CNA-Q participates in international diabetes conference

DOHA: College of the North Atlantic-Qatar’s (CNA-Q) Advanced Diploma on Diabetes Education was featured in the exhibition for delegates at an international conference on diabetes hosted by Sidra Medicine in Doha this week.

Over three days, hundreds of experts in diabetes from leading health organisations around the world attended the CUDOS Conference, sponsored by Sidra Medicine. As the only institution to offer an advanced diploma in diabetes education in Qatar, CNA-Q was an educational partner at the conference.

The College hosted an information booth, and School of Health Sciences educators attended lectures and workshops.

Conference delegates included Sheikh Dr. Mohammed Bin Hamad Bin J. Al-Thani, Director of Public Health Department, Ministry of Public Health, Qatar, and Dr. Abdullah Al Hamad, Executive Director, Qatar Diabetes Association, Qatar.

“We are honoured to be part of this prestigious conference,” said CNA-Q Dean of Health Sciences Dr Andrea Smilski, who attended a number of conference sessions herself. “The three days were filled with world renowned scientists who presented their research and findings to advance our understanding of the disease, education, practise, and treatment. The conference was very inspiring.”

According to a recent survey, diabetes prevalence among adults is 17-per-cent in Qatar, with 23-per-cent presenting with pre-diabetes. As with most affluent countries around the world, Qatar has seen an increase in the number of children diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.

Once considered an illness only among adults, there has been a dramatic rise in the incidence of type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents during the past decade. The increasing rate of obesity is a key factor in the rise in type 2 diabetes in children.

شاركت كلية شمال الأطلنطي في قطر بصفتها الشريك التعليمي في مؤتمر أمراض القلب والأوعية الدموية والسكري والسمنة والسكتة الدماغية CUDOS والذي استضافه مستشفى سدرة، حيث أبرزت الكلية تخصص الدبلوم المتقدم في التعليم الصحي لمرض السكري الذي تقدمة. على مدى الأيام الثلاثة للمؤتمر، حضر مئات الخبراء في مرض السكري من منظمات صحية رائدة من جميع أنحاء العالم، وذلك تحت رعاية مستشفى سدرة، وسنحت الفرصة للكلية كونها الشريك التعليمي أن تقدم المعلومات عن برنامج الدبلوم المتقدم في التعليم الصحي لمرض السكري على لسان ممثليها من كلية العلوم الصحية،، كما شارك العديد من الاختصاصيين في مجال العلوم الصحية لدى الكلية في الجلسات وورش العمل في المؤتمر.

وعلقت السيدة أندريا سمايلسكي عميدة كلية العلوم الصحية في كلية شمال الأطلنطي في قطر على هذه المشاركة قائلة: «يشرفنا أن نكون جزءاً من هذا المؤتمر المرموق، خصوصاً وأن كلية شمال الأطلنطي في قطر تقدم برنامج الدبلوم المتقدم الوحيد في التعليم الصحي لمرض السكري في قطر». وأضافت: «كوني قدمت إلى المجتمع الصحي في الدوحة مؤخراً، فقد كان هذا المؤتمر أول فرصة لي هنا للالتقاء بالعديد من القادة في هذا القطاع وتكوين صورة واضحة عن أثر مرض السكري على الأشخاص في قطر»

ووفقاً لدراسة حديثة «مؤتمر حمد 2017 حول الصحة» فإن نسبة انتشار السكري بين البالغين تبلغ 17 % في قطر، مع نسبة 23 % لكل منهم في مرحلة ما قبل السكري. وشهدت قطر زيادة في عدد الأطفال الذين تم تشخيصهم بالسكري من النوع الثاني. حيث حدثت زيادة كبيرة في معدل الإصابة بالسكري من النوع الثاني لدى الأطفال والمراهقين في العقد الماضي، وترتبط هذه الزيادة بمعدل زيادة السمنة التي تعتبر عاملاً رئيسياً في ارتفاع نسب الإصابة بمرض السكري لدى الأطفال.;
