Renowned Moscow Sretensky Monastery Choir performs in Katara

DOHA: World-renowned Moscow Sretensky Monastery Choir wowed the crowd performing a rich repertoire of liturgical chants and Russian, Ukrainian and Cossack folk songs at a VIP concert at the opulent Katara Opera House on Thursday.

Minister of Culture and Sports, H E Salah bin Ghanem Al Ali attended the concert which was part of the ongoing celebrations of the Qatar Russia 2018 Year of Culture which features cross-cultural collaborations between Qatari and Russian cultural, educational and social institutions.

Around 30 events have been lined up in both countries to mark the cultural year including art exhibitions, fashion events, theatrical shows and concerts among others, according to organisers.

Speaking at the start of the show, Russian Ambassador Nurmakhmad Kholov underlined the importance of cultural exchange between Qatar and Russia in promoting the cultural ties between the two countries and peoples.

Members of the diplomatic community and other dignitaries were among those who were invited to the show. The internationally acclaimed choir staged a captivating special performance complemented with stunning visuals which mesmerised the audience taking them on a journey through centuries of Russian singing tradition.
With the perfect harmony of their voices, the ensemble performed an eclectic mix of 16 amazing compositions beginning with the ancient chant ‘Now The Powers Of Heaven’ and concluding with Ukrainian Cossack song ‘Guys, Unharness Your Horses.’ Among the songs the group performed were Russian folk songs ‘Oh, You Wide Steppe,’ ‘Kalinka (Little Snowberry)’, ‘In the Forge’ and ‘Along the Piterskaya.’

Founded in 1397, the Moscow Sretensky Monastery Choir is one of the most prominent church-singing ensembles of Russia. In the Soviet times, the monastery was closed, and the choir was disbanded.

The convent reopened in 1994. This was when a new group of choir singers was formed – the ones who still represent the Russian sacred and secular music worldwide today.

The concert marked the choir’s first-ever performance in Doha, adding to its high-profile concerts around the world in globally renowned venues such as the Carnegie Hall, Royce Hall, Library of Congress and Notre-Dame de Paris.
At the end of the concert, the Minister and the Ambassador took to the stage to congratulate the choir for their impressive performance.

The event also witnessed a photography exhibition dubbed “The Most Beautiful Country” brought to Qatar by Rosneft Oil company, which was the general partner of the event. The photos displayed were winners of the 12 categories of the annual photo contest organized by The Russian Geographical Society with the aim of preserving wild nature of Russia and fostering respect for the environment.

The choir featured in another concert yesterday night at the Katara Amphitheatre.

قدمت جوقة دير سرتنسكي موسكو عرضاً فنياً خاصاً، أمس، على خشبة مسرح دار الأوبرا في الحي الثقافي (كتارا)، وذلك ضمن فعاليات العام الثقافي قطر- روسيا 2018.

حضر الحفل سعادة السيد صلاح بن غانم العلي وزير الثقافة والرياضة، وسعادة سفير جمهورية روسيا الاتحادية السيد نور محمد خولوف، بالإضافة إلى عدد من المسؤولين والدبلوماسيين.

وقدمت الجوقة عرضاً مميزاً سحر الجمهور، ونقلهم في رحلة عبر الألحان التي قدمتها والمعاني المؤثرة التي تقرب المسافات، وتجمع بين الشعوب.

وفي نهاية الحفل، هنأ كل من سعادة الوزير وسعادة السفير الروسي الجوقة على أدائها الرائع.

أقيم الحفل بدعم من الشريك العام شركة «روسنفت» النفطية الروسية، كجزء من الفعاليات المستمرة التي تحتفي بالسنة الثقافية القطرية- الروسية.

يذكر أن جوقة دير سرتنسكي تأسست في عام 1397 في دير سرتنسكي في موسكو، وقامت بأداء مجموعة متنوعة من أفضل الأغاني الوطنية التقليدية التي تضم الأغاني الشعبية الروسية. وتقدم الفرقة عرضا للمرة الأولى في الدوحة، بعد سجل الحفلات المرموقة التي قدمتها في القاعات الكبرى حول العالم من قاعة كارنيجي إلى المسرح الوطني في كوستاريكا.

كما استضاف الحدث معرضاً للصور الفوتوغرافية، تحت عنوان «أجمل بلد في العالم»، والذي أتت به شركة «روسنفت» النفطية الروسية إلى قطر. وتهدف مسابقة التصوير الفوتوغرافي التي نظمتها الجمعية الجغرافية الروسية إلى الحفاظ على الطبيعة البرية لروسيا، وتعزيز تقدير البيئة. وقد أقيمت المسابقة السنوية منذ عام 2015، وتم عرض الصور الفائزة موزعة على 12 فئة مختلفة.;
