees Wieringa, and Qatar’s leading media and opinion leaders.
Sheikha Alanood welcomed everyone and congratulated the artists who worked hard to bring these dhows into life. “We are very excited about such an initiative by Red Bull that falls in line with the Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum’s vision of creating a community for artists,” Sheikha Stated.
Ambassador Willy Kempel expressed his support for the initiative and the art scene in Qatar, saying: “Red Bull Curates Dhow art is a wonderful project,”. He also announced the wall art project at Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum and taking part in it as a curator.
Commenting on his appreciation of the project, director of the museum, Kees Wieringa stated, “When the idea initially came through from Red Bull, I heard of art, culture and heritage separately. But looking at the dhows now, I see contemporary art that speaks of heritage displayed at the museum. It all fits together perfectly”.
Through the six dhows, Mubarak Al Malik depicted the dramatic farewell of a sailor and his family, while Muna Al Bader’s captured the joyful scenery of traditional Qatari weddings. Fatima Al Naimi told the tale of a dhow’s suspenseful journey as Fahad Al Maadheed brought together the symbolic horse and camel. Noor Abuissa illustrated Qatar’s old traditions of pearl diving through her contemporary brush strokes, meanwhile Jamila Al Ansari cast a colorful take on Qatar’s past and it’s present.
“I knew we we’re going to surprise the entire scene. There’s a lot in store for everybody, not just art enthusiasts. This has been a new experience, taking the application of art to new heights. Turning the dhow into a canvas, that’s something nobody could have imagined!”, explained Dhow Art’s curator, Khalifa Al Obaidly.
Red Bull Curates: Dhow Art was held in partnership with official media partner I LOVE QATAR, community partners Qatar Living, What’s Going On Qatar, and Qatar Events, Hospitality partner City Centre Rotana Doha, the Creative Union, Smart Events, Hempel Paints, and Century Talents Qatar.
وصلت رحلة ريد بل يقدّم: داو آرت إلى خواتيمها، مع إزاحة الستار عن مراكب الداو في 14 كانون الأوّل/ديسمبر. وقد سُلّط الضوء على المراكب الستّة خلال معرض أقيم في متحف الشيخ فيصل بن قاسم آل ثاني، احتفاءً بالإبداع والإرث. ولا بدّ من التنويه أنّ هذه المبادرة أبصرت النور بفضل الشراكة مع فودافون قطر، ومتحف الشيخ فيصل بن قاسم آل ثاني، ومطافئ الدوحة.
ضمّ المشروع لفيفًا من المواهب الواعدة والمعروفة في قطر، للتعبير عن فنّهم على لوحات رسم غير تقليديّة، ما هي إلاّ مراكب الداو. وتحت إشراف القيّم الفنّي خليفة العبيدلي، مدير مطافئ الدوحة، اختير هؤلاء الفنّانون لبثّ الحياة في التصاميم الملهمة الّتي قدّموها.
وقد عج المكان بمحبي الفن والابداع، أتوا لمشاهدة مراكب الداو الستّة مع إزاحة الستار عنها بعد انتظار طويل، للكشف عن المشاهد الملهمة الّتي صوّرها الفنّانون. وإحياءً للثقافة والفنون، تخلّل الحدث أيضًا عددٌ من العروض المحليّة والدوليّة توالت طيلة الأمسية.
حضر المعرض شيخة العنود بنت فيصل بن قاسم آل ثاني، سعادة سفير النمسا في قطر، د. ويلي كمبل، ومدير متحف الشيخ فيصل بن قاسم آل ثاني، السيّد كيس ويرينغا.
شيخة العنود بنت فيصل بن قاسم آل ثاني رحبت بالحضور وهنأت جميع الفنانين المشاركين وأثنت على جهودهم في تحويل مراكب الداو الى قطع فنية. وأضافت: ” نحن متحمسون كثيرا لهذه المبادرة من ريد بل والتي تندرج ضمن وجهة متحف الشيخ فيصل بن قاسم آل ثاني لتوفير مساحة للفنانين للتعبير عن مواهبهم.”
وعبر سعادة السفير ويلي كيمبل عن دعمه لمبادرة “ريد بل يقدم داو آرت” والمجتمع الفني في قطر. كما أعلن عن مشاركته كقيما” فنيا ضمن مشروع الحائط الفني في متحف الشيخ فيصل بن قاسم آل ثاني.
وعبّر السيّد كيس ويرينغا مدير المتحف عن تقديره لهذا المشروع قائلاً: “عندما طُرِحت هذه الفكرة في البداية، كان ثمة فصل بين الفنّ، والثقافة، والإرث. ولكّنني إذ أنظر الآن إلى مراكب الداو، أرى الفنّ المعاصر يحكي عن الإرث المعروض في المتحف، وجميع هذه العناصر في تناغم تام”.
وضمّت تحف الداو السّتة أعمال مبارك المالك الّذي رسم مشهدًا مؤثرًا لبحّار يودّع أسرته، في حين نقلت لنا منى البدر صورًا مبهجة لحفل زفاف قطري تقليدي. وروت فاطمة النعيمي حكاية رحلة الداو المشوّقة، في حين جمع فهد المعاضيد بين رمزي الفرس والجمل. أمّا نور أبو عيسى، فقد صوّرت تقاليد صيد اللؤلؤ القطريّة القديمة بريشتها المعاصرة، بينما أحيت الألوان لوحة جميلة الأنصاري الّتي عكست ماضي قطر وحاضرها.
ويشرح القيّم الفنّي لمبادرة ريد بل يقدم داو آرت خليفة العبيدلي قائلا: “كنت على ثقة من أنّنا سنفاجئ الجميع. ففي جعبتنا الكثير لنقدّمه، وليس لعشّاق الفنّ وحسب. هذه التجربة كانت جديدة، وارتقت بتطبيق الفنون إلى مستويات عليا. فما كان أحد ليتصوّر أن تتحوّل مراكب الداو إلى لوحات للرسم”.
تمّ تنظيم هذه المبادرة بالشراكة مع I Love Qatar وهو الشريك الإعلامي الرسمي، في حين يضّم الشركاء المجتمعيون Qatar Living و What’s Going On Qatarو Qatar Event، إضافة إلى الشريك الفندقي سيتي سنتر روتانا الدوحة، وكل من Creative Union، و Smart Events، و Hempel Paintsو Century Talents Qatar.
