New students represent 26 nations at CMU-Q

Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q) welcomed the incoming students at the Class of 2022 convocation ceremony. The first-year class is made up of nearly 100 students studying biological sciences, business administration, computer science and information systems.

Dr Amal Mohamed al-Malki, the founding dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, was the keynote speaker at the event. She was part of the CMU-Q faculty for more than a decade.

Dr al-Malki said, “CMU-Q’s interdisciplinary approach to education will offer you many opportunities to reach your full potential. As you embark on this new journey and take advantage of these opportunities, keep in mind that your degree, important as it is, should not be the sum total of your life’s achievements. Look around you to see how you can tackle challenges within a local and global context, and strive to become an active agent within your community.”

Michael Trick, dean of CMU-Q, welcomed the class to the community and introduced the faculty members who will teach and guide them. “Throughout your academic journey, your professors will challenge you, inspire you, and teach you. Each class you take will be a window into a specialised area of knowledge with your professors as your guides. And remember, one of the most valuable skills you will learn here is how to work as a team and make the most

of everyone’s unique talents.”

This year, CMU-Q received a record number of applications from candidates living outside Qatar, resulting in an exceptionally diverse class. Freshman students represent 26 nations, including the first students from Switzerland and Tanzania. About 40% of the Class of 2022 are Qataris.

CMU-Q is now accepting applications for students starting university in the fall of 2019.

احتفت جامعة «كارنيجي ميلون في قطر» بالطلاب الجدد لدفعة 2022، خلال حفل الترحيب السنوي الذي تنظمه الجامعة مع انطلاقة العام الدراسي الجديد.

وتتألف هذه الدفعة مما يقارب 100 طالب التحقوا بالجامعة لدراسة تخصصات العلوم البيولوجية، وإدارة الأعمال، وعلوم الحاسوب، وأنظمة المعلومات.

وخلال كلمتها الترحيبية، أكدت الدكتورة آمال محمد المالكي -العميد المؤسس لكلية العلوم الإنسانية والاجتماعية في جامعة حمد بن خليفة- على الفرص المميزة التي توفرها جامعة «كارنيجي ميلون في قطر» للطلاب، وقالت: «إن المنهج متعدد التخصصات في جامعة (كارنيجي ميلون) سوف يوفر العديد من فرص المعرفة والوصول إلى إمكانياتكم الكاملة».

وأضافت المالكي، في حديثها للطلاب الجدد: «عند الشروع في هذه الرحلة الجديدة والاستفادة من هذه الفرص، تذكّروا جيداً أنه بجانب الحصول على شهادة التخرج هناك إنجازات أخرى لا تقل أهمية. انظروا حولكم، لتتعلموا كيفية مواجهة التحديات على السياقين المحلي والعالمي، وواصلوا السعي لتصبحوا أحد عوامل التغيير في مجتمعاتكم».

يُذكر أن الدكتورة آمال المالكي عملت في هيئة تدريس جامعة «كارنيجي ميلون» سابقاً، لأكثر من عقد من الزمان.

بدوره، رحّب الدكتور مايكل تريك -عميد جامعة «كارنيجي ميلون في قطر»- بالطلاب الجدد، وقام بتقديم هيئة التدريس التي تشرف على توجيه الطلاب. وأضاف في حديثه للطلاب: «يستمر الأساتذة خلال رحلتكم الأكاديمية في العمل على تحدي قدراتكم وإلهامكم، ويمثّل كل صف دراسي مصدراً متخصصاً من المعرفة. وتذكّروا أن إحدى أهم المهارات التي ستتعلمونها هنا هي كيفية العمل فريقاً واحداً، وتحقيق أقصى استفادة من المواهب الفريدة لكل منكم».

عدد قياسي من طلبات الالتحاق

تلقت جامعة «كارنيجي ميلون في قطر» هذا العام عدداً قياسياً من طلبات الالتحاق من خارج قطر؛ الأمر الذي يشكل إضافة مميزة للحرم الجامعي المتعدد والمتنوع الثقافات، ويمثّل الطلاب 26 دولة، بما في ذلك للمرة الأولى طلاب من سويسرا وتنزانيا، بينما يمثّل الطلاب القطريون نسبة 40 % من دفعة 2022.;
