Curtain rises at 6th Ajyal Film Festival
افتتاح مهرجان أجيال السينمائي السادس
DOHA: The sixth Ajyal Film Festival raised its curtain yesterday with a star-studded red carpet followed by a successful Middle East premiere of Doha Film Institute (DFI)-supported film Freedom Fields, at Katara Drama Theatre.
The first feature film by Libyan-British director Naziha Arebi, Freedom Fields is an inspiring journey through the ups and downs of three women’s efforts to build a football team in post-revolution Libya, even as the country descends into civil war.
“It’s amazing to be here in a festival for the youth because Freedom Fields is really a film about the new generation, so for me it’s a perfect fit to be able to share it to the young people of the region,” Arebi told reporters prior to the screening.
Fatma Hassan Al Remaihi, Festival Director and Chief Executive Officer of DFI, said: “Ajyal Film Festival’s spirit is underlined by its new theme, ‘A Voice for Generations’ and it serves as a space for highlighting the power and responsibility that comes with having a voice and reflects the vision of Qatar’s leadership — and that of the Doha Film Institute — to celebrate the values of openness, mutual dialogue, respect for others and diversity.”
Over a hundred local and international actors, filmmakers, artists and dignitaries walked the red carpet amid cheers from hundreds of young jurors and cinephiles, among them were Marvel superhero Evangeline Lilly and Turkish actor Engin Altan Duzyatan.
Lilly, known for playing Wasp in Marvel movies including the recently released Ant-Man and the Wasp and the still untitled fourth instalment of Avengers to hit the screens next year, looked elegant on the red carpet with her long black gown.
Accompanied by a Turkish delegation of actors, filmmakers and producers, Duzyatan praised Ajyal calling it an important international festival.
“It’s such an amazing atmosphere. I’m very happy to be here and thank you so much for the hospitality of the people in this festival which is very important in the world,” he said while speaking to the local media.
High ranking officials including DFI board members H E Sheikh Thani bin Hamad Al Thani and Issa bin Mohammed Al Mohannadi joined other distinguished guests and celebrities from Qatar, the Arab world and international cinema such as Ali Abdulsatar, Faleh Fayaz, Saad Burshaid, Ahmad Al Maadeed, Bulent Inal, Shuaib Rashed, Saleh Zaal, Mohammad Al Hamli, and Muna Shaddad.
Eighty-one films from 36 countries are participating in this year’s festival. They consist of 23 features and 58 shorts, including 24 from the Arab World and 44 by women filmmakers.
The programme includes festival favourites and award winners such as Cannes Jury Prize winning Capharnaüm by Nadine Labaki; Berlinale Amnesty International Film Prize winner Central Airport THF by Karim Ainouz and Sundance winner The Price of Free by Derek Doneen.
In competition are 13 feature films and a series of short films to be judged by a jury of over 550 young jurors from 55 nationalities including 25 international jurors from Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Italy, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Spain, Turkey and the United Kingdom.
Fourteen films supported by the Institute through its Grants programme will also be screened at the festival.
A trans-adapted version of Oscar-nominated film Theeb will also be screened on December 2 to mark UN International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
One of the highlights of the festival is the Made in Qatar programme which comprises 16 films, including the world premieres of next completed projects from Qatari Film Fund recipients. And in honour of the late Qatari actor and national icon Abdul Aziz Jassem, Ajyal 2018 will be giving out the Abdul Aziz Jassem Award for acting as part of the Made in Qatar awards.
Other features of the festival are the Ajyal Creativity Hub which offers cultural and creative activities such as Geekdom, Ajyal Talks, [Re]action interactive exhibition and the Ajyal Stage which promises an exciting showcase of live performances from musicians, dancers and artistes.

افتتحت مساء اليوم بالمؤسسة العامة للحي الثقافي “كتارا”، فعاليات مهرجان أجيال السينمائي السادس الذي تنظمه مؤسسة الدوحة للأفلام ، بحفل مراسم السجادة الحمراء ويستمر إلى 3 ديسمبر المقبل.
حضر حفل الافتتاح سعادة الشيخ ثاني بن حمد آل ثاني، والسيد عيسى بن محمد المهندي عضوا مجلس الأمناء بمؤسسة الدوحة للأفلام، وعدد من السفراء والدبلوماسيين المعتمدين لدى الدولة.
