Qatargas’ JBOG Recovery Facility wins Sustainability Award

DOHA: Qatargas’ Jetty Boil-Off Gas (JBOG) Recovery Facility has been awarded a Qatar Sustainability Award during the Qatar Sustainability Week 2018. The prestigious accolade was awarded to Qatargas by the Qatar Green Building Council, a member of Qatar Foundation at a gala dinner held in honour of individuals, institutions and organisations who have positively impacted society with world-class sustainable initiatives.
The Qatar Sustainability Awards recognise the efforts, commitment and contributions of individuals, institutions and organisations in furthering sustainable development and environmental protection in Qatar and beyond. The awards are supported by the Abdullah bin Hamad Al-Attiyah International Foundation for Energy and Sustainable Development.
Built and operated by Qatargas, the JBOG Recovery facility minimises flaring at the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) loading berths in Ras Laffan City. This facility commenced operations in October 2014 and recovers more than 90 percent of the boil-off gas that was previously flared near the jetties. The JBOG collects the boil-off gas and transports it to a central compressor prior to returning it to the LNG plants where it is used as fuel gas, or converted back into LNG.
The facility reduces jetty flaring by approximately 90 percent and CO2 emissions by approximately 1.6 million tonnes per annum. The reduction in CO2 emissions is equivalent to the emissions of 175,000 cars. As a result, the JBOG facility supports the environmental protection and sustainability targets of the Qatar National Vision (QNV) 2030, and supports the State of Qatar’s commitment to reduce climate changing carbon emissions.
حصل مرفق استرجاع الغاز المتبخر أثناء الشحن بقطرغاز على إحدى جوائز قطر للاستدامة وذلك أثناء فعاليات أسبوع الاستدامة القطري لعام 2018. وقد تم تسليم هذه الجائزة المرموقة لقطرغاز من قبل مجلس قطر للأبنية الخضراء، وهو أحد أعضاء مؤسسة قطر، في حفل عشاء أقيم على شرف الأفراد والمؤسسات والمنظمات التي أثرت بشكل إيجابي على المجتمع بمبادرات مستدامة عالمية المستوى.
وتهدف جوائز قطر للاستدامة إلى تقدير جهود والتزام ومساهمات الأفراد والمؤسسات والمنظمات في تعزيز التنمية المستدامة وحماية البيئة في قطر وخارجها. وتقوم مؤسسة عبدالله بن حمد العطية الدولية للطاقة والتنمية المستدامة بدعم بعض فئات هذه الجائزة.
يُعد مرفق استرجاع الغاز المتبخر أثناء الشحن، الذي بدأ تشغيله في الربع الأخير من عام 2014، أكبر مشروع بيئي من نوعه في دولة قطر. ويجمع هذا المرفق الغاز المتبخر من ناقلات الغاز الطبيعي المسال ويضغطه في مرفق مركزي، ثم يرسل الغاز المضغوط إلى منتجي الغاز الطبيعي المسال حيث يجري استهلاكه في صورة وقود أو تحويله مرة أخرى إلى غاز طبيعي مسال. وقد انخفض الاحتراق بفعل عمليات استرجاع الغاز المتبخر أثناء الشحن بنسبة تزيد على 90٪.
وبالنسبة للحد من انبعاثات غازات الاحتباس الحراري فيؤدي مرفق استرجاع الغاز المتبخر أثناء الشحن إلى الحد من انبعاثات ثاني أكسيد الكربون بأكثر من 2.5 مليون طن سنوياً، ما يعادل انبعاثات 175000 سيارة. وإجمالاً فإنه يوفر 29 مليار قدم مكعبة من الغاز سنوياً من خلال الحد من الاحتراق، وهي كمية تكفي لإمداد أكثر من 300 ألف منزل بالطاقة الكهربائية.
تجدر الإشارة إلى أن مرفق استرجاع الغاز المتبخر أثناء الشحن يخدم أهداف حماية البيئة والاستدامة في رؤية قطر الوطنية 2030، ويدعم التزام دولة قطر بخفض انبعاثات الكربون المتسببة في تغيير المناخ.
