Silatech calls for empowering youth to combat terrorism at UN event

New York: Silatech partook in a high-level panel of leading global policy-makers and practitioners, as well as civil society, private sector, and youth voices, to discuss best practices and initiatives that empower young women and men to fulfil their role as protagonists in preventing and countering violent extremism.

The event, “Youth as Protagonists in Preventing Violent Extremism”, was organised by the Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar to the UN and the Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund, on June 28 2018 during the UN’s Counter-Terrorism Week in New York City.

The panel offered various perspectives on how young people understand and work to prevent violent extremism and radicalisation that lead to terrorism, through activities based on community and social cohesion.

Sabah Al Haidoos, Chief Executive Officer, presented Silatech’s innovative approach to combating extremism and terrorism by empowering young people and enabling them with jobs to lead decent lives, as well as the organisation’s achievements in fragile communities and conflict-affected areas.

“We must work to protect youth from marginalisation, poverty and unemployment so they don’t fall a prey to violent extremism and terrorism… Therefore, we must first ask ourselves how we can expect young people lacking peace, security and decent work to be positive and active participants in their communities.

“We advocate for youth and believe in their positive influence in the development of societies and the spread of peace, and this is what we do at Silatech, an international organisation that works to empower youth and positively engage them in their societies.”

في عالم مضطرب مليء بالتحديات المعيقة والأحداث المؤلمة التي تحول الشباب إلى طاقات مهدرة، وتجعلهم ضحية لآفات الفقر والبطالة، وعُرضة للوقوع في شباك التطرف العنيف والإرهاب، اجتمع الخبراء والمؤثرون على المستوى الدولي في لجنة رفيعة المستوى في نيويورك، لمناقشة دور الشباب المؤثر في منع التطرف العنيف.

تم تنظيم الفعالية من قبل الوفد الدائم لدولة قطر لدى الأمم المتحدة برئاسة المندوب الدائم سعادة السفيرة الشيخة علياء أحمد بن سيف آل ثاني، والصندوق العالمي للانخراط المجتمعي والمرونة، وذلك خلال أسبوع الأمم المتحدة لمكافحة الإرهاب، حيث انضمت الأستاذة صباح الهيدوس -الرئيس التنفيذي لمؤسسة صلتك- إلى حلقة نقاش رفيعة المستوى؛ تضم مجموعة من أبرز المؤثرين على المستوى الدولي من صنّاع السياسات، فضلاً عن ممثلين عن المجتمع المدني، والقطاع الخاص، وأصوات الشباب، من أجل مناقشة أفضل الممارسات والمبادرات التي تعمل على تمكين الشابات والشبان من أداء دورهم كطرف مؤثر في منع ومكافحة التطرف العنيف الذي يؤدي إلى الإرهاب.

وفي هذا الإطار، استعرضت الأستاذة صباح الهيدوس، نهج «صلتك» المبتكر في مكافحة التطرف والإرهاب، من خلال تمكين الشباب وتأمين سبل الحياة الكريمة لهم، وإنجازات المؤسسة في المجتمعات الهشة، والمناطق المتأثرة بالنزاعات.

وقالت: «يجب العمل على حماية الشباب من التهميش والفقر والبطالة، حتى لا يصلوا إلى شباك التطرف العنيف بكل أشكاله والإرهاب بكل أنواعه، لذلك علينا أن نسأل أنفسنا كيف لنا أن نتوقع من الشباب المفتقدين للسلام والأمن والعمل اللائق والمشاركة الفعالة في مجتمعهم، أن يكون شباباً مبادراً وإيجابياً.. إنها حاجة إذا لم نصل إليها ستصل الأفكار الهدامة إليها قبلنا».

وأضافت: «نحن متضامنون وشركاء في الإيمان بدور الشباب، وتأثيرهم في تنمية المجتمعات، ونشر السلام، وهذا ما نعمل عليه في مؤسسة صلتك المؤسسة الدولية، التي تعنى بتمكين الشباب، وتحقيق المشاركة الإيجابية لهم».;
