European airlines are required to promote regional status

DOHA: Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, Akbar Al Baker, yesterday spoke passionately about the challenges facing the aviation industry in Europe at the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Wings of Change conference held in Madrid.

In his capacity as the Chairman of IATA, Al Baker attended the conference and participated in a quick-fire question and answer session moderated by BBC presenter Babita Sharma.

Al Baker said: “Aviation growth has shifted to geographical areas outside the EU such as the Asia-Pacific and the Middle East in recent years, and the European Commission has been very proactive in pursuing comprehensive air transport agreements with Asean, Qatar, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Tunisia. In my view, it is very important for EU air carriers to capitalise on the growth opportunities offered in emerging aviation markets.”

“EU carriers should also reinforce their global position by offering greater connectivity to EU citizens and foreign travellers alike, as many European capitals remain top in-bound tourism markets for global tourism. In the long run, participation of EU carriers through the conclusion of comprehensive air transport agreements is key to ensure the competitiveness of the EU aviation sector,” he added.

“Protectionism should not be the answer as this will hinder the competitiveness of the EU aviation sector and the agenda pursued by the Juncker Commission.”

Rafal Milczarski, CEO of LOT Polish Airlines; Luis Gallego, CEO of Iberia; and Carsten Spohr, Chairman and CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa, also joined the ‘CEOs on the Spot’ session, and were quick to share with the audience an inside view of the industry and what it takes to make an airline successful.

Following the success of the Wings of Change concept, which originated in Latin America, IATA has brought the conference to Europe for the first time and will potentially continue to expand the brand’s reach to other markets in the future. The two-day event brings together airline CEOs, Ministers, and industry experts to discuss the current state and future of air transport.

IATA Wings of Change takes place at a critical time for the industry as it contends with an unprecedented increase in demand, capacity bottlenecks in the air and on the ground, and looks to harness the many opportunities of the digital revolution. Key topics on the agenda include Innovation, Safety, Security, Sustainability, Diversity and Aviation Competitiveness.

ألقى سعادة السيد أكبر الباكر -الرئيس التنفيذي لمجموعة الخطوط الجوية القطرية- كلمة أمس حول التحديات التي تواجه قطاع الطيران في أوروبا، خلال مؤتمر «أجنحة التغيير» للاتحاد الدولي للنقل الجوي (إياتا)، الذي أُقيم في العاصمة الإسبانية مدريد. وبصفته رئيساً لمجلس المحافظين لـ «إياتا»، حضر سعادة السيد الباكر فعاليات المؤتمر، وشارك في جلسة مفتوحة للأسئلة والأجوبة أدارتها مقدمة البرامج على قناة «بي. بي. سي» بابيتا شارما.

وقال السيد الباكر: «شهد قطاع الطيران في الأسواق غير الأوروبية، مثل منطقة آسيا والمحيط الهادي والشرق الأوسط، نمواً ملحوظاً خلال الأعوام الماضية، فيما قامت المفوضية الأوروبية بدور استباقي لإبرام اتفاقيات نقل جوي شاملة مع دول الأسيان وقطر وتركيا وأذربيجان وأرمينيا وتونس. ومن وجهة نظري، أرى أنه يتعين على شركات الطيران التابعة لدول الاتحاد الأوروبي الاستفادة من فرص النمو المتاحة في أسواق الطيران الناشئة».

مكانة

وأضاف: «كما يجب على شركات الطيران الأوروبية تعزيز مكانتها الإقليمية، من خلال توفير خيارات سفر أكثر للمسافرين من أوروبا ومن مختلف أنحاء العالم، حيث تُعدّ الدول الأوروبية وجهات مفضلة للسياحة الدولية. ومن شأن الشراكة في شركات الطيران التابعة للاتحاد الأوروبي، من خلال إنجاز اتفاقيات النقل الجوي الشاملة، قيامها بدور مهم لضمان سوق طيران تنافسي على المدى الطويل».

واختتم الباكر: «إن سياسة الحماية المتبعة حالياً سوف تضع العديد من العقبات في طريق إيجاد سوق تنافسي في قطاع الطيران الأوروبي وفي طريق الأجندة والخطط التي تتطلع المفوضية الأوروبية إلى إنجازها».

وانضم كل من السيد رافائيل ميلكزارسكي الرئيس التنفيذي لخطوط «لوت» الجوية البولندية، والسيد كارستن سبوهر رئيس مجلس الإدارة والرئيس التنفيذي لطيران «لوفتهانزا»، إلى جلسة بعنوان «رؤساء تنفيذيين تحت الأضواء»، حيث تشاركوا مع الحضور وجهات نظرهم إزاء العديد من القضايا، بالإضافة إلى تناولهم أسراراً حول قطاع الطيران وما الذي يقود شركة طيران إلى النجاح.

وأقيم مؤتمر «أجنحة التغيير» لأول مرة في أوروبا، بعد النجاح الكبير للمؤتمر والذي استُضيف في دول أميركا الجنوبية مسبقاً، حيث يسعى الاتحاد الدولي للنقل الجوي (إياتا) إلى مواصلة تقديم هذا المفهوم الجديد لعدد من الأسواق في المستقبل.;
