Sheikh Hamad Award receives overwhelming response in Oman

DOHA: The Media Team of the Steering Committee of Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding concluded yesterday its visit to Oman to promote the award which received an overwhelming response in the country.

During the visit, Dr. Hanan Al Fayyad, Spokesperson of the award, and Dr. Imtanan Al Samadi, a member of Media Team, introduced the fourth edition of the award, its goal and vision through a number of interactive sessions and cultural programmes, said a release.

This visit came within the framework of international cooperation between Qatar and Oman. The award awareness programme began with an interactive session of Media Team with a number of translators of Al Nadwah Center for Translation run by a group of young Omani translators, who reviewed their activities.

For her part, Dr. Hanan Al Fayyad talked in details about Sheikh Hamad Award and explained that how this modern centre can become a huge cultural translation project with their efforts and determination.

The meeting was followed by a cultural symposium entitled “Literary Translation, Reality and Ambition”, in which Dr. Imtinan Al Samadi gave presentation on “Literary Translation Reality Ambition” in which she spoke about the translation between the past and the present. She explained the importance of translation. “The language helps create thought, determines the direction and influences the nature of the activity of the speaker,” said Al Samadi.

Speaking about the challenges of translation, Al Samadi, said: “The most difficult thing in translation is to translate the cultural identity of people because of their cultural particularity. And the differences of cultures and language are connected to the lifestyle.”
Dr. Hanan Al Fayyad gave presentation explaining the Sheikh Hamad Award its objectives, vision terms and conditions for registering the entries.

She said that categories of the Award for 2018 include translation from Arabic into English; translation from English into Arabic; translation from Arabic into a language other than English and translation from a language other than English into Arabic

“The total value of the award is $2m divided into three categories: Translation Prizes $800,000; Achievement Prizes $1m; and prize for International Understanding $200,000,” said Al Fayyad.

She said that the prize money of each category is $200,000. The winner of the first prize in this category is awarded $100,000; the second $60,000 and the third $40,000.

She added that Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding was founded in Doha, Qatar (2015). It is an international prize run by a board of trustees, a steering committee and independent panels of judges. “The Award seeks to honour translators and acknowledge their role in strengthening the bonds of friendship and cooperation amongst peoples and nations of the world. It hopes to reward merit and excellence, encourage creativity, uphold the highest moral and ethical standards, and spread the values of diversity, pluralism and openness,” said Al Fayyad.

The Media Team of the Steering Committee of the Sheikh Hamad Award organised yesterday a seminar to introduce the Award for a number of translators and those associated with translation field the owners and businesswomen at the headquarters of Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Muscat.

The seminar was attended by Saleh bin Juma Al Balushi, Deputy Director General of the Branches at the Chamber. During the visit, the team met with Dr. Abdullah Al Harasi, Chairman of the General Authority for Radio and Television to discuss the Award.

Al Harasi welcomed the media team, stressing the importance of the award, which supports the intellectual achievement translated from and to Arabic.

The visit concluded with a meeting with Saif Al Rahbi, Editor-in-Chief of Nizwa Magazine who emphasised on the importance of supporting translation as a message to translate civilization, culture and human thought.

The Award was also promoted through TV programmes. Speaking in a talk show of Oman TV, Dr. Hanan Al Fayyad said that the entry for fourth edition of the award increased about 30 percent compared to the previous year. She added that it is expected to announce the results on December 12.

أنهى الفريق الإعلامي للجنة تسيير جائزة الشيخ حمد للترجمة والتفاهم الدولي، زيارته إلى سلطنة عُمان مساء أمس، بهدف التعريف بالجائزة في دورتها الرابعة وأهدافها ورؤيتها، وفي إطار التعاون الثقافي بين عُمان وقطر.

وقد انطلقت أولى الفعاليات بلقاء عدد من مترجمي مركز الندوة للترجمة، وهو مركز أنشئ بجهود ثلة من الشباب العُمانيين المشتغلين بالترجمة، وقد استعرضوا نشاطهم، كما قدمت د. حنان الفياض شرحاً وافياً عن جائزة الشيخ حمد، وكيف يمكن لهذا المركز الحديث أن يتحول إلى مشروع ترجمي حضاري ضخم بجهودهم وعزيمتهم، وتلا هذا اللقاء ندوة ثقافية بعنوان «الترجمة الأدبية واقع وطموح» تحدثت خلالها الدكتورة امتنان صمادي عن «الترجمة بين الماضي والحاضر، ما لنا وما علينا»، حيث نقلت تجربة العرب في نقل حضارات الآخرين، والتي كانت شاهدة على نهضة الأمة العربية، وبيّنت دور الجوائز في خلق حراك ثقافي جاد وهادف، وتناولت التحديات قائلة: «أصعب ما يمكن التعامل معه في موضوع الترجمة، هو ترجمة الهوية الثقافية للشعوب، لما لها من خصوصية ثقافية واختلاف ثقافات ولغات مرتبطة بأساليب الحياة».

كما قدمت الدكتورة حنان الفياض ورقة للتعريف بالجائزة وعرض الرؤية والأهداف التي تسعى إليها والمشرفين عليها وشروطها، بالإضافة إلى الفئات وجوائز المسابقة، وعرّفت الدكتورة الفياض بفئات الجائزة لهذا العام 2018.

هذا، وقد قدم الفريق الإعلامي للجنة تسيير جائزة الشيخ حمد للترجمة والتفاهم الدولي مساء أمس الأول، في مقر غرفة تجارة وصناعة عُمان بمسقط، ندوة تعريفية بالجائزة لعدد من المترجمين والمهتمين بمجال الترجمة، وأصحاب وصاحبات الأعمال، وبحضور صالح بن جمعة البلوشي مساعد المدير العام لشؤون الفروع، والذي تطرق للحديث عن أهمية وجود جائزة الشيخ حمد للترجمة.

كما دار حوار حول صناعة الترجمة، هل هي رسالة أم سلعة؟ ودور الجوائز كجائزة الشيخ حمد في تكريم وتحفيز المترجمين.

كما تبع هذه الزيارة لقاء خاص للحديث عن الجائزة مع الدكتور عبدالله الحراصي رئيس الهيئة العامة للإذاعة والتلفزيون، واختتم برنامج الزيارة بلقاء مع الشاعر سيف الرحبي رئيس تحرير مجلة «نزوى»، بالإضافة إلى لقاء تلفزيوني تمّ على شاشة تلفزيون عُمان ضمن برنامج «من عُمان»، تحدثت فيه د. الفياض عن الجائزة وحيثيات الفرز الأولي للموسم الرابع، والنسبة التي ارتفعت عن الموسم الماضي، بما يزيد عن 30 %، كما يتوقع أن تعلن عن نتائجه في الثاني عشر من ديسمبر المقبل.;