وعرض في الافتتاح، فيلم “ملاعب الحرية” من إنتاج (قطر ، المملكة المتحدة، هولندا، الولايات المتحدة، ليبيا ، لبنان، كندا / 2018) للمخرجة نزيهة عريبي، ويروي قصة ثلاث نساء وجهودهن في تأسيس فريق كرة قدم في حقبة ما بعد الثورة في ليبيا. ورشح الفيلم الذي حصل على دعم من مؤسسة الدوحة للأفلام، لجائزة أفضل فيلم وثائقي في مهرجان ستوكهولم السينمائي 2018.
ويأتي الفيلم في وقت تعمل فيه اللجنة العليا للمشاريع والإرث المسؤولة عن استضافة كأس العالم قطر 2022 لتنظيم أول بطولة في الشرق الأوسط، ويتزامن مع تسلم قطر لراية البطولة العالمية من روسيا، كما أن الفيلم يعكس شعار المهرجان وهو “صوت الأجيال”.
إلى ذلك، عرف حفل الافتتاح، تقديم المهرجان تحية تقدير للفنان القطري الراحل عبد العزيز جاسم، حيث أعلن عن تدشين “جائزة عبد العزيز جاسم لأفضل ممثل” تقدم ضمن جوائز برنامج “صنع في قطر” من تقديم شركة أوريدو للاتصالات.
وسار على السجادة الحمراء عدد كبير من الضيوف والفنانين من قطر من بينهم: علي عبد الستار، فالح فايز، سعد بورشيد، أحمد المعاضيد. كما حضر عدد من النجوم من المنطقة والعالم منهم الممثلة العالمية إيفانجلين ليلي، النجم التركي إنجين ألتان دوزياتان، الفنانة بولنت إنال، ومنى شداد وشعيب راشد، صالح زعل، محمد الحملي، وآخرون.
وأكدت السيدة فاطمة حسن الرميحي، الرئيس التنفيذي لمؤسسة الدوحة للأفلام ومديرة مهرجان أجيال السينمائي في كلمتها الافتتاحية، على أهمية المهرجان ومكانته الثابتة في المشهد الثقافي في دولة قطر والمنطقة حيث يشكل قوة دافعة لتقديم أعمال المواهب الشابة والمخضرمة وعرضها لشريحة واسعة من الجمهور والمشاهدين، موضحة أن المهرجان، يعيد إحياء روح السينما من خلال إعادة الناس إلى الأسس المشتركة التي قامت عليها وذلك من خلال القصص التي تعبر عن تطلعاتهم وآمالهم.
ونوهت الرميحي، بأنه في عالم اليوم الذي تغزوه التكنولوجيا الحديثة، من المهم إيجاد التوازن بين الرسالة الحقيقية للسينما وبين استخدام التكنولوجيا والعالم الافتراضي.
ويعرض المهرجان في هذا العام 81 فيلما من 36 بلدا وتشمل 23 فيلما طويلا و58 فيلما قصيرا من ضمنها 24 فيلما من العالم العربي و44 فيلما لمخرجات نساء. كما يتضمن برنامج أجيال عروض أفلام روسية في قسم “صنع في روسيا” احتفالا بالعام الثقافي لقطر وروسيا 2018.
وفي قلب المهرجان، يحتفي قسم “صنع في قطر” بالمواهب السينمائية القطرية والمقيمة في قطر ويعكس تطور صناعة السينما المحلية.
وتضم المسابقة الرسمية في أجيال 13 فيلماً طويلاً. ويشارك في لجنة التحكيم الخاصة بالمسابقة الرسمية 550 حكماً من 55 جنسية من بينهم 25 حكما دوليا يحضرون إلى الدوحة من عدة بلدان منها أرمينيا، البوسنة والهرسك، إيطاليا، الأردن، الكويت، عمان، إسبانيا، تركيا، المملكة المتحدة.
جدير بالذكر، أن مهرجان أجيال السينمائي احتفال سنوي بالأفلام صُمّم لتنمية عقول الشباب ودعم بناء مواطنين عالميين يتمتعون بالوعي والمعرفة ليشكلوا قادة المستقبل وذلك ضمن بيئة تعليمية وإبداعية.
يجمع مهرجان أجيال السينمائي الناس من مختلف الأعمار لمشاهدة العروض والمشاركة في الفعاليات التي تلهم التفاعل الإبداعي وتحفز الحوار حول السينما.
ومن خلال برامج الحكام التي تجمع الصغار والشباب من عمر 8 إلى 21 عاماً، يحظى هؤلاء بفرصة مشاهدة ومناقشة وتحليل الأفلام والثقافات العالمية، فيطورون بذلك قيم الثقة بالنفس ومهارات التفكير النقدي المستقل وحرية التعبير عن الذات ويرفعون من مستوى ذائقتهم السينمائية.
