Scientific research at Qatar University grows 442%

DOHA: Qatar University has made great leaps recently in the field of scientific research, after its rate increased 442 percent in the last eight years.

The growth in the research sector in recent years has resulted from the university’s focus on establishing specialized research centers, including the establishment of 17 research center that covered all issues related to the national priorities.

These issues included Traffic safety, healthcare, gas treatment, population surveys and conservation of the marine environment among other issues, QNA reported. Qatar University has confirmed its growing role as a research engine in the region by launching a research road map in 2014 and setting its research priorities for the next five years. The fields the university said it will focus on was energy, environment, resource sustainability, social change, identity and population, healthcare, information and communication technology.

The university has launched seven research centers interested in the above four issues to ensure the implementation of its research strategy. These centers are Biomedical Research Center, Advanced Materials Center, Central Laboratory Unit, Environmental Science Center, Laboratory Animal Research Center, And the Ibn Khaldun Center for Human and Social Sciences.

Vice-President for Research and Graduate Studies, Dr Mariam Al Maadeed, said that the establishment of the centers was to enhance research in the university and to strengthen its tie with the Qatari society. Researchers try to find sustainable solutions to many of the issues facing the Qatari society and the world. She said that the number of research work published in academic journals increased 442 percent at the end of last year. The University published around 1,400 researches in academic journals.

She added that international partnerships were the foundation of Qatar University’s research strategy. The University has signed more than 400 projects in cooperation with local and international institutions and has launched new grant schemes such as collaborative research grants and high impact research grants. The total amount of grants awarded by Qatar University is QR11m.

A quick review of the most important research centers at QU shows the relevance of these research centers to national priorities in the medical, technological, survey, social, environmental and other fields. For example, the biomedical research center plays an important role in improving the health of individuals in Qatar by conducting research, training and providing services in the field of biomedical and applied medical research in two main areas: metabolic diseases and infectious diseases.

The advanced materials center is an advanced research center in materials science. The main research areas of the Center are nanotechnology, sustainable materials, polymers, composite materials, corrosion studies, mining and renewable energy.

The central Lab unit of QU offers all kinds of technical, technical and advisory support to faculty, researchers and students within Qatar University. The unit meets all their scientific and laboratory needs, as well as the needs of public and private sector institutions, the industrial sector and employers in Qatar.

In the field of environmental research, the Environmental Sciences center conducts research and studies that contribute to achieving sustainable environmental development in the State of Qatar and cooperates with partners from the public and higher education sectors from Europe, the United States of America.

The Animal research center for its part is the first and only center in Qatar to provide a sterile environment for rodents used in biomedical research, which is based on state-of-the-art technological systems to provide high quality animal husbandry and veterinary care.

For its part, the social and economic institute conducts academic surveys covering citizens and residents in Qatar and the region through telephone interviews or face to face. It has produced a rich set of survey data that can be used for policy formulation, prioritisation and evidence-based planning in the social, health and economic sectors.

The Institute’s research areas include studies on education, social roles, health, employment, policy and integration Regional, and studies in survey methodologies.

Many of these centers have gained international accreditation certificates as they continue their work on resolving some of the important national issues.

المراكز البحثية بجامعة قطر تُعالج القضايا ذات الأولوية الوطنية

تقوم جامعة قطر بتعزيز البحث العلمي من خلال تأسيس مجمع البحوث الريادي و17 مركزًا بحثيًا متميزًا لمعالجة القضايا ذات الصلة بالأولويات الوطنية، على سبيل المثال لا الحصر، السلامة المرورية، معالجة الغاز، الدراسات المسحية للسكان والحفاظ على البيئة البحرية، وغيرها من القضايا.

وقد وضحت جامعة قطر دورها المتنامي كمحرك بحثي من خلال إطلاق خارطة طريق بحثية في عام 2014 وحددت فيها أولوياتها البحثية للسنوات الخمس القادمة وهي الطاقة والبيئة واستدامة الموارد، التغير الاجتماعي والهوية والسكان، الصحة، وتكنولوجيا المعلومات والاتصالات، وتسهم هذه الخارطة في معالجة قضايا هامة تتعلق بتنمية الدولة على الصعيد الاجتماعي والاقتصادي والثقافي.

وفي هذا الإطار، قامت جامعة قطر بتأسيس سبعة مراكز بحثية تتناول المواضيع الأربعة المذكورة أعلاه، وذلك لضمان تنفيذ الاستراتيجية والأولويات البحثية بجامعة قطر، وهي: مركز البحوث الحيوية الطبية، مركز المواد المتقدمة، وحدة المختبرات المركزية، مركز العلوم البيئية، مركز أبحاث حيوانات المختبر، ومعهد البحوث الاجتماعية والاقتصادية المسحية، مركز ابن خلدون للعلوم الإنسانية والاجتماعية.

وفي هذا السياق، قالت الأستاذة الدكتورة مريم المعاضيد، نائب رئيس جامعة قطر للبحث والدراسات العليا: “تم تأسيس هذه المراكز البحثية بهدف تعزيز البحث العلمي بجامعة قطر ولتمتين التفاعل بين جامعة قطر والمجتمع القطري”.

وأضافت: “يشترك باحثو جامعة قطر في مشاريع بحثية متعددة التخصصات، وذلك لإيجاد الحلول المستدامة للمشاكل التي تواجه المجتمع القطري والمجتمع الخارجي. ومنذ عام 2010، شهدت جامعة قطر تقدما ملحوظا على صعيد عدد المنشورات في المجلات المحكمة علميًا، حيث حققت الجامعة نسبة 422% في نهاية عام 2017. وفي عام 2017، نشرت جامعة قطر أكثر من 1400 مقالًا بحثيًا في مجلات محكمة علميا”.

كما أضافت الأستاذة الدكتورة مريم المعاضيد: “تعتبر الشراكات الدولية أساسًا لاستراتيجية جامعة قطر البحثية. وفي هذا الإطار، وقعت جامعة قطر أكثر من 400 مشروعا بالتعاون مع مؤسسات محلية وعالمية.

كما أطلقت الجامعة مخططات لمنح جديدة مثل المنح البحثية التعاونية والمنح البحثية العالية الأثير، وذلك بهدف تلبية الاحتياجات في مجال التعاون والبحث العلمي العالي التأثير كمعايير لنجاح طلبات المنح البحثية. وتبلغ القيمة الإجمالية للمنح التي حازت عليها جامعة قطر 11 مليون ريال قطري”.;
